What was billed to be one of the best regional semifinal matchups of
the tournament proved otherwise. The Cyclones wasted little time in
showing their strength in an 80-56 rout of UCLA, their largest margin
of victory in an NCAA Tournament. Jamaal Tinsley was one rebound
shy of his second career triple-double (14 points, 11 assists, nine
rebounds), but the story of the game was defense. The Cyclones held
the vaunted UCLA offense to a 33.9 shooting percentage from the
floor. While the Bruins sputtered on offense, the Cyclones thrived,
shooting over 50 percent for the 17th time during the season. Michael
Nurse drilled four of his five 3-point attempts to aid the Cyclones to
a 6-for-10 showing from behind the arc. Nurse, Stevie Johnson and
Marcus Fizer all had 16 points to pace ISU.
