Power supply
FS-400C-R1 handles both 230 Vac and 115Vac as mains supply,
and it is delivered with a dual power supply.
The block diagram in Figure 2 shows the power supply
principles of of FS-400C-R1.
The main power passes an MCB before it reaches the AC/DC
power supply input (see Figure 2). The MCB trips and breaks
the circuit if the current exceeds the rated MCB current.
The power supply provides 24 Vdc for the RCU and RIO
modules and for the SPBus (serial process bus).
Diodes in the PSUs, connected in series with the power supply
outputs, are provided for interconnecting the two power supplies
to obtain the following two features:
· Enable independent monitoring of the power supplies
outputs.
· Prevent an error on one power supply output to block the
output from the other.

175811/A 9
Kongsberg Maritime FS-400C-R1

Power supply output monitoring

Built-in relay outputs are used for detecting if the output voltage
has disappeared from the power supplies under operation. As
long as the power is OK the relay contact is closed.
To occupy only one I/O input channel, the two relay contact sets
are serial connected (see Figure 3). The controller computer
(RCU) can thus detect any error caused by any of the two power
supplies, but it doesn’t know which of the two caused the alarm
(OR function of the alarms). To detect which of the two power
supplies has failed, two independent RCU input channels have
to be used, one for each PSU, otherwise you have to inspect the
power supply status LEDs or make direct voltage measurements
on each PSU’s alarm output to identify which one has the loop
power across its contacts. The one having the voltage loss is the
power that has failed.

RCU master/slave interconnection

The two RCUs are interconnected with a set of hand-shake
signals. These signals provide synchronizing and mutually status
information to enable fast/bumpless switching if the master
controller stops for any reason.

Remote I/O modules (RIO modules)

Any combination of RIO modules can be used in FS-400C-R1.
See the actual vessel documentation for which RIO modules that
are used in a specific field station (FS).

10 175811/A
Hardware Description

Powering RIO modules

Normally, there is no need for connecting more than one pair of
24 Vdc/GND terminals from the RIO to the power supply.
However, digital outputs from High Side Drivers can deliver
loop current up to 1 A. If several high current output loops are
in use from an RDIO module, a larger cross section of printed
circuits is needed for power and ground. Therefore more pairs
of power terminals must be used (see Figure 4).

Note A rule of thumb is as follows: Is any high current channel used

on a terminal block of the RIO module, the two power terminals
of the same block should be connected.

See the appropriate Hardware Module Description for more

Grounding RIO modules

Only one of the RIO modules shall be grounded. Normally it is
the first one (RIO location U2). Depending on the grounding
philosophy used for the vessel, either of FL1, FL3 or FL4
fast-on terminal is connected to PE (or to IE if specified).
See also the RIO module Hardware Module Description about
details on the grounding principles.

Serial Process Bus (SPBus)

The illustration below (see Figure 5) shows the principles of the
internal cabling of the Serial Process Bus (SPBus) within
FS-400C-R1 for one RCU.
Note The RIO concept and RIO modules allow dual SPBus operation.
In such a case a double set of SPBus-Hub, SPBus-Term modules
(SPBus-Term) and SPBus cables is used.

Hardware Description

An SPBus cable connects RCU A to Hub 1. The Hub 1 provides

the hub function for the SPBus and can segregate the bus into
four separate bus lines. A bus cable connects the hub to the
SPBus termination board (SPBus-Term).
The internal SPBus cable is daisy-chained from the SPBus-Term
to the different RIO modules. The cable is connected at one end
to connector P1 on the SPBus-Term module and to connector P3
on the same module at the other end. The P3 connection is used
to obtain proper end termination for the SPBus.

Powering the SPBus

The serial process bus is powered from the local 24 Vdc power
supply by using connection terminals on X1 of the SPBus-Term
card. See the HW Configuration section in the SPBus Hardware
Module Description for connection details.

Serial-line interface
The modular serial-interface motherboard TBSS is used with
two plug-in adapters installed. Each TBSS provides circuitry for
a maximum of four serial channels. Used in a configuration with
the RCU, the first handles four channels and the second handles
three channels.
Figure 6 shows the cabling between the RCU(s) and two TBSS
motherboards. A split flat-cable is used between the P19
connector on the RCU and to the P1 connector on the TBSS.
The serial-line cable from the second RCU is connected to the
P2 connector on the TBSS(s).

The Rx-line of the serial lines from the field to the two RCU A
and B, is equally connected to each controller. Only the master
controller is connected to the Tx-line via a switch to the field.
The switching is made from the watchdog & application status
signal from each controller to the TBSS card as shown in Figure
7. See TBSS Hardware Module Description for details.

Field cable termination

The field cables’ outer shields are cut and terminated inside the
through-holes in the bottom plate of the cabinet. The signal
wires are strapped to the back wall cable supports, and from
here the wires are lead to the termination blocks on the RIO
modules.

Spare cores
It may differ between vessels how and where the spare cores are
terminated. Normally, spare cores should be terminated to either
PE or IE bar.

General fault finding and repair

To correct the system, if an error situation has occurred, the
flowcharts in Figure 8 has been provided. A combination of the
following information items listed below may also be required
to locate errors and correct the system:
· Status information or alarm messages shown in the
application window on the operator station. See the
appropriate Operator Manual for more details on this topic.
· Status LEDs and lamps on hardware modules such as power
supplies and RIO modules. See the appropriate Hardware
Module Description for details.
· Values of power-output voltages and fuse state in the system.
See the appropriate Hardware Module Description for more
information.
· System-specific diagrams, lists and drawings. See the
appropriate Drawing File for details.
· Replacement procedures for replaceable modules. See the
Corrective Maintenance section or the appropriate Hardware
Module Description for details.
If you are not able to correct the error situation yourself, you

Reading power status LEDs and measuring supply

voltages
The PSU 1 and PSU 2 are AC/DC converters converting
230 Vac or 115 Vac to 24 Vdc. The status of the PSU 1 and
PSU 2, for the 230 Vac version is shown by a three-colour LED
on the front of the power module. The OK state corresponds to
orange LED colour. For the 115 Vac version a green LED shows
that voltage is present on the output. See the appropriate Power
Supply Hardware Module Description for details.
The power modules are located on the left sidewall inside the
cabinet. Their output voltages can be measured on the power
terminals.
The mains voltage can be measured, where appropriate, using a
multimeter with AC-range. If the supply voltage is 24 Vdc, a
multimeter with DC-range must be used.

18 175811/A
Fault Finding

Equipment status
The RIO modules run built-in test programs that continually
check for faults while the system is running. Field-station
related system messages/alarms are displayed on the operator
station and/or event/alarm printer to inform/alarm the operator
about process station faults or to bring any other relevant
information to the operator’s attention. Refer to the appropriate
Operator Manual for detailed information on reading the
equipment status. Refer to Figure 8 for a general fault finding
flowchart when system messages/alarms are given.
