ADMISSION RULES FOR MASTERS’ DEGREE STUDY

36.2 Admission criteria:
36.2.1 A relevant honours bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
36.2.2 At least 60% obtained as an average final mark in the appropriate major
learning programme.

36.2.3 By special recommendation of the Faculty concerned.
36.3 On the recommendation of the Faculty concerned, Senate may allow a student
to do a masters degree in a programme or Faculty different from that in which
he/she holds an honours degree.
ADMISSION RULES FOR DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY

53.1 In addition to the rules in this Section, those contained under Section A (General Rules) and
Section C (Rules for Postgraduate Study) also apply.
53.2 Admission criteria:
5.3.2.1 A master’s degree or equivalent qualification.
53.2.2 If a candidate does not have a master’s degree, he/she may be admitted to the
doctoral study provided that Senate through the recognition of prior learning (RPL)
is satisfied that such a candidate has reached the standard of a master’s degree.
53.3 Before a candidate is accepted for doctoral study, the Faculty concerned must be convinced
that the candidate has sufficient knowledge of the field of study to be able to fulfil the
requirements for the degree.
The course in Health Promotion and Education for Health aims to develop the ability of health, social
work, agriculture, education and related workers at district, regional, provincial and national levels
and those who will have the responsibility for planning, implementing and evaluating health
promotion Programmes. The course will enable participants to acquire a broad understanding of the
many facets which impact on promoting health and wellbeing, and to develop skills necessary for
improving communication between service providers and communities, identifying needs, priorities,
design appropriate educational materials, advocate and negotiate policies to strengthen community
action, and implement empowering educational processes.
Course Design:
(a) The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion is an action-learning based full-time one
year course with six residential teaching modules for the full-time programme.
(b) Self-study segments supported by custom developed teaching materials form part of both
curriculums.
(c) Each residential teaching block will last for six days (Monday to Saturday).
(d) Students must undertake a project based in their work setting/agencies working in their area
of interest.
Admission Criteria:
(a) Applicants must be in the possession of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Health or related
disciplines.
(b) Priority will be given to those who have or will have:
- The responsibility for planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion activities
at district, regional and provincial level.
- The responsibility for promotion of health and well-being in direct liaison with the community.

(ii) A graduate of any other university who has satisfied the Senate by means of a written

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
NON-SURGICAL DISCIPLINES
Admission Requirements:
In order to be admitted to MMed degree course a candidate must:
(a) Be in possession of MBChB or equivalent degree and be registered with the Health Professions
Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner;
(b) Be appointed to a Registrar's post recognised by the HPCSA. This post must be occupied for
the full duration of registration as required under these rules;
(c) Meet any other requirements that may be enunciated in the rules for the specific degree for
which registration is requested.
Duration:
(a) The duration of the MMed degrees will be a minimum of four years.
(b) The maximum will be six years.
Admission Requirements:

SCHOOL OF LAW
The School of Law has made a significant contribution to the legal fraternity in South Africa over the
previous years. It has, amongst others, produced esteemed judges and advocates like judges BM
Ngoepe (the Judge President of Transvaal Provincial Division), P Mojapelo (Deputy President of
Transvaal Provincial Division), Y Mokgoro (Judge of the Constitutional Court), L Mailula (Judge of
the High Court), to name a few. The School has produced leaders in politics and business in the
public and private sectors.
All the programmes offered in this School are intended to enrich a candidate’s background on
various laws.
This is a taught masters’ degree with a mini-dissertation contributing at least 50% towards the final
mark.
