Step 2: Go to Academic Application

Step 3: View Application Rules and Click Accept

Step 4: Go to School Attended

Step 5: Select School Name and Save

Step 6: Enter School Leaving Subjects

Step 7: Go to Disabilities and Click None/ Select and Click Save

Step 8: Go to submit application

Step 9: Enter your Academic Preference Qualification/s (maximum of 2)

Step 10: Save and Continue to Residence Application if required.

ADMISSION RULES FOR POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATES, POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS AND


HONOURS DEGREE STUDIES
G30

30.1 In addition to the rules in this Section, those contained under Section A (General
Rules) and Section C (Rules for Postgraduate Study) also apply.
30.2 Admission criteria:
30.2.1 A relevant undergraduate qualification or equivalent.
30.2.2 At least 60% obtained as an average final mark in the appropriate
major.
Or
30.2.3 By special recommendation of the Faculty concerned.
ADMISSION RULES FOR MASTERS’ DEGREE STUDY

36.1 In addition to the rules in this Section, those contained under Section A (General
Rules) and Section C (Rules for Postgraduate Study) also apply.
36.2 Admission criteria:
36.2.1 A relevant honours bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
36.2.2 At least 60% obtained as an average final mark in the appropriate major
learning programme.
Or
36.2.3 By special recommendation of the Faculty concerned.
36.3 On the recommendation of the Faculty concerned, Senate may allow a student
to do a masters degree in a programme or Faculty different from that in which
he/she holds an honours degree.
ADMISSION RULES FOR DOCTORAL DEGREE STUDY

53.1 In addition to the rules in this Section, those contained under Section A (General Rules) and
Section C (Rules for Postgraduate Study) also apply.
53.2 Admission criteria:
5.3.2.1 A master’s degree or equivalent qualification.

53.2.2 If a candidate does not have a master’s degree, he/she may be admitted to the
doctoral study provided that Senate through the recognition of prior learning (RPL)
is satisfied that such a candidate has reached the standard of a master’s degree.

53.3 Before a candidate is accepted for doctoral study, the Faculty concerned must be convinced
that the candidate has sufficient knowledge of the field of study to be able to fulfil the
requirements for the degree.

SCHOOL OF HEALTH CARE SCIENCES

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion

The course in Health Promotion and Education for Health aims to develop the ability of health, social
work, agriculture, education and related workers at district, regional, provincial and national levels
and those who will have the responsibility for planning, implementing and evaluating health
promotion Programmes. The course will enable participants to acquire a broad understanding of the
many facets which impact on promoting health and wellbeing, and to develop skills necessary for
improving communication between service providers and communities, identifying needs, priorities,
design appropriate educational materials, advocate and negotiate policies to strengthen community
action, and implement empowering educational processes.

Course Design:
(a) The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion is an action-learning based full-time one
year course with six residential teaching modules for the full-time programme.
(b) Self-study segments supported by custom developed teaching materials form part of both
curriculums.
(c) Each residential teaching block will last for six days (Monday to Saturday).
(d) Students must undertake a project based in their work setting/agencies working in their area
of interest.

Admission Criteria:
(a) Applicants must be in the possession of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Health or related
disciplines.
(b) Priority will be given to those who have or will have:
- The responsibility for planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion activities
at district, regional and provincial level.
- The responsibility for promotion of health and well-being in direct liaison with the community.
Duration
(a) One year minimum
(b) Two years maximum

Master of Nursing

The Master’s degree programme is offered as a research masters’ programme culminating in a


dissertation relevant to the discipline.
Admission Requirements:
(a) Applicants must be in possession of a 4 year basic degree in Nursing (BNurs) or post
basic BNurs degree with an Honours degree in nursing (or equivalent);
(b) Registration with South African Nursing Council as registered Nurse Practitioner.
(c) An average of 60% in the major subjects.

Duration:
(a) One year minimum
(b) Three years maximum

Presentation of the Programme:


(a) Students will be required to complete the one week research programme before taking on
the research projects.
(b) All research proposals will be registered with the University of Limpopo after approval by
the relevant University Committee.

Master of Science in Dietetics

The Master’s degree programme is offered as a research masters’ programme culminating in a


dissertation relevant to the discipline.
The student is required to produce a dissertation on a subject approved by the Head of the
Department. An oral examination may be required.
Admission Requirements:
(a) A relevant 4-year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
(b) An average of 60% in the major subjects

Curriculum:
(a) A dissertation must be submitted based on a topic approved by the Programme Manager and
Senate.

Duration:
(a) One year minimum
(b) Three years maximum

Master of Optometry

The Master’s degree programme is offered as a research masters’ programme culminating in a


dissertation relevant to the discipline.

Admission Requirements:
(a) Candidates for the MOptom degree must possess a 4-year BOptom degree or its
equivalent from a recognised institution.
(b) The candidates may be required to have received at least a 60% pass in the BOptom
degree in the subject for the master’s dissertation.

Duration:
(a) One year minimum
(b) Three years maximum

Dissertation:
(a) A research dissertation shall be submitted for assessment.

Master of Pharmacy

The Master’s degree programme is offered as a research masters’ programme culminating in a


dissertation relevant to the discipline of choice.

Discipline:
(a) Pharamacology
(b) Pharmaceutics

Admission Requirements:
(a) A 4-year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Pharmacy.
(b) An average of 60% in the major subjects

Duration:
(a) One year minimum
(b) Three years maximum

Dissertation:
(a) The assessment consists of a dissertation in addition to which an oral or written
assessment may be required, on a subject approved by the Programme Manager of the

relevant discipline.
(b) Where a student is in possession of a BPharm degree, he may proceed directly to an
MPharm degree the dissertation being submitted at least one year after obtaining the BPharm
degree.

Master of Public Health

Disciplines:
(a) Health Measurement
(b) Health Policy and Management
(c) Environmental and Occupational Health
(d) Social and behaviour Sciences in Public Health

Admission Requirements:
(a) A relevant Bachelor Honours degree or equivalent.
(b) At least 60% in the relevant major subjects.
(b) If Senate is satisfied that the candidate sufficiently qualify to pursue the programme
envisaged for the degree of Master of Public Health, any of the following may be admitted
as a candidate:
(i) The holder of a degree of Bachelor of Arts or Sciences with Honours in Nursing,
Psychology or Sociology or in a field which in the opinion of the Senate is relevant to
public health.
(ii) A graduate of any other university who has satisfied the Senate by means of a written
or oral test (or both) or by means of any other mode of assessment to be determined
from time to time by the Senate that he/she is qualified to undertake the line of study
proposed or research (or both) required for the degree.

Duration:
(a) One year minimum
(b) Three years maximum
Mini-Dissertation:
(a) A candidate shall submit a topic for the approval of the Senate before June of the first
academic year of study.
(b) A candidate may be permitted by the Senate to substitute a new topic for the research
report before November of the first year

Master of Science in Medical Sciences
The Master’s degree programme is offered as a research masters’ programme culminating in a
dissertation relevant to the discipline of choice.

Admission requirements:
(a) A 4-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Medical Sciences or a 4-year Health
Sciences related degree

The Doctoral degree programme is based on an original research project culminating in a thesis

(a) Be in possession of MBChB or equivalent degree and be registered with the Health Professions
Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner;
(b) Be appointed to a Registrar's post recognised by the HPCSA. This post must be occupied for
the full duration of registration as required under these rules;
(c) Meet any other requirements that may be enunciated in the rules for the specific degree for
which registration is requested.
Duration:
(a) The duration of the MMed degrees will be a minimum of four years.
(b) The maximum will be six years.

Master of Medicine in General Surgery

Master of Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology

Master of Medicine in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Admission Requirements:
In order to be admitted to MMed degree course a candidate must:
(a) Be in possession of MBChB or equivalent degree and be registered with the Health Professions
Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner;
(b) Be appointed to a Registrar's post recognised by the HPCSA. This post must be occupied for the
full duration of registration as required under these rules;
(c) Meet any other requirements that may be enunciated in the rules for the specific degree for which
registration is requested.

Duration:
(a) The duration of the MMed degrees will be a minimum of five years
(b) The maximum will be seven years.

The School of Education is primarily committed to rural regeneration, empowerment and


development, through a lifelong learning approach to teaching and interdisciplinary research.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Further Education and Training Teaching (PGCE (FET
Teaching))

Bachelor of Education Honours in Curriculum Studies (BEdHons (Curriculum Studies))

Admission Requirements:
(a) The minimum admission requirements for the BEdHons degree, is a four-year professional
teaching degree (in Senior phase and / or FET phase teaching) within the particular subject
OR
(b) an appropriate Bachelor’s degree (within appropriate subject area) and a recognised
