Classifications of SPDs based on IEC 61643-1 Page 1 of 4

A Phoenix Contact India White Paper

Surge Protection Devices (SPDs )can be classified in accordance to different parameters.

IEC 61643-1 talks about these parameters.
We will discuss those parameters here ony by one.

1. Number of Ports :
a) One Port
b) Two Port
One Port SPD is connected in Parallel with the Circuit to be protected. It may have
separate Input & output terminals but without specific series Impedance between these
terminals.

Two Port SPD will have separate Input & Output terminals with specific series
impedance between these terminals. The two-port SPD is connected in series with the
load so it must have the capacity to transmit the rated current from the source to the load.

2. Design Topology :
a) Voltage Switching
b) Voltage Limiting
c) Combination

Voltage Switching type SPD is also known as CROWBAR type.

These type SPDs has High Impedance when there is no surge present & show a sudden
change to Low Impedance in response to Voltage Surge just like a switching operation.
Spark Gap . GDT ( Gas Discharge Tube ) , Thyristor ( SCR ) & Triacs are few examples
of components having such characteristics. A voltage-limiting device has a continuous V
versus I characteristic

Volatge Limiting type , also known as CLAMPING type.

These type SPDs has High Impedance when there is no surge present but Impendance
reduce continueously ( Non – linearly ) with increased surge current & voltage. Common
Examples of these Non-Linear devices are Metal Oxide Variastor ( MOV ) & Suppressor
diodes. A voltage-switching device has a discontinuous V versus I characteristic

Combination Type SPD has Voltage Limiting as well as Voltage Switching component
altogether.

3. Class :
a) CLASS I
b) CLASS II
c) CLASS III

These class I , II & III are also classifies as Type 1 , 2 & 3 as per EN Standard as well as
Class B, C & D respectively by DIN standard.

Required information for these SPDs are following:

Iimp ( Impulse Current ) for Class I

Imax (Normal Discharge Current ) for Class II
Uoc (Open Circuit Voltage ) for Class III

4. Location:
a) Indoor
b) Outdoor

SPDs are classifies as per the Location of Installation of SPDs.

Outdoor SPDs need to fulfill all the requirements with regard to protection of the
surrounding environment.

5. Accessibility:
a) Accessible
b) Inaccessible ( Out of Reach )

Out of Reach means no access to live parts with out the use of tolls or other equipments.

6. Mounting Method :
a) Fixed
b) Portable

7. SPD Disconnector :
It is a device for disconnecting a SPD from the system in the event
of SPD failure. It is to prevent a persistent fault on the system and to give visible
indication of the SPD failure.

Disconnector is not necessary

A) Protection Functions of Disconnector :

a) Thermal Protection against thermal problems (such as thermal runaway on
varistors),
b) OverCurrent protection against internal short circuits,
c) Leakage Current protection against indirect contact.

These functions may be achieved by one or several devices.

B) Location of Disconnector :
a) Internal – Disconnector incorporated in the housing of the SPD itself
b) External – Disconnector as a separate component installed in the electrical
network up-stream of the SPD
c) Both – (One Part Internal & one part External )

8. Over Current Protection :

a) Specified
b) Not Specified

9. Degree of Protection provided by enclosure :

Protection provided by an enclosure against access to hazardous part,
against ingress of solid foreign object and/or against ingress of Water as per IP codes of
IEC 60529.

10. Temperature Range :

a) Normal ( -5°C to +40°C )
b) Extended ( -40°C to +70°C )

11. System
a) AC between 48 Hz & 62 Hz
b) DC
c) Both ( AC & DC )

12 Multipole SPD :
SPD with more than one mode of protection. Or SPDs electrically
interconnected offered as a unit.
