DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PH.D. IN MEDICAL SCIENCES
The Kesmonds International University Ph.D. in Medical
Sciences hones the research expertise of senior-level healthcare
administrators, clinical health professionals, and public health

the current state of health care; apply sophisticated knowledge
of research design, biostatistics, and epidemiology to the
literature of your core discipline; and design and conduct
original health care research.

The aim of the Kesmonds International University Ph.D. in

Medical Sciences is to train Ph.D. scientists in a specific area of
research specialization who also have enough general
knowledge in the basic medical sciences to apply their research
expertise to unravel the basis of disease. This approach includes
understanding not only pathogenic manifestations of disease
but also the normal physiologic state. The research possibilities
are endless here at Kesmonds International University, and you
can take advantage of learning opportunities from the most
basic molecular structure techniques to clinical trial design and
execution. The immense clinical opportunities available to
students allow for opportunities that not many graduate
programs can offer.

The Kesmonds International University Ph.D. in Medical

Sciences program provides students with resources, formal
course work, and the experimental research frame that leads to
earning the Ph.D. degree. Our holistic curriculum teaches
critical thinking and promotes interdisciplinary training with
core values in Rigor, Reproducibility, and Responsible Conduct
of Research. The research core competencies are

development, and leadership skills. Students are expected to
demonstrate the highest research and professional skills to
transcend their knowledge to other disciplines and solve
problems systematically and collaboratively with other
scientists. The Medical Sciences Ph.D. combines intensive
biomedical sciences training and research opportunities in a
variety of fields. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. program will
participate in a common first-semester curriculum that will
provide an essential background for biomedical science
research.

Research Areas
Along with supervisory guidance, students identify a research
question or topic within the scope of medical science and work
independently on a research project. Students are required to
complete one taught module, Clinical Research Methodology,
which is designed to prepare students for their competency in
project planning and management, and also to ensure they
become ethically literate and socially responsible. To graduate,
students must produce a thesis based on their original research
and subsequently pass the thesis examination and viva voce.

Infectious Diseases Cancer Biology, Cardiovascular Research,
Neuroscience and neurodegenerative Diseases, Diabetes/
Metabolic Disorders, Molecular Medicine

Objectives

provision and receipt of healthcare services and research;

appropriate principles and procedures to the recognition,
evaluation, interpretation, and understanding of current issues;
- Apply the principles of scientific inquiry to investigate problems at
the frontiers of knowledge; and
- Demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity of culturally diverse
populations and their attitudes toward health and illness.

Who is the Degree Designed For?

Each institution has its requirements for entry. Many Ph.D. in
Medical Science programs limit their admissions to physician
assistants. However, if you have another type of medical
background, be sure to choose programs that align with your
professional experience. The Kesmonds International University's
Ph.D. in Medical Science program is available to anyone with a
healthcare background, such as nurses, medical technologists, or
physical therapists.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The underpinning philosophy of all assessments is to develop
both your knowledge and skills to enter employment as a
confident manager with a strong base from which to meet your
own aspirations. This requires consideration of your own
personal capabilities as well as looking outward at the business
world. The aim is for you to become an independent and self-
directed lifelong learner. Apart from the formal assessments,
there will be an emphasis on self, with personal assignments
and a 25 to 35 pages summary of your understanding of each
course, these assignments cover 50% of the course evaluation.
Tutors will provide feedback on formative assessments to
support your development of good academic practice. All
assessments are rooted in authentic and practical workplace
scenarios to enable the integration of theory and practice in
dynamic `real-world work contexts. Exams are kept to a
minimum of 50%. To facilitate learning for all students a range of
assessment methods are used throughout the course,
including: - Business Reports to demonstrate contextual insight
and professional practice; - Project Plans to demonstrate project
planning skills; - Seminar Papers to develop critical analysis
skills; - In-class tests of your knowledge of core concepts in
context; - Project Report integrates learning throughout the
course independently applied in practice; Business simulation
where you demonstrate the impact of your strategic decision
making. The focus is on the impact of management education
on management practice and later assessments require greater
complexity and integration through independent study to
support your successful transition into work. This is exemplified
by two units at the dissertation stage: Management Practice
and the Theory into Practice Project.

Doctorate Admission Requirements.
1. Attestation of service showing proof of at least 12 months
experience in the required or related field aspiring.
2. Signed personal statement letter written by the applicant
stating your reasons for choosing the program of study with KIU
America and your willingness to respect KIU policies.
3. Scanned copy of undergraduate transcripts, degree, or
attestation or its equivalence from an internationally accredited
institution that is accredited by a recognized accrediting
agency.
4. Scanned copies of master’s transcripts, degree or attestation
or its equivalence, attesting you have completed at least 120
credits at master’s level.
5. Scanned copy of international passport or ID card.
6. Copy of CV (uploaded in pdf or doc format).
7. Applicants are required to acquire three letters of
recommendation. In the online application, you will be asked to
identify your recommenders and their email addresses. Please
notify your recommenders that they will receive an email
prompt to submit their recommendation online. KIU only
accepts online recommendations through the application
system; KIU conditionally accepts mailed, emailed or faxed
recommendations academics@kesmonds-edu.ac.
Recommendations should be written by people who have
supervised you in an academic, employment, or community
service setting. At least one should be from a university
professor familiar with your academic work.
Your recommendations should directly address your suitability
for admission to a graduate program at KIU.

NB: If eligible for the Doctorate program your tuition fee is

stated at $16,500 excluding university functional fees which vary
with needs. Program duration is three (03) years full-time and 4
years part-time.

Eligibility
Applicants will be required to participate in an interview process
and must: Hold a completed Master’s degree in any business
discipline or heath science discipline which shall be evaluated
by the admissions committee deemed equivalent and must
have completed a minimum of 120 Master’s degree credit levels
in medical sciences. There are non-standard English language
requirements for this course.
