PHYS 101 / Dynamics of Motion- Datasheet

Experiment 4
Simulation link: https: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/cheerpj/the-ramp/latest/the-ramp.html?simulation=the-ramp

Experiment

In the first part of the experiment, you will determine the kinetic friction coefficient between an abject and a plane when
the object is in horizontal motion. In the second part, the plane will be inclined by an angle, and the kinetic friction
coefficient will be calculated by varying the angle of inclination. In the last part, the system will be kept in equilibrium in
an inclined plane and static friction coefficient will be calculated and compared by varying the angle of the incline.

Procedure for Horizontal Motion Experiment

1. Open the simulation by clicking on the simulation link given above.

Fig. 4.1 Horizontal motion simulation screen

2. On the main screen, click on the “ More Features” and close all the graphs, work, and energy tabs by clicking on the
minimize sign on them.
3. For the first part of the experiment, set the angle of inclination of the track as 0° by clicking the left mouse button on
the right end of the track and dragging it down.

4. Select an object by clicking on “Choose an Object” drop down menu and record the mass of the object in Table 4.1.
Use the same object for this part of the experiment.

5. Make sure to uncheck the “ FRICTIONLESS” box and set the coefficeint of friction as some appropriate value.

6. Apply a constant force continously on the object. Make sure to select the force value so that you can give the object
an acceleration. Record the value of force in Table 4.1.

7. When the object moves some distance, pause the motion, note down the time, velocity as your first reading. Hit “ go”
after few seconds click on the “ Pause” button again and record the time and velocity as your second reading. Record
the values in Table 4.1. Left side denotes negative velocity.
8. Apply a different constant force on the object and repeat the procedure four more times and record your time, and
velocity readings in Table 4.1.
9. The timer in the simulation has a limit of 30 seconds, therefore, click on “ clear” each time when you exceed the 30
second time limit.

1. Choose “ file cabinet” as an object from the drop down menu.

2. Uncheck the “ Frictionless” box so that the “ Coefficient of Friction between the file cabinet and ramp is 0.3.
3. Apply a continuous force on the file cabinet by clicking the left mouse button on the object and dragging it and push
the object to the right end of the inclined track.
4. Click on the right end of the track and raise this end slowly to an angle that the object will start sliding and note down
the angle in Table 4.2.
5. When object starts sliding down the track hit the “Pause” and record the first velocity and time readings in Table 4.2.
Hit “ go” button and the object will start sliding again. Hit the “ Pause” and record the second time and velocity
readings in Table 4.2.
6. Four more times raise the angle and repeat the procedure from 3-6 for four different angles. Record your time and
velocity readings in Table 4.2. Remember to consider significant figures.

Procedure for coefficient of friction, μ in static equilibrium on an inclined plane.

This time you will measure the force to keep the object in equilibrium in an inclined plane.

1. Choose an object from the drop down menu.

2. Select an appropriate value for the coefficient of friction.
3. Move the object to the right end of the plane by applying force on it and remove the force once the object is on
the right end of the plane.
4. Raise the right end of the plane gradually till you observe the motion of the object. Just before the motion record
the Angle in Table 4.3.
5. Repeat the procedure four more times for different objects.
