be a pleasure if you are already inspired, and
of course be ‘in the mood’! If you get your
workspace set up properly this usually helps to
get started – by clearing away the beads and
findings from your beading mat and starting
with an uncluttered desk for the new season,
you have no excuse to start your next project.
I usually set myself a project or two for the
summer months – this year it is going to be a
set of fascinators (I might even manage to get
one finished for myself to wear on Melbourne
cup day who knows?) – and a piece of
‘steam punk’ jewellery.
If you are interested in fascinators have
a look at www.fascinators.net for some
wonderful versions.
Steam punk jewellery represents a style
that is a cross between science fiction and
an industrial Victorian era look. So many
steam powered and mechanical inventions
appeared in the late 19th century that there
is a plethora of ideas and inspirations just
waiting to be explored and converted into a
jewellery piece. this design also showcases
the recycling and ‘waste not, want not’
theory, so once the piece is complete the
wearer can feel smug that they have done
something for the environment, by using
re-cycled materials.
Components to use to fashion an unusual
necklace in this style include clockwork gears,
watch dials, clock or watch hands, gears, cogs,
chain, screws, nuts, bolts, washers, wire and
findings. the key (and yes you could use that
as well!) is to choose antiqued brass coloured
items where possible, then combine with
gemstones, glass and crystal beads in colours

drawer pulls, escutcheon plates, locks or in fact

George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy
and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward.
This song gives us a picture in our minds
eye of lazy, hazy hot summer days and for us
beaders the opportunity to design and make
some ‘hot’ creations to meet the summer
trends in jewellery fashions.
This summer season – I would like to call
‘open season’ as there are so many trends
and ideas around for jewellery makers.
Again, size does matter this season –
whatever the jewellery item – it should be big,
bright and bold. This will work well when
complemented with a conservative outfit. For
example: if you have designed and made a
huge chain linked bracelet, pair it with a basic
outfit. This season is all about using chain
bracelets, bracelet rings and necklaces that
are feminine but have an ‘edge’ and create a
‘grand’ statement.
Importantly – don’t mix ‘big’ pieces of
jewellery. A single large piece will say more
than a jumble of mixed pieces. So for your
new season’s jewellery and outfit for summer
to work, don’t wear a pair of large earrings
with a large necklace it will be too overstated.
When you look at the fashion stores, this
trend is highlighted by the beautiful, colourful
and of course, big jewellery that dominates
the season. Hoops and circular earrings will
be in the fore and have a ‘gaudy’ look when
embellished with lots of ‘bling’ type gems. If
