RESOLVED, THAT E-BOOKS ARE BETTER THAN PHYSICAL BOOKS
(Preliminary Research)

INTRODUCTION

As students, we are constantly searching for ways to optimize our learning and make
the most of our time. With the rise of technology and the growing popularity of e-books,
the question of whether e-books are better than physical books has become a topic of
intense debate. This debate topic is relevant to us as it raises important questions about
the role of technology in our educational system and the potential benefits and
drawbacks of different formats of books. Hence, it is important for us students to think
critically about the pros and cons of each format of books and to make informed
decisions about which one is best suited to our needs.

BODY 1:

One of the biggest advantages of e-books is that they can be accessed instantly,
anywhere, anytime. Additionally, e-books are typically less expensive than physical
books and are often available for free or at a lower cost than their physical
counterparts(Sari et al., 2022a). According to Amirtharaj et al., (2023) digitalization of
books enhances the accessibility, convenience, ability to search with options of free
downloads, being easy to carry, store, and to share among their peers (Amirtharaj et al.,
2023).E-books provide readers with a wider range of options than they would get in a
bookstore. However, E-books, despite their benefits, have drawbacks like copyright
issues, health problems, damage vulnerability, and marketing issues, susceptible to
viruses, and less accessible without devices (Sari et al., 2022b). Digital textbooks also
contain more distractions since notifications can pop up on the screen while you’re
reading, leading to distractions that can last for hours at a time(Lawver, 2023)

Paragraph 2:

The physical books on the other hand, needed time or space to read and did not
require a special computer or internet connection. The second benefit was that it was
simple to borrow from the library, safe for eye health, and had little interference or
distraction (Rizky, 2023). Additionally, it was more fascinating because it was simple to
take notes straight on and could ensure to suit learning. However, Print materials are
static and are not appropriate for teaching languages and visual concepts. If the
learners are non-readers or language skills are required, print materials will not be
effective. Lastly print materials do not generally provide built-in interactions (Cahyani,
2023). Besides, e-books are selected because they are environmentally friendly
compared to printed copies (Haris, 2011). Also, it minimizes the excessive use of paper
and overcomes the potential for global warming. (Haris, 2011 as cited in Rachim &
Ambarwati, 2021)
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we think there is no right or wrong answer to this question because
both have advantages and disadvantages of their own, but based on the evidence
provided, we feel that e-books are much more convenient than printed or physical
books because we don't have to carry multiple books around and can access them
whenever we want. While extended reading and studying sessions may not always be
comfortable, the benefits of ebooks, such as their environmental friendliness, greatly
outweigh this drawback.
