(Minds and Moods) b. Greetings
c. Attendance
d. Recall of Classroom Rules

1. Short Review
Polygon are around us. We can see them in floor, ceiling and wall designs.
The teacher will play a motivational video with some polygons are highlighted. The
students will ask to name and draw at least two (2) shapes based on the video
presented. Correct answers earn 1 point
2. Feedback (optional)
B. ESTABLISHING 1. Lesson Purpose
LESSON Use the exact figures used in the short review. Let the students define
PURPOSE polygon, non-polygon, regular polygon and irregular polygon given illustrations.
(Aims) Engage students in activity that will help them identify if the given figure is polygon or
non-polygon. Let the students differentiate regular and irregular polygons based on
the given activity.
The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand the definition
polygon, non-polygon, regular polygon and irregular polygon and explore their
properties, learn how to identify polygon and non-polygon, differentiate regular and
irregular, additionally, students will practice drawing of regular and irregular polygons
with 5, 6, 8, or 10 sides, based on measurements of sides and angles, using a ruler and
protractor.
2. Unlocking Content Vocabulary

 Polygon: A closed figure with straight sides.

 Non-Polygon: Figures that are open or have curved sides.
 Regular Polygon: All sides and angles are equal (e.g., equilateral triangle,
square).
 Irregular Polygon: Sides and angles are not all equal (e.g., scalene triangle,
rectangle).

C. DEVELOPING SUB-TOPIC 1: Define polygons, non-polygons and describe its properties

AND DEEPENING 1. Explicitation
UNDERSTANDING Let the students take a closer look at the polygon highlighted on the design shown in
(Tasks and Taught) the video presented. Ask students to recall and share what they know about the
polygons presented. Use the students answers in processing the discussion of the
meaning of a polygon.
2. Worked Example
Ask the students enumerate the common characteristics of polygon
Possible answers:
a. Closed figure
b. Two-dimensional
c. Formed by line segments that are connected endpoint to endpoint, no two
sides belong to the same line.
The given characteristics, will help the learners to understand the definition of
polygon, ask learner:
a. What is a polygon?
Possible answer:
A polygon is a closed, two-dimensional figure formed by line segments that
are connected endpoint to endpoint and no two sides belongs to the same line.

Let the students come up with the definition of non-polygons based on the given
figures.
Possible answer:
This is not two-dimensional, these 2 sides belong to the same line, the
sides are not line segments and have curved sides
a. What is a non-polygon?
A non-polygon are figures that are open or have curved sides.
For formative evaluation, ask the learners to give or to draw a polygon and non-
polygon that is not the same with the examples found in your discussion.

3. Lesson Activity
Tell whether the given figure is a polygon or not. if it is not a polygon, give the reason.

3. Which shape below is a regular polygon?

o a) Square
o b) Rectangle
o c) Rhombus
o d) Trapezoid

Short-Answer Questions:

4. Explain why a rectangle is considered an irregular polygon despite

having equal opposite sides.
5. A regular hexagon has all sides of length 6 cm. What are the interior
angles of this hexagon?
6. Draw a regular octagon and label the sides and angles.

Application and Analysis Questions:

7. A park has a shape of an irregular pentagon. What features would

you measure to determine if it is indeed an irregular pentagon?
8. If a tile in a bathroom is shaped like a regular decagon, how would
you verify that it is a regular polygon using a ruler and protractor?
9. In the figure below, classify each shape as a polygon or not a
polygon. For the polygons, further classify them as regular or
irregular. (Provide a diagram with a mix of shapes)

Answer Key

Multiple-Choice Questions:

1. b) Triangle
2. c) All sides and angles are equal.
3. a) Square

Short-Answer Questions:

4. Answer: A rectangle is considered an irregular polygon because, although

opposite sides are equal and parallel, the angles are 90 degrees, but not all
four sides are equal, making it not regular.
5. Answer: In a regular hexagon, each interior angle is 120 degrees.
6. Answer: (Students should draw an octagon with equal sides and angles
labeled, typically 135 degrees each.)

Application and Analysis Questions:

7. Answer: To determine if the park is an irregular pentagon, measure all the

side lengths and interior angles. If the side lengths and angles are not all
equal, it is an irregular pentagon.
8. Answer: Use a ruler to measure all the sides to ensure they are equal and a
protractor to measure all the interior angles to ensure they are all the same.
9. Answer: (Students will classify each shape based on the provided diagram. A
correct answer will include identification and classification of shapes as
polygons or non-polygons and further as regular or irregular polygons where
applicable.)

This PISA-style quiz encourages students to think critically about the properties
of polygons and apply their knowledge in practical contexts.
