Online Therapy could also be as Effective- According to research, online therapy can
treat a variety of mental health issues just as successfully as in-person therapy. Lou et al.,
(2021), found that a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) delivered online is just as
effective for treating moderate depression as CBT delivered in person. Another study
discovered that online CBT for panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized
anxiety disorder was just as effective as face-to-face CBT (Andrews et al., 2018).
Suitable for Remote Areas- For those who live in rural or remote areas, online therapy
provides access to mental health care. Because there are either few or no mental health
practices in rural areas, those who live there might not have access to any other type of
mental health treatment. Moreover, if you live in a remote area and you’re a busy person
online consultation could help.
Accessibility for Individuals with Physical Disabilities- Online counseling may be a
good replacement for standard in-person psychotherapy for people who are unable to
leave their homes for a variety of reasons, such as physical or mental illness.
Affordable and convenient - The cost and convenience of online therapy are typically
acceptable. You can frequently schedule your therapy sessions for times that are most
convenient for you because you will be attending sessions online from the comfort of
your own home. Additionally, because you won't need to take a vehicle to get to your
counselor, your expenses will be reduced.
It is more approachable- The internet makes mental health treatment more accessible.
People may feel comfortable discussing physical health care issues with friends and
family, but they may not feel the same way about discussing equally important mental
health concerns. Online access makes it easier to overcome the stigma associated with
mental health issues in the past. As stated by Andersson et al., (2014), even if you believe
your mental health is in good shape, online therapy can help you become mentally and
emotionally stronger.
Disadvantages
Confidentiality and Privacy Issues- The risk of privacy violations and hacks increases
when data is transmitted over the internet, so client data may not be kept secure and
private.
Lack of Response to Crisis Situations- Online therapists may find it challenging to
react quickly and effectively when a crisis occurs because they are separated from the
client. It may be challenging or even impossible for the therapist to offer direct
assistance to a client who is considering suicide or has experienced a personal tragedy.
Not Recommended for Serious Psychiatric Conditions- E-therapy can be helpful in a
variety of circumstances, but it is ineffective for those who need in-person assistance or
close, direct care. Because of its potential limitations, online therapy may not be
effective in more complicated cases.
Ethical and Legal concerns- Every country has its own laws concerning mental health
therapy to its citizens, and since online therapy is something that anyone can view and
might request advice on, there may be ethical and legal challenges.
