LANDSCAPE

ARCHITECTS
The art of landscape architecture is frequently disregarded. However, when done correctly, it can
produce stunning and lovely spaces. The design of outdoor areas that enhance and develop the
environment is known as landscape architecture. It entails the management, guardianship, and
management of land and plants. To design stunning and useful outdoor places, landscape
architects frequently collaborate with other experts like architects, planners, engineers,
developers, builders, and environmentalists. It is the job of landscape architects to design settings
that are both attractive and useful. They must take into account a number of things, including
geography, climate, and the requirements of the users of the place. They should also strive for
sustainable design and be conscious of environmental problems like erosion. Thus, it is important
to know, as aspiring architects, that there are landscape architects that are essential to every
project as other professions are. After all, designing architecture isn't all about building structure,
it should always involve the environment around it and how the buildings will interact and be in
harmony with each other. As these architects have said, "Landscape makes a building / space
much more."

Due to his spectacular creations, André Le
Nôtre, who lived in France in the 17th
century, became an icon of French
landscaping. As he was born in Paris in 1613,
he was essentially born into gardening as
having been the son and grandson of Royal
Park Supervisors who formerly worked in
the gardens of the now-demolished Palais
de Tuileres. Le Nôtre succeeded his father
as the head gardener of the Tuileries in 1637
as he grew older.

His life has taken on some exciting new
dimensions, just like his gardens. It is no
longer sufficient to merely mention the

Frederick Law Olmsted was born in Hartford,
Connecticut, in 1822. When he was eight years old,
his father sent him to a local clergyman to obtain
his education. Olmsted spent the following
twenty years traveling and working variously as a
prosperous farmer, writer, journalist, and
merchant after illness stopped him from enrolling
in Yale College in 1837.

He spent the following 20 years acquiring

knowledge and abilities from a range of pursuits,
which he later applied to founding the profession
of landscape architecture. Olmsted was the first
Central Park to adopt the term "landscape architect" as a
professional title, and he considered it to be a
form of art rather than merely a vocation. He is
popularly called the "Maker of Parks".

Lancelot Brown, a Northumberland native,
was born in Kirkharle and attended school
there until he was sixteen years old. He then
quit to work as an apprentice head gardener
at Kirkharle Hall, where he remained until he
was twenty-three. After learning under the
direction of others for a number of years, he
made his way south, first to Lincolnshire and
then to Kiddington Hall in Oxfordshire. His
first landscape contract called for the
construction of a new lake in the hall's park
grounds.

Burle Marx, who was born in So Paulo and was
raised in Rio de Janeiro, went to Berlin in 1928 to
study art. He was first exposed to the creative
potential of tropical vegetation during trips to the
Dahlem Botanical Gardens in the city. He put these
theories to the test by experimenting with local
plants at his house when he returned to Rio in 1930
to study art at the National Academy of Fine Arts.
Burle Marx's work attracted the attention of his
professor, architect Lcio Costa, who hired him to
create the first garden for the Schwartz House.

Innovative Modernist designs by Burle Marx

immediately became well-known. He considered his
Cavanellas Residence landscapes as works of art, thinking of them first
and foremost as paintings, and used vibrant
amorphous paving patterns and daring
combinations of massed plantings as his color pallet.
02 SIGNIFICANT WORKS He devoted his life to the study of horticulture and
traveled to Brazil's jungles from his farm Barra de
Edmundo Cavanellas Guaratiba in search of new plant specimens. Burle

Vargem Grande Fazenda Brazilians to oppose deforestation in public.

Olivo Gomes Residence

Burle Marx’s approach is clear in all aspects of his

Marx
Raul de Souza Martins design work – from the design plans, which were
Residence works of art in themselves, to the bold, sinuous lines
of his gardens, to the sculptural nature of the plants
used within them.
