Series and Parallel Practical
Series and Parallel Practical
Aim :- To determine the equivalent resistances of 2 resistances when they are connected in (i) series (ii) parallel
Apparatus required :- 2 known resistance coils, ammeter, voltmeter, one – way plug key, low resistance rheostat,
Procedure :-
1) Connect the circuit in a manner as shown in circuit diagram (I) so that the two resistors are in series.
2) Find the zero error and least count of the voltmeter and ammeter and record it. Find the theoretical value of the
combination of resistances and record it.
3) Put the plug key in the key and take the reading of ammeter and voltmeter.
4) Repeat the step 2 three times by changing the position of the sliding contact of the rheostat.
5) Tabulate the reading and find the ratio of V and I. It will give the equivalent resistance of the combination.
6) Now connect the circuit as per diagram (II) so that the 2 resistors are in parallel.
7) Repeat steps 3-5.
Result:-
1. There is close agreement between the theoretical values and the values obtained by the experiment.

Precautions:-
1. Remove dust and other insulating particles from the ends of the connecting wires by rubbing them with sand paper.
2. All the connections should be tight and properly connected as per circuit diagram.
3. Take out the plug from the plug key in between the 2 observations.
4. A low resistance rheostat should be used in the circuit to obtain a large variation in current.
5. A thick copper connecting wire should be used in the circuit.
6. The positive terminal of the ammeter and voltmeter must be connected to the positive terminal of the battery or battery
eliminator.
7. Never connect the 2 terminals of the battery eliminator without any resistance.
