are made from Bayblend FR3010 and meet the requirements of UL fire protection class V0.

In the housing are ventilation slits. The ventilation slits are located in the front underneath the keypad and
at the top behind the lid. The air for cooling the condenser and electronic components is directed from
front to back through the ventilation slits.

The housing screw connections are equipped with covers.

2.1.3 Lid

The complete lid assembly consists of a metal lid and lid covering. The metal lid is made of edged,
surface-treated sheet metal.

The metal lid includes a foamed insulation layer. A monitoring glass is located in the middle of the lid; the
magnet for the lid latch reed switch is located on the front right edge of the lid.

Oblong recesses are located to the right and left of the front side of the metal lid. The locking hooks grip in
these recesses.

The lid relief contains four leg springs, which automatically lift up the lid and hold it open.

2.1.4 Lid latch

All lid latch components are mounted to the lid latch console. The lid latch console is a piece of galvanized
sheet metal which is vertically mounted to front of the bottom plate.

The lid latch is made of two locking hooks. The hooks are connected via an axis and synchronously travel a
defined curved track. The drive is a lid latch motor. An additional gear segment is used to transmit power
between the motor and the locking hook. The housing Reed sensor and the magnet in the metal lid provide
the signal for the lid latch to close. The lid latch motor starts at a max. distance of 10 mm and the locking
hooks travel to the closed position. After this end position has been reached, the left locking hook activates
a microswitch. The microswitch indicates that the lid is securely closed. The centrifuge can only be started
after the control has received this signal. To detect a failure of the microswitch, the lid latch travels to the
"open" position every time the centrifuge is switched on. As signals from the sensor and magnet are
required to start the lid latch motor, the lid latch will not be activated if the Reed sensor or magnet are
defective.

The lid latch can also be unlocked using the emergency release when it is deenergized or switched off. The
emergency release is located on the right side behind a plastic cover. The emergency release must be used
operated using the rotor key.

2.1.5 Universal PCB control

The condenser fan, compressor fan, and processor for controlling the converter, are located on the PCB
control. The signals from the motor (speed) and temperature sensor in the condenser and rotor chamber
are recorded here and evaluated by the software. The PCB control is mounted onto the upper part of the
housing from the inside using four screws.

2.1.6 PCB converter

The PCB converter is located at the right rear, vertically mounted to the PCB console. The PCB converter
contains two processors. One processor controls the compressor using parameters from the PCB control.
The second processor is responsible for controlling the drive motor.

2.1.7 Motor

The drive motor is a 3-phase electric motor. The motor is mounted to 3 horizontally bolted rubber metal
mounts. The rubber metal mounts are screwed onto a plate, which is mounted onto the chassis bottom
plate from below.

To control the speed, a speed sensor is integrated into the motor.

The upper end of the motor shaft has a cone and thread to hold the rotor. The rotor is secured using this
screw connection and friction-locked onto the cone by applying pressure.

2.1.8 Brake resistor

The brake resistor provides a controlled reduction in motor speed. Two different brake resistors are used
depending on the voltage version of the device: one for 230 V/120 V and one for 100 V. The brake resistor
is monitored by a sensor (thermoswitch). If the temperature increases above a specific value, the
thermoswitch opens and the centrifuge switches off completely, i.e. the current supply is interrupted.

2.1.9 Fan

The centrifuge contains two fans. The main fan is located behind the condenser and removes the air from
the front ventilation slits. First, the suctioned air flows through the condenser and then the drive motor. A
second fan blows the air out of the device via the upper rear ventilation slit.

2.1.10 Refrigeration unit

The refrigeration unit is composed of: lifting piston compressor, condenser (two-row), R134a refrigerant,
evaporator and dryer. A capillary tube is the throttle device for pressure reduction. The evaporator tube is
wrapped around the coated rotor chamber and covered in insulation. The refrigerating capacity is
monitored by two temperature sensors positioned in the rotor chamber and on the condenser.

PS 10 Compulsory testing in Germany (BGR 500)
The accident prevention regulation BGR 500 (formerly VBG 7z) is valid in Germany.
Centrifuges with a rated power of > 500 W or a kinetic energy of > 10,000 Nm are subject to
testing.
The following Eppendorf AG centrifuges are subject to testing: Centrifuge 5804, 5804 R,
5810, 5810 R, 5810 RA, 5920 R.
These centrifuges must be tested once a year in their operating state and at least every 3
years in a dismantled state.
Rotors with a kinetic energy of ≤ 10,000 Nm are not subject to testing. Rotors that are used
in centrifuges subject to testing must be tested independent of their power output.
The owner of the centrifuge is obliged to document and keep the check results.

9.4 Device tests for centrifuges

9.4.1 Speed check

Measuring device
• Digital hand tachometer suitable for contactless measurement, or stroboscope
• Measurement range: 1 to ≥ 30,000 rpm
• Accuracy: ≤ 0.1%
1. Install the rotor.
2. Fully load the rotor with filled tubes.
3. Mark the rotor hub with a reflector (measuring device accessory).
4. Close the centrifuge lid.
5. Start the centrifuge with the desired speed. Let the centrifuge run until the speed has stabilized.
6. Measure the speed via the monitoring glass in the centrifuge lid using the operating manual of the
measuring device.
7. Note the measuring result.
8. If required, repeat steps 5 to 7 for other rotational speeds.
A recommendation on the rotational speeds to be tested, and their tolerances, can be found in the technical
data or OQ of the corresponding centrifuge.

9.4.2 Temperature check

Ambient temperature: 23°C ± 2°C

Measuring device
• Thermometer with a temperature sensor and a low internal heat capacity, e.g. thermocouple, max. Ø
0.5 mm)
• Measurement range: 0 °C to ≥ 100 °C
• Accuracy: ≤ 0.1°C
Auxiliary equipment
• Rotor
• Tubes that fit the rotor, with min. volume of 1.5 mL

9.4.2.1 Refrigerated centrifuges

1. Install the rotor and load it symmetrically with tubes.

2. Fill the tubes with ethylene glycol.
3. Set the maximum rotational speed.
4. Set the minimum temperature that can be achieved (depends on the rotor).
5. Precool the centrifuge and rotor with tubes and with adapters, if required, using fast temp (refer to the
operating manual for the centrifuge).
6. Start the centrifuge with the previously set max. speed and min. temperature.
7. Wait for 60 min. Then stop the centrifuge.
8. Measure the temperature in the center of the tubes immediately after opening.
9. Compare the sample temperature with the temperature displayed by the centrifuge.
Maintenance
60 Centrifuge 5418 R
English (EN)

9.4.2.2 Non-refrigerated centrifuges

For non-refrigerated centrifuges, sample heating is checked against the ambient temperature.

1. Install the rotor and load it symmetrically with tubes.

2. Fill the tubes with ethylene glycol.
3. Set the maximum rotational speed.
4. Start the centrifuge and let it run for at least 45 min.
5. Measure the ambient temperature.
6. Stop the centrifuge and measure the temperature in the center of the tubes immediately after opening.
7. Compare the ambient temperature and sample temperature.

A recommendation on the temperatures to be tested, and their tolerances, can be found in the technical
data or OQ of the corresponding centrifuge.

9.4.3 Timer check

Measuring device
• Stopwatch
• Accuracy: ≤ 0.1 seconds
1. Set the run time to continuous operation.
2. Start the centrifuge and stopwatch at the same time.
3. Allow the centrifuge to run at least 5 min.
4. Compare the time displayed by the centrifuge with the time measured by the stopwatch.

A recommendation on the times to be tested, and their tolerances, can be found in the technical data or OQ
of the corresponding centrifuge.

9.4.4 Electrical safety check

Effective standard
• Pre-IEC 62638 (international)
• VDE 701/702 (Germany)
• NFPA 99 (USA)

Notes concerning the measuring procedure:

• The electrical safety check may only be carried out by a suitably trained electrician.
• After repairs or after work on the electrical system of the centrifuge (incl. protective earth conductor
system) the electrical safety must be tested.
• The electrical safety must be checked at regular intervals (e.g. every 12 months).
• Measure on a grounded, metallic point that is not insulated and can be touched from the outside (e.g.
housing screws).
• The leakage current or resistance of the PE conductor cannot be measured at the centrifuge lid, rotor, or
motor shaft.
• Never measure at any interfaces that may be present. The centrifuge electronics could become
damaged.
• Due to the internal electrical design of the centrifuge, the insulation resistance cannot be measured
correctly.
• Due to the internal electrical design of the centrifuge, the equivalent leakage current cannot be
measured correctly.
→ Always measure the real leakage current (direct measurement or differential current measurement).
