Department of CSE (Artificial Intelligence & Data Science)

Title of the Term Paper : Camera-Based Human-Computer Interaction through Hand Gesture
Recognition
Name of the Course : B.Tech. (CSE-AI&DS) Semester: 6th
Academic Year : 2023-2024
Supervisor Name : Dr N. Lakshmi Devi
ABSTRACT:
The efficacy of natural human-computer interaction heavily relies on the precision and efficiency of hand
gesture recognition and voice-based control. However, improving the accuracy and speed of these methods
remains a significant challenge. Traditional approaches utilizing external devices like gloves or LEDs often
disrupt the flow of interaction. This study proposes an extensive gesture recognition system consisting of four
modules aimed at addressing these challenges. In the Hand Gestures based Model, the initial module utilizes
Genetic Algorithm and Otsu thresholding techniques to accurately differentiate hand gestures from input
images, thereby ensuring precise interaction. The subsequent module extends functionality beyond document
handling, enabling navigation through folders and drives to enhance productivity. The third module employs the
convex hull method for finger counting, facilitating responsive gesture interpretation and action execution.
Moreover, adaptive filtering and YCbCr filtering techniques enhance hand detection in varying conditions. The
novel Gesture Customization Module enables users to dynamically define and customize gestures, tailoring the
system to individual preferences and workflows. In the voice-based control aspect, the microphone captures
user commands, processes them, and executes the corresponding operations. These features promote user
engagement and satisfaction by fostering intuitive human-computer interaction. Collectively, these modules
constitute a robust gesture recognition and voice-based control system that strikes a balance between accuracy
and speed while offering flexibility and customization. This system holds the promise of enhancing overall
usability and effectiveness across diverse applications and environments.
