IS
DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM?
WHAT IS DIFFERENTIAL?
IT IS A DEVICE CAPABLE OF
TRANSMITTING ENGINE’S TORQUE TO THE
DRIVE WHEELS.
WHAT IS DIFFERENTIAL?

IT TAKES THE TORQUE POWER FROM


THE ENGINE AND SPLITS IT, ALLOWING THE
WHEELS TO SPIN AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS.
WHAT IS DIFFERENTIAL?

IN AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS, THE


DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING IS SOMETIMES
COLLOQUIALLY CALLED A “PUMPKIN” AS THE
DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING TYPICALLY
RESEMBLES AS “PUMPKIN”.

COMMON TYPES
OF
DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM
A. OPEN DIFFERENTIAL
THIS TYPE OF DIFFERENTIAL IS THE
MOST BASIC AND ONLY ALLOWS FOR
VARIATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL WHEEL SPEED OR
SLIP BUT THAT’S IT. IN OPTIMAL ROAD
CONDITIONS, IT ALLOWS THE OUTSIDE WHEEL
TO ROTATE FASTER THAN THE INSIDE WHEEL.
A. OPEN DIFFERENTIAL

THE PROBLEM IS WHEN ROAD


CONDITIONS ARE NOT IDEAL SUCH AS ON WET
PAVEMENT, ICE, SNOW OR GRAVEL.
A. OPEN DIFFERENTIAL
WITH AN OPEN DIFFERENTIAL, THE
ENGINE TORQUE STILL TRANSFERS EVEN IF
THE WHEEL HAS ZERO TRACTION SO THAT
SLIPPING TIRE WILL SIMPLY SPIN AND NOT GO
ANYWHERE.
B. LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
IT ACTS JUST LIKE AN OPEN DIFFERENTIAL
AND TRANSFERS TORQUE INDEPENDENTLY TO EACH
DRIVE WHEELS. BUT UNDER HARD CORNERING OR
HEAVY ACCELERATION WHERE AN OPEN
DIFFERENTIAL WOULD GENERALLY CAUSE A TIRE TO
SLIP, THE LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL PREVENTS THE
NORMAL AMOUNT OF TORQUE TO GO TO THE
SLIPPING TIRE.
C. LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL
IT IS COMMON FOUND ON MANY OFF-
ROAD VEHICLES AND SOME PERFORMANCE
CARS, LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL USE CLUTCHES
AND SPRINGS TO ACTIVATE A LOCK WHICH
SENDS AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF POWER TO EACH
WHEEL NO MATTER THE TRACTION SITUATION.
THIS ESSENTIALLY CREATES A FIXED AXLE.
C. LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL

AT HIGHER SPEEDS THIS IS A


NEGATIVE TRACTION BUT WHEN OFF-
ROADING OR ROCK CLIMBING, IT’S A BIG
ADVANTAGE.
PRINCIPLE AND OPERATION
OF
DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM
PRINCIPLE AND OPERATION OF DIFFERENTIAL
IF THE INNER WHEEL AXLE HAS BEEN
STOPPED BY HAND BUT THE DIFFERENTIAL
UNIT IS STILL ROTATING. THUS THE OUTER
WHEEL CAN NOW ROTATE AT A FASTER SPEED.
A SIMILAR ARRANGEMENT IS MADE IN THE
DIFFERENTIAL UNIT.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF DIFFERENTIAL
AT THE TIME OF STRAIGHT ROAD
DURING THE VEHICLE RUNS STRAIGHT,
THE WHEELS OF THE REAR AXLE WILL BE
SCREENED BY THE DRIVE PINION THROUGH THE
RING GEAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE, WHEEL TO WHEEL
DIFFERENTIAL GEAR PINION SHAFT, SIDE GEAR
TEETH IS NOT SPINNING, REMAIN TO BE DRAWN
INTO THE RING GEAR ROTATION.

AT THE TIME OF STRAIGHT ROAD


THUS THE SPIN ON THE WHEEL LEFT
AND RIGHT ALIKE.

AT THE TIME OF TURNING


AT THE TIME OF VEHICLE TURNING
LEFT PRISONERS LEFT WHEEL IS BIGGER
THAN THE RIGHT WHEEL.

AT THE TIME OF TURNING


IF THE DIFFERENTIAL CASE WITH THE RING
GEAR ROTATES THE PINION WILL ROTATE ON ITS
AXIS AND ALSO THE MOVEMENT AROUND THE LEFT
SIDE GEAR
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF DIFFERENTIAL

AT THE TIME OF TURNING


SO ROUND THE RIGHT HAND SIDE
GEAR INCREASES, THE SIDE WHERE THE
NUMBER OF REVOLUTIONS OF THE GEAR
WHICH IS 2 TIMES ROUND THE RING GEAR.
