What is Tennis Ball

Tennis balls have become an increasingly competitive product for brands in recent years as the boom in
tennis popularity has led to a huge increase in sales of balls. Dunlop is one of the oldest and most well-respected
brands in tennis and in recent years their focus on producing tennis balls has given them huge success both on
the professional tour and in tennis clubs around the world.

Dunlop is the official ball supplier for the ATP Tour and the Australian Open so it’s no surprise that all three of
their ‘top of the range’ balls feature these endorsements.

Process Flow Diagram

Natural Rubber
To make the ideal rubber compound, we begin with pure natural rubber and then incorporate our proprietary
mixture. The next step is to measure and extrude individual blanks, which are the components that make up a
tennis ball. Strict guidelines are followed during this process to guarantee quality and consistency.

Blanks to Half Shells

We then use controlled pressure and temperature to mold the blanks into half-shells and we add adhesive to the
edge of each half-shell.

Vulcanization
Now we’re getting into it. Now it’s time for the vulcanization process. We bond the half shells together in a
temperature-controlled press. This adds the internal air pressure consistently to each rubber core. This is why
they bounce the way they do.

How tennis balls get their color

A strong textile fabric composed of a high-quality blend of natural wool and nylon is meticulously bonded to
the rubber core. Maximal visibility and reliable playability are guaranteed by the color we selected. This color
was chosen in large part because TV cameras could see better with it than with regular white tennis balls—
especially during live events.

The final cure

The cloth and core are fused during the final cure using regulated pressure and heat. The white rubber seams on
the ball are created by this procedure.

Going for a steam

We then ‘steam’ the ball in a large dryer. This is what ‘fluffs’ up the cloth. And the tennis balls come out
feeling all relaxed and refreshed (we assume).

Time to test
Then we rigorously test the balls in the lab. This makes sure they meet the highest possible quality standards
and conform to international specifications. Things we are looking for include size, mass, bounce height, and
compression.

Finally
Once passed, we stamp the Dunlop ATP logo and add it to the ATP tin. We package and seal the balls in
pressurized cans. This makes sure the ball properties remain consistent until ready for play. Then they are
shipped off all over the world.
Equipment Process

Rubber Compounding Equipment: This includes machinery to mix rubber compounds. Rubber is the primary
material used for the core of tennis balls.

Extrusion Machines: These are used to shape the rubber into a cylindrical form, which will become the core of
the tennis ball.

Pre-Press Machines: These machines compress the rubber into a more compact form before it's molded into
the final shape.

Molding Machines: Tennis ball molding machines shape the rubber core into a sphere and apply pressure to
ensure it's compact and uniform.

Felt Application Equipment

- After the rubber core is formed, it's covered with a layer of felt. Equipment is needed to apply
adhesive and attach the felt to the core evenly.

Cutting Machine
- Once the felt-covered cores are formed, they need to be cut to the exact size and shape of a tennis
ball.

Quality Control Equipment

- Various machines and tools are used to ensure the weight, size, bounce, and other characteristics of
the tennis balls meet industry standards.

Packaging Machinery
- Finally, equipment is needed to package the tennis balls efficiently, whether it's in cans or boxes,
ready for distribution.

Materials

Official tennis balls are made of a rubber compound with felt covering them. The official diameter of the ball
falls between 2.57 inches and 2.70 inches, and the mass can be anywhere from 1.98 ounces to 2.10 ounces.
