Location: ESE CL-113 (Wed, Fri) and ESE CL 113 (On Thursday afternoons)
Class Timings: Wed, Fri 11.05AM-12.30PM and Thu 2-3.25 PM (Tutorial)
Office hours: Thursday 10-11 AM or by Appointment.

Course content:
1. Linear Vector space - Scalar product, Metric spaces, Linear operator, Matrix
algebra, Eigenvalues and Eigenvector, , Infinite dimensional vector spaces,
Introduction to tensors.

2. Theory of analytical functions : Complex analysis - Complex numbers,


Cauchy-Riemann condition, Analytic function, Taylor and Laurent series,
Classification of singularities, Series, Calculus of residue, Various contour
integration, Conformal mapping , Riemann surface, Branch cut integrals,
Analytic continuation, Integral approximation.
Primary Reference Material: Mathematical Methods for Physicists, Arfken and
Weber, 7th ed., Chapters 5, 6, 11.

General instructions:
1. Assignments: There will be assignments every week for your own
understanding. While these carry no grades they will be crucial towards
solving quiz and exam problems.
2. Academic Honesty: You are encouraged to discuss the assignment problems
but forbidden from plagiarising work of any colleague. Academic dishonesty is

3. Grading: There will be two quizzes each carrying 10 points. The midsems will
account for 30 points and the end sem exam will carry 50 points. The
minimum score to pass the course is 40 points. There will be relative grading
in this course. The dates for the quizzes and exams are as follows:

Quiz 1: Thursday, 2-3.30 PM, ESE CL-113, August 29, 2024.


Quiz 2: Thursday, 2-3.30 PM, ESE LC 109, October 24, 2024.

Mid-sem Exam: September 14 - Sep 22, 2024.

End-sem Exam: November 11 - November 23, 2024.
