INTRODUCTION
ACEM SALARY SURVEY 2024
INTRODUCTION
What is it?
The ACEM Salary Survey 2024 is a comprehensive study aimed at understanding the salary landscape within the
consulting engineering industry in Malaysia. This annual survey collects detailed salary information from various
engineering firms to provide insights into compensation trends, helping both employers and employees benchmark
their pay against industry standards.
Pre-COVID vs 2023
One of the key aspects of the survey is the comparison between pre-COVID income and employment data with the
figures from 2023. This comparison highlights how the pandemic has impacted salaries, employment rates, and
overall industry stability, offering a historical perspective on how the sector has evolved.
Data source
The data for this survey is collected from consulting engineering firms across Malaysia. The survey relies on self-
reported data from participating firms, ensuring a comprehensive and accurate representation of the industry.
RESPONDENTS
Respondents
The survey received responses from a diverse range of consulting engineering firms across Malaysia. The number of
respondents, the total number of employees they represent, and the states from which they hail are detailed in this
section. This broad participation ensures the data is representative of the industry as a whole.
Number of respondents
The survey covers over 50 companies, which collectively employ over 3,000 engineers, giving insights into salary
trends across different levels of experience and qualifications.
States
The survey includes data from seven (7) states, ensuring regional salary differences are captured and analyzed.

The breakdown of respondents by “Company Category” (e.g., small, medium, large firms) are based on SME Corp’s
definition of “Services and Other Sector” category (https://www.smecorp.gov.my/).
Medium Sales turnover from RM3 mil to not exceeding RM20 mil
OR employees from 30 to not exceeding 75
Firms exceeding the “Medium” sized enterprise category are labeled “Large” firms in this report.
The distribution of respondents across different engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical, etc. are
shown in the “Discipline” chart. Over 73% of the respondents are from the Civil, Mechanical & Electrical and Civil &
Structural practice consultancy firms.
In terms of “Company Category”, over 70% of the respondents’ firms are formed as Sdn Bhd, followed by 20.8% Sole
Proprietors.
While over half of the respondents are “Small” firms, the number of employees represented by the “Large” firms are
significantly high, where over 70% of the total employees represented in this survey are employed by the “Large” firms.

In general, firms have shown growth in employment, with 13.8% their headquarters and 16.7% at the construction
sites, demonstrating a healthy recovery since pre pandemic levels. Interestingly, the categories of firms (i.e., micro,
small, medium, large) remain relatively the same.
While employment has increased, only “Large” firms have experience revenue growths. “Small” and “Medium” firms
have experienced decreasing revenues compared to pre-pandemic levels, with no “Medium” sized firms recording
RM10-15.0 million revenue in 2023, compared to Pre-COVID 19, and less firms recording RM5-10.0 million revenue
in 2023. There were also a few “Medium” sized firms that dropped to RM1-2.0 million revenue in 2023. Similarly, no
“Small” firms recorded revenues higher than RM5.0 million in 2023 and more firms experienced a decrease in revenue,
as demonstrated by the decreased number of firms reporting RM2-5.0 million revenue in 2023. However, the “Large”
firms experienced revenue growths, with more firms reporting revenues between RM25-50million in 2023 compared
to Pre-COVID 19 levels.

Years of Experience
Overall, the lowest salary for a professional reported in the survey is RM1,800, which is that of a fresh graduate’s.
Meanwhile, the highest salary is reported at RM37,500 for a 30-year experienced Electrical PEPC. However, the median
salaries for the same experience levels and qualifications are between RM2,550 and RM17,300. Without improvements
in qualifications (i.e., PE or PEPC), salary increments range between 4-9% in the first 10 years, but drop to 2.5-4%
between 11-30 years of experience.
There is relatively stagnant growth of salaries beyond 20 years of experience, and even a salary drop for engineers with
over 30 years of experience, particularly in the mechanical and electrical trades.
For semi-professionals like CAD operators, technical assistants and IOWs, the salaries start at RM1,500 for a fresh
graduate and increase to a maximum of RM8,000 for an employee with over 30-years of experience, depending on
trade and qualifications.
The specific salaries by discipline and qualifications are illustrated in the following pages.

CONCLUSION
The ACEM Salary Survey 2024 provides a detailed analysis of the salary landscape in Malaysia’s consulting engineering
industry. By comparing pre-COVID data with current figures, the survey offers valuable insights into how the pandemic
has affected the sector. Key findings indicate:
Employment levels have shown significant recovery, with large firms experiencing revenue growth, while small and
medium firms face challenges.
b. Salary Trends
Fresh engineering graduates start at RM1,800, with salaries peaking at RM37,500 for highly experienced
professionals. Median salaries range from RM2,550 for entry-level positions to RM17,300 for senior-level
professionals. This highlights the importance of continuous professional development and achieving higher
qualifications like PE or PEPC for better salary prospects. Salary growth are healthy for professionals between
1-10 year experience, but becomes stagnant or in some cases, reduced, beyond 20 years of experience.
c. Regional Disparities
Salaries differ across regions, with higher pay in industrially active states like Selangor and Kuala Lumpur
compared to others.
These insights are crucial for both employers and employees to benchmark salaries and make informed decisions.
Employers can use this data to structure competitive and fair compensation packages, attracting and retaining talent.
Employees can better understand industry standards, aiding in career planning and negotiations.
The data indicates a robust recovery in the consulting engineering sector, albeit uneven across different firm sizes
and regions. Large firms are capitalizing on the economic rebound, whereas smaller firms need to adapt to changing
market conditions.
The ACEM Salary Survey 2024 serves as a critical tool for understanding and navigating the evolving salary trends in
the consulting engineering industry. By providing a comprehensive overview, ACEM continues to support its members
and the broader engineering community in achieving competitive and equitable compensation practices.
