Abstract
Orlando Rescue Mission is at 1521 W Washington St, Orlando, FL 32805. The non-profit
organization is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm. The organization offers
many classes/activities for the community that resides there. The attendees of the Orlando
Rescue mission participate in activities at the center on an at-will basis. The contact for this
community dental health project is Justin Harvey. Justin Harvey is the volunteer coordinator for
the center. The information for this assessment comes from interviewing the contact, as well as
from research our group has done on this target population. Our research has identified that the
children may have limited access to dental health. In addition to that, cases of gingivitis and
periodontal disease are increasing within the children’s community. Our dental public health
project will provide information about dental hygiene and the importance of prevention. The
Orlando Rescue Mission children’s community will learn information that will assist them in
preventing cavities and maintaining healthy habits in prevention. Insights for this assessment are
derived from interviews with Mr. Harvey and additional research on the target population.

The primary needs of the children at the Orlando Rescue Mission revolve around
improved access to dental health services and education. Our research, coupled with interviews
with Justin Harvey, indicates that many children lack regular dental check-ups, which results in
gingivitis and periodontal disease. Therefore, the most pressing needs include ensuring that
children receive regular dental check-ups and treatment to address existing dental issues,
providing comprehensive education on proper dental hygiene practices, including the importance
of brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits, and offering resources and information on
preventive care to avoid future dental problems. This includes promoting a balanced diet and
Understanding the interests of the children at the Orlando Rescue Mission is crucial for
the success of our project. According to Justin Harvey, children prefer interactive and engaging
learning methods. Their interests include hands-on activities and demonstrations that make
learning about dental hygiene fun and engaging. The use of visual aids such as posters,
flipcharts, and educational videos helps retain their attention and enhances understanding.
Activities that allow the children to practice dental hygiene techniques, such as brushing and
flossing sessions, are highly effective. The level of dental knowledge among the children at the
Orlando Rescue Mission is generally limited but varies. Insights from both our research and
conversations with Mr. Harvey reveal that while some children have a basic understanding of
brushing their teeth, they often lack knowledge about the importance of flossing and the benefits
of regular dental check-ups. Dental hygiene practices among the children are inconsistent,
mainly due to a lack of resources and proper guidance. However, many children are eager to

learn and improve their dental hygiene habits when provided with the right information and
tools.
Assessing the resources available to the children is essential for tailoring our project to
their needs. Financial constraints and site resources are significant factors. Many families and
children at the Orlando Rescue Mission face financial difficulties, limiting their access to dental
care products and services. While the center provides some basic dental hygiene supplies, they
are often insufficient. Additional resources such as toothbrushes, floss, and educational materials
are needed. The Orlando Rescue Mission benefits from donations and volunteer support, which
The dental status of the children at the Orlando Rescue Mission reflects a need for
immediate intervention and ongoing support. Based on information from Justin Harvey and our
research, we have identified a notable prevalence of dental issues such as cavities, gingivitis, and
early signs of periodontal disease. Many children have not had regular dental check-ups or
professional cleanings, which exacerbates dental problems. Addressing existing dental issues and
preventing further deterioration of dental health is crucial. By understanding and addressing the
needs, interests, abilities, resources, and current dental status of the children at the Orlando
Rescue Mission, our project aims to make a significant impact. Through education and practical
interventions, we hope to improve the dental health and overall well-being of this vulnerable
population, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources to maintain healthy dental habits.
