APA Style

❖ What is a referencing style?

A referencing or citation style is a set of guidelines on formatting a paper and how to cite sources in
your academic writing. You always need a citation whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize a
source to avoid plagiarism. How you present these citations depends on the style you follow.

❖ APA Style

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is a widely used format for writing academic
papers such as social sciences, education, psychology etc. It provides guidelines on various aspects
of writing, including structure, format, citation, and references.
APA requires that information be cited in 2 different ways. Within the text and in a reference list at
the end of the paper. The reference list should be on a new page, double spaced, and use the
hanging indent method

➢ General Formatting Guidelines

1. Title Page: Include a title page with the following information centered and double-spaced: title
of the paper, author's name, and institutional affiliation. The title should be in title case and
centered.
2. Font: Use a readable font like 12-pt Times New Roman.
3. Margins: Set 1-inch margins on all sides.
4. Line Spacing: Double-space the entire document.
5. Indentation: Indent the first line of every paragraph 0.5 inches.
6. Page Header: Include a page header (also known as the "running head") at the top of every page.
The running head is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50 characters,
including spacing and punctuation.
7. Format of heading:
Centered, Bold, Title Case Heading

Flush Left, Bold, Title Case Heading

Flush Left, Bold Italic, Title Case Heading

Text
Text includes your full research and your findings to a particular problem you discussed. It also
requires the citations whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize a source to avoid plagiarism.
There are two types of citations.
➢ In-Text Citations
1. In-text citations in APA format follow the author-date method, meaning the author's last name
and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text.
2. When a work has 2 authors cite both names every time you reference the work in the text.
3. When a work has three to five authors, cite all the author names the first time the reference occurs
and then subsequently include only the first author followed by et al.
4. For 6 or more authors, cite only the name of the first author followed by et al.
5. When a resource has no named author, cite the first few words (usually the title).
o Use double quotation marks around the title of an article, chapter, or Web page.
o Italicize the title of a periodical, book, brochure, or report.

1. One Author: (Smith, 2020)

2. Two Authors: (Smith & Jones, 2020)
3. Three or More Authors: (Smith, peter & Gomes, 2020), (Smith et al, 2020)
4. Direct Quotation: (Smith, 2020, p. 15)
5. No Author: (“Medical Miracles,” 2009), (Education Reform, 2007)
➢ Reference List
The reference list should start on a new page at the end of the document and provide full details of
all sources cited in the text as guided below
1. Title: Center the title "References" at the top of the page.
2. Order: Alphabetize entries by the last name of the first author of each work.
3. Hanging Indent: Use a hanging indent for each reference (the first line of the reference is flush
left, and subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches).
