Assignment One: Investigation for Empty Containers Problem

1. Discuss 4 reasons that formulated this problem worldwide using statistics, graphs
and argument of multinational associations.

The shipping shortages resulted from multiple factors, including the:


1- Pandemic.
As the pandemic spread out from its Asian epicentre, countries implemented lockdowns, halting
economic movements and production.
Many factories temporarily closed, causing large numbers of containers to be stopped at ports. To
stabilize costs and the erosion of ocean rates, carriers reduced the number of vessels out at sea.
Transition to e-commerce shopping.
Not only did this put the brakes on import and export, it also meant empty containers were not picked up.
This was especially significant for Asian traders, who couldn't retrieve empty containers from North
America.

2- China.
Along with the panamedic , one of the major points that impacted the supplychain is the Chinese New
Year. Celebrated on 12 February, the holiday played a bigger part than normal when it came to container
shortage. As , Generally, the industry can expect to see an increase in container tariffs and a slowdown of
Chinese production due to most of the population being on holiday. This year, the impact was greatly
magnified due to the ongoing container shortage.

3- Sailings canceled.
Blank or canceled sailings are also on the rise in what is usually the opposite, as the year’s biggest
spending period approaches.

A blank sailing happens when a shipping company decides to skip a port or an entire leg of its schedule to
manage changes in demand and capacity.
In its latest canceled sailings analysis, Drewry said between late November and early December, 14% of
sailings have been canceled across major container shipping routes.
Nearly 60% of the 200 freight forwarders, traders and shippers that Container xChange spoke to in a
survey last month said they were grappling with geopolitical, economic and political risks which have
imposed downward pressures on consumption and therefore demand for containers.

percentage reductions in empty container logistics and maintenance costs as well as significant
fleet size reductions while maintaining service levels.
