The psychological effects of marijuana are a spectrum of responses that are crucial to

understand in the context of its use. Marijuana is also called weed, herb, ganja, and several other

names. It is a greenish-grayish-dried flower known as cannabis sativa. Marijuana has been used

to brew tea and medicinal purposes, because of the psychoactive chemical THC which people

seek. “Among people aged 12 or older in 2021, 18.7%( or about 52.2 million people ) reported

using cannabis in the past 12 months ``(1) When marijuana is smoked, thc and other chemicals in

the plant passes in the bloodstream, which throughout the body to the brain at a rapid pace. Many

people who take marijuana experience positive effects such as euphoria, less anxiety, and overall

a better mood. People also experienced effects such as heightened sensory perception, increased

appetite, and change in time perception.

Short-term psychological effects

The short-term effects of marijuana can include altered mood, ranging from euphoria to

anxiety or paranoia. It often impairs recollection and concentration, affecting cognitive functions.

Changes in judgment and coordination are common, impacting tasks like driving. Physiological

effects may include increased heart rate and bloodshot eyes. While some users experience

relaxation, others may feel heightened anxiety. The intensity of these effects can vary based on

factors like strain, dosage, and individual differences. Understanding these short-term effects is

crucial for responsible and informed use. Long-term psychological effects can cause ;

(1) effect on mental health conditions; (2) anxiety ; (3) depression and

potential for addiction and dependence. (1)

Individual factors and differences

Individual factors play a significant role in how marijuana affects people. Variables such as

tolerance, metabolism, and overall health can influence the intensity and duration of its effects.

Psychological factors, including mood and mindset, also contribute to the individual experience.

Additionally, the method of consumption (smoking, edibles, etc.) and the specific strain of

marijuana can impact reactions. Age is a critical factor, as the developing brain in adolescents

may respond differently. Understanding these individual differences is essential for tailoring

public health messages and policies around marijuana use.

Risks and considerations

Marijuana use has been linked to increased risk of mental health issues, including anxiety and

depression. Individuals with a predisposition to mental health disorders may be more vulnerable.

Some users may develop a dependence on marijuana, experiencing withdrawal symptoms

when not using it. This dependency can have negative impacts on daily life and productivity.

Short-term memory and concentration can be adversely affected, impacting academic or work

performance and activities that require focus. Smoking marijuana poses risks to respiratory

health, similar to tobacco smoke. Chronic use may lead to respiratory issues and can impair

judgment and coordination, posing risks in situations that require alertness, such as driving. when

used by adolescence, while the brain is still developing, it may have lasting impacts on cognitive

function and mental health.

both short-term and long-term implications. While its potential therapeutic benefits, especially in

medical contexts, are being explored, it is crucial to acknowledge and address associated risks.

and safety. Long-term use raises concerns about mental health, addiction, and dependence.
