Petrochemicals: a time of change
and opportunity
The petrochemical industry is struggling with the challenge of over-supply, but its long-term
prospects are positive. The main driving factor is the shift towards sustainability, which carries
costs but also creates opportunities.

By James Chater
[ Petrochemicals ]
Outlook
Growth has been slowing in the
petrochemicals industry. The outlook
is mixed, with the Chinese economy
faltering, Europe heading for recession
and the USA more buoyant. Higher oil
prices and geopolitical instability have
not helped.
Yet chemicals and petrochemicals
are not going anywhere: they are
an integral part of our lives, serving
both end users in household goods
and a wide range of businesses: auto,
hydrogen, semiconductors etc. Demand
in years to come is expected to grow.
Petrochemicals are set to account for
over a third of the growth in oil demand
to 2030 and nearly half to 2050 (1).

Sustainability becomes a driver

for chemical plant construction
These are the birth pangs of a new economy: the increasing demand for chemical products
is bringing growth to the industry, which at the same time has to cope with the necessary
transformation towards climate neutrality. For chemical plant construction, both of these
factors mean a lot of work in the coming years; in addition to enormous challenges, huge
opportunities await.

The stringent conditions under which FPSOs are operated

equipment, and as such, poor maintenance and servicing
by end users can lead to issues for the operator. “We focus
on building good relationships with our customers and end

our customers are getting the most out of their QOC’s and

In the offshore environment, weight is an important
factor, and the weight of closures can be high, depending
on the design, continues Ms Cononolly. “At the design

The superior corrosion resistance and strength of duplex

material is required to achieve the same level of strength
and safety, offering significant weight and space savings.
Seamless BA Stick Tube
Fail-safe design 6.35 mm (1/4")to 38.1 mm (1.5")
In addition to minimising weight and space, reliability and outside diameter
safety are key factors for QOC, and the BandlockTM2 QOC
has a raft of safety measures. The internal locking band Seamless Long Coil tube
mechanism, which gives the range its name, is a duplex 6.35 mm (1/4")to 38.1 mm (1.5")
stainless steel conical thrust ring fitted between the outside diameter
door and hub, transmitting the pressure load uniformly Length of a single roll ≤900 m
around the full 360° circumference of the hub. This means
that if the QOC is to be over-pressurised, the locking
band will hold the QOC door closed, and all locking
elements will remain in place. This is an advantage over
other types of closures (bayonet, clamp (yoke), threaded,
T-bolt) when the locking elements are in shear and are
not in 360-degree contact, which can lead to failure if the
closure is over-pressurised. The design also allows for 60 Austenitic Stainless Steel

elements of the QOC are in compression, meaning that
any pressure applied to the QOC would not allow for the
closure to be operated and opened. The self-energising

further safety feature.

The role of stainless steel in the petroleum
refining industry
Petroleum refineries convert crude oil into many products and support the manufacture and
development of essential products for various industries. The equipment in these facilities
faces significant corrosion challenges both during processing operations and in the
handling and storage of products. While the most common refined products are motor fuel
and gasoline, refined crude oil has many uses, including heating, electricity generation,
chemical feedstock, and building blocks for plastics.

The role of stainless steel

The presence of at least 10.5% Cr in
stainless steel creates a passive layer
of chromium oxide, providing effective
corrosion resistance. The other alloying
elements in stainless steel improve
corrosion resistance in other mediums,
such as in marine environments, which
are of concern in the oil and gas industry.
In the refining process, oil extraction is
done through high-pressure tubing and
then collected in a separator vessel.
Extracted crude oil is then transported
via pipeline. The whole process is
quite challenging; hence, high-grade
material is important for equipment and
machinery to enhance sustainability.

Finland moves to the forefront of Nordic

materials research
The first plasma-FIB scanning electron microscope in Finland recently became operational
at VTT in Espoo, Finland. The investment will significantly contribute to materials research
for applications such as hydrogen economy, microelectronics, and the marine industry, as
well as to material damage investigation.
