 Preface
Since its inception, The Hindu Temple and Cultural Society of USA, Inc. (HTCS) has been focusing
on numerous community services including a variety of language programs. Several Indian languages are
being taught in The Sri Venkateswara Vidyalaya at The Sri Venkateswara Temple, Bridgewater, New
Jersey, USA. These languages include Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Sanskrit, Tamil, and
Telugu. Introductory classes are conducted at the Temple, in specially allocated rooms with modern
facilities. The courses in each language is designed to offer introductory lessons to enthusiastic children
and adults, and prepare them to read, write, and speak the language of their choice. This is a continuing
project with a lot of success!

Based on this program we have come up with numerous language related booklets. (Basics of
different Indian languages, Words search booklets, learn to speak English, and classical Indian rhymes).
These materials are easily accessible through our website (www.venkateswaratemple.org) and more are
expected to come in the future. All these publications help the community in the USA as well as across the
globe! As the international interactions increase on a daily basis, our Temple’s language programs provide
a helping hand to the younger generation. Some of our booklets also serve as a starting material to the
priests in enhancing their communication skills in English.

The education committee wishes to thank the Temple management for its continued support in this
venture. We also would like to take this opportunity to thank the participating students, and their parents, in
particular and the community in general. Our special thanks to all the volunteers who make these programs
successful over the years, and also to those involved in preparing these helpful booklets.

 Author’s note

Malayalam script (Malayāḷalipi / മലയാളലിപി) is a Brahmic script used commonly to write the

Malayalam language, which is the principal language of Kerala, India, spoken by 45 million people in the
world. Malayalam script is also widely used for writing Sanskrit texts in Kerala.

The modern Malayalam alphabet has 15 vowel letters, 42 consonant letters, and a few other
symbols. Malayalam script as it is today was modified in the middle of the 19th century when Hermann
Gundert invented the new vowel signs to distinguish them. The reformed Malayalam script came into effect
in 1971 reducing the number of glyphs required for Malayalam printing from around 1000 to around 250.
The reformed orthography is commonly called put̪ iya lipi (Malayalam: പുതിയ ലിപി) and traditional

system, paḻaya lipi (Malayalam: പഴയ ലിപി). Current print media almost entirely uses reformed

orthography.

“Malayalam words search” is a learning cum fun type exercise book designed for kids for learning
Malayalam. Student is first introduced to Malayalam alphabets. An attempt is also made to help them
pronounce the alphabets in Malayalam. The following pages are devoted to a special topic of interest. The
top part of each page contain a 10x10 grid with Malayalam letters distributed at random. Words in
Malayalam, the corresponding transliteration scheme and meaning of same word in English are listed at the
bottom of each page. These words are related to the chosen topic and are hidden in the randomly
distributed letters in the respective grids. A word may be searched horizontally or diagonally (left to right) or
vertically downwards. A letter may be shared between one or many words.

The team of volunteers solely responsible for producing this amazing collection in various languages did an
outstanding job as is evident by browsing through them. The purposeful, tireless, and patient leadership and co-

I was amazed by the innovative effort to introduce Tamil language to children of USA about three decades back
by Dr. A.R. Srinivasan, NJ through his brainchild “Tamil word search booklet”, who in addition to his
professional responsibilities, took up and continues teaching Tamil language as a hobby to interested children
by conventional and non-conventional techniques. When he approached me to come out with a similar booklet
in Sanskrit, I, with a mixed feeling of delight and a bit of my own apprehensions, agreed and took up only to
find it a pleasure to do so. Now, I find similar booklets being prepared in many other Indian languages too,
thanks to the passion of Dr. Srinivasan. This is an interesting learning process for me to make such a booklet in
Sanskrit. I am sure this collective effort of making booklets in various Indian languages by word search method
will serve as a fun filled stepping stone to many who wish to learn these languages. I am indebted to Dr.
Srinivasan for making me a part of this noble community service effort by him.

I find this to be a very comprehensive work, it is easy to understand and very meticulously compiled such that
even a complete novice would be able to learn the basics of the language with minimal effort. I find that the
topics picked out in the booklet along with the initial grammatical components are well thought of and coherent.

Wonderful booklets. Our beloved Thirumangai Azhwar says in his Divya Prabandham “Sen thirantha
thamizhoasai vada sollahith thisai naangu maaith Thingal NYaayiRaagi”: செந்திறந்த தமிழ ோசெ வட செோல்
லோகித் திசெ நோன்கு மோய்த் திங்கள் ஞோயிறோகி it shows how he loved the languages. “A: அ” “U: உ” “M: ம்”
are key letters in Tamil: OM ஓம் is derived from these letters. I am sure this book series surely help to learn
our divine languages: both Tamil & Sanskrit and guide everyone closer or nearer to the god. I haven’t seen this
kind of booklet from my school days to till date. Let Shri Annanperumal & Shri Hayagrivar shower their

The purpose of this booklet is to offer a vocabulary aid for beginning learners of Gujarati. It starts with
introducing the alphabet and then offers a set of words on a page for a particular theme. A number of
interesting themes are selected which help with day-to-day activities as well as topics of general curiosity. Each
page presents a grid of Gujarati syllabic characters randomly arranged. The grid is a fun way to string the
syllables to form words related to the theme of the page. Such a word search book can help young kids or adult
learners alike. I wish I had such a fun activity book when I was teaching my son Gujarati. The concept of such
a book was articulated by Dr. A.R. Srinivasan of NJ for a Tamil booklet and I am paralleling his model for
Gujarati and hope that students of all ages will find it useful.

This series of Word Search Booklets has been a valuable guide to me in learning Tamil and other languages.

I am really so surprised to see Dr. Ganesan's very sincere and hard work with lot of efforts. Dr. Ganesan has
collected 36 groups in Part I covering all the fields. Even he has found suitable words for many modern words
in many groups like games etc. In part II also the solutions are given which will be very interesting for the
beginners as well as students.
I like the Sanskrit words for the Tamil months which would be useful for anybody. The booklet looks like a
small reference book for learners. My sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Ganesan for this wonderful

It is a well compiled and composed work which is useful for somebody who have either no knowledge or very
little working knowledge of Sanskrit. Quite a few similar compilations are already there in public. If you want
to make yours stand out better than others you must do something little bit more creative. May be you can use
some graphics interface and use mouse etc. and come up with interactive reader for Sanskrit words. I wish your
fried good luck and appreciate his enthusiasm and passion for developing this template.

The Tamil compilation is a very innovative way of presenting the life around us in the form of groups of Tamil
words and solution crosses. The immaculately well-presented items reveal the insight that Dr. A.R. Srinivasan,
the scientist in him has brought forth to generate interest in the Tamil speaking community in the USA who
perhaps have had varying opportunities of enjoying the linguistic and cultural flavours. The section titles, that
have emerged surrounding cultural, human body, activities and habitats surrounding our lives, application of
language to communicate on daily life, measurements, groceries, creating the right ambience for the language
seeking people from India, who otherwise have predominantly been surrounded by the native US ambience, are
a thoroughly refreshing measure I note. In teaching and familiarizing languages, it is said that to delve and
apply is the inspiring teacher and this note goes on to show the path in just this way. I am confident that this
booklet will increase both the passion curiosity as well as the urge to seek spare time to investigative the various
aspects of our culture in their own time by each reader, who otherwise is absolutely busy in the professional and

Delighted to read the Sanskrit booklet. The thought itself is very divine. The booklet has evolved quite
scientifically I note. It is indeed wonderful that the cultural society at Sri Venkateswara Temple, Bridgewater is
taking earnest interest in facilitating cultural familiarity amongst the people from India who are settled in the
USA and have very correctly perceived a liking for getting more familiar with the linguistic, religious and
cultural practices in the community. This Sanskrit booklet I note, is a step in this direction. It has evolved well
starting with word, diction and elementary calendar and familiar family relationships. It will be great to keep in
mind that the ‘Devabhasha’ that Sanskrit or ‘Samskrutam’ as it is known, was handed down by word-of-mouth
for generations. Just as in music-learning, in traditional Sanskrit-learning too, the practice and familiarizing go
hand-in-hand. The Sanskrit language has words that have travelled and intermingled in languages like German
and also amongst certain oriental languages. Sanskrit grammar is unique as it has singular, dual and plural
number counts and the meaning of the words are often linked to the ‘gender of the context’ or the number count
(singular, dual, plural) of the word in use. It will be fun, no doubt, to go through the booklet. My best wishes for
an absorbing journey.

Thank you for sending us a copy of ‘Malayalam Word Search’. Both of us went through it and we are delighted
that the author has created such a fun tool for learning Malayalam. It will be a great start for anyone, a child or
an adult interested in learning Malayalam. We both find it as a useful reference material on our desk even
though we had our early education in Malayalam.
Originally, the word Malayalam was the name of the land of Kerala reflecting the fact that it lies between the
‘mala’ (Western Ghats) and the ‘aazhi’ (Arabian sea); however, the language of the land acquired that name
afterwards. Malayalam belongs to the family of Dravidian languages and is believed to have evolved from
medieval Tamil under the strong influence of Sanskrit. Now, Malayalam is one of the most advanced languages
of India with a very rich literature.
In contrast to English which has only five vowels and 21 consonants, Malayalam has 15 vowels and 42
consonants reflecting the complexity of the language. In view of this fact, the author has taken a very systematic
approach in arranging the lessons starting from alphabets to commonly used words relevant to daily life. We
congratulate the author for providing a good pathway for learning the Malayalam language.
