Homework 5: Force Part II Due Fri. Mar.

15
#1

Jimmie, whose mass is 90 kg, is in an elevator descending (v = –12.5 m/s). The elevator takes 4s
to brake to a stop.

Draw a free body diagram for the situation. Neatness counts.

Find Jimmie’s acceleration (sign matters).

Calculate Jimmie’s apparent weight while the elevator is slowing down.

#2

A 20 g frog is sitting at rest on a level log.

How large is the normal force on the frog?

Suppose the log is now tilted to 32° above the horizontal, but the frog remains at
rest because of friction. What now is the normal force on the frog?

The frog begins to slip down the incline when the angle is 44° above the
horizontal (or more). Find the coefficient of static friction between frog and log.
#3

Tom and Jerry are fighting over a block of cheese (m = 1.0 kg). The cheese slides to the right at
constant speed if Tom pulls to the right with 40 N and Jerry pulls to the left with 30 N. What is
the coefficient of kinetic friction between the cheese and floor?

#4

Three boxes are connected as shown. There’s no friction

10 kg
7 kg 3 kg

F = 12 N

a. What’s the total acceleration of the system?

b. Find the tension in both of the internal ropes.

#5

Jimmie (m = 90 kg) has a jet-powered ice skates and takes off across level ice. The skates have a
thrust of 400 N and the coefficient of friction between blades and ice is 0.10. Unfortunately,
Jimmie runs out of fuel in 10 s.

a. Draw a free body diagram for Jimmie while he still has fuel.

b. What is his acceleration?

c. What is his top speed?

d. How far has he travelled in this first 10 s?

e. Draw a free body diagram for Jimmie after he has run out of fuel.

f. After he runs out of fuel, what will Jimmie’s acceleration be?

g. After he runs out of fuel, how much time passes before he comes to a stop?

h. How far does Jimmie travel without fuel before coming to a stop?

i. How far has Jimmie travelled in total?
