Coronavirus disease or COVID19 is an infectious disease that is transmitted through droplets
from coughs, sneezes, etc. which directly affects the respiratory system of an infected person.
The virus has caused a global pandemic causing lockdowns in almost all countries which meant
that schools were closed. The academic system has leaned towards online learning platforms to
continue education. However, a number of problems aroused from such action as learners do not
have the same access to technology and other resources such as Internet connectivity and an
alarming number of suicides leading to students’ appeal for CHED to suspend or cancel the
academic calendar or put in Academic Freeze.
With the extensive spread of COVID-19, conducted through expensive tests and no vaccine,
learning should not be suspended because development is not a downward spiral. In such face of
great difficulty, there is an importance and emphasis to a forward thinking mentality, resilience,
and the capacity to thrive under unfortunate circumstances. Learning is a continuous process and
one’s ability to acquire it under such difficult times is a sign of resilience and competitiveness.
Learning allows students to feel a sense of normalcy under great adversity as it gives a sense of
routine or organization that they are used to. Suspending the academic calendar would cause
possible learning gaps and even development gaps because life did not pause when COVID-19
spread and it will never pause for as long as there are people living in it. Most parents did not
stopped working when the pandemic worsen, they found ways on how to cope and continue
providing for their families which is a great testament as to why learning should continue.
There is a great possibility and belief that every person or student pursuing their dreams in
various ways today, one may be attending classes conducted online, is able to develop the value
of resilience. The pandemic and online classes that is both going on today allows people and
learners to develop values integration. While online classes may be an opportunity to others, it is
an endeavour to some. However, it has allowed learners to develop their independence as
learning has become self-paced. Education has become an opportunity for every person to know
more about herself/himself and her/his capacity to use time.
Continuation of classes allows integral education to go on and educators to not lose their jobs.
