Resume Workbook

This workbook is designed to help create a new resume or improve an existing resume. Each section will
guide you through the Resume Roadmap to accomplish the following:

Sequence your resume in a recommended order


Craft bullets that highlight your experience and quantify impact
Format your resume so it is easy and accessible to read
Customize your resume to each job

Helpful Reminders:

Your resume is an introduction to a company to help secure an interview.


Your resume should be easy for recruiters to read and digest.
Resume writing is an iterative process–update it regularly.
Your resume tells YOUR unique story!

STEP 1: START & FILL OUT

1. If you don’t currently have a resume, search for a template through Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or
online.

2. Edit your resume to include the following sections in order:

Contact Information
Education

Experience & Projects
Leadership & Activities
Honors & Awards

2. Ensure each section contains the following information:

STEP 2: IMPROVE

A strong resume is clear, specific, includes quantifiable impact, and organized. Bullets should highlight
your experience, knowledge, and skills. Crafting bullets can be challenging, but the methods below help
make it easier:

Laszlo Bock’s Formula: “Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]”

Example:
● Improved connectivity for our target user group by 30% by building a node JS applet to bridge
common connection gaps

1. Using Laszlo’s Formula, draft 2-3 bullets for your Experience section.

The STAR Method (SItuation, Task, Action, Results)

STEP 3: FORMAT & CUSTOMIZE

Formatting Tips:
Keep your resume to one page
Use bullet points instead of long sentences or paragraphs
Use action verbs to start each bullet point
Avoid pronouns (I, we) and minimize the use of articles (a, an, the)

Use consistent font styles and sizes (10-12pt) throughout your resume
Resolve all grammatical and spelling errors
Information should be presented in chronological order
Utilize bold and italics to distinguish sections and important information
All dates include the month AND year
Save your final resume as a PDF

Customizing Your Resume to a Specific Job


1. Review a job description carefully and keep an eye out for key attributes or skills in the
qualifications like “Java” or “working in teams”
2. If needed, edit your resume to ensure your resume highlights the key attributes or skills for the
minimum qualifications (preferred qualifications too, if you have them!)
3. Share your resume with a peer or advisor for feedback–do they see a correlation between the job
description and your resume?
