Before/Pre-Lesson Proper

Good morning/afternoon, class! Are you excited for our game today?
Today, we will have a guessing game.

Learners, your task now is to guess the object being describe.

- It is a 3-D in shape
- It has 12 edges
- It has 8 vertices
- It has 6 faces or made up
of 6 square sides
- It can be a toy or a model
object

Activating Prior What it is? _____________________________________________

Knowledge
(5 minutes)

Expected answer: It is a rubix’s cube.

NOTE TO THE TEACHER: This activity will be an introduction for the grade 8 competency on
multiplying binomials using special products particularly cube of a binomial.

1
LESSON SCRIPT IN MATHEMATICS 8

From our previous topic starting day 1 until day 3 we were solving on
binomials and guessing activities on rubix’s cube. Now, let as connect
Lesson these two activities to our topic. Now, let us explore more about cube of
Purpose/Intention binomial.
(1 minute)
NOTES TO THE TEACHER: This part of the lesson introduces the competency to be mastered which
is multiplying binomials using special product particularly cube of binomial.

Before we start our activity, let us recall the meaning of the following
terms.
1. Volume of a cube = 𝒂 ∙ 𝒂 ∙ 𝒂 = a3
Lesson Language 2. Formula for cube of binimoal:
Practice Cube of Binomial of the form → (x + y)3 = x3 + 3x2y + 3xy2 + y3
(1 minute) Cube of Binomial of the form → (x - y)3 = x3 - 3x2y + 3xy2 - y3

NOTES TO THE TEACHER: This part introduces the key terms to be used in the lesson or terms that
are new in the lesson.
During/Lesson Proper
This time, we are going to connect the idea of a volume of a cube in getting
the product of cube of a binomial.

Formula for the Volume of a cube:

Volume of a cube = 𝒂 ∙ 𝒂 ∙ 𝒂 = a3, where we can represent the side of a
cube as Binomial.

Now, if you are asked to solve for the cube of binomial given the binomial to
Reading the Key
be (x + a), you can try to solve using the following process below:
Idea/Stem
(𝑥 + 𝑎)1 (𝑥 + 𝑎)1 (𝑥 + 𝑎)1 or (𝑥 + 𝑎)3 , where the exponents is added
to represent the power of the binomial as 3.

Next, let us try to multiply the binomial manually using our previews
knowledge on special product on square of binomial by multiply first the
two binomials.

Solution:
Note that we assign each binomial as 1st, 2nd and 3rd as described below
1st 2nd 3rd
(𝑥 + 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦)
Next, we will multiply
(𝑥 + 𝑦)(𝑥 + 𝑦) = x2 + 2xy + y2 the product by the third
= (x2 + 2xy + y2) (x +y) binomial then the
= x3 + x2y + 2x2y + 2xy2 + xy2 + y3 product use distributive
= x3 + 3x2y + 3xy2 + y3 property.

Follow-up questions.
Questions:
1. What pattern can you observe in your final answer?
_________________________________________________________________________
2. Can you describe each pattern on the final answer with respect to given
binomial.
a. To obtain the first term of the final answer you need to find the cube
of the first term of the given binomial.
b. To obtain the second term of the final answer you need to
_____________________________________________________________________.
c. To obtain the third term of the final answer you need to
_____________________________________________________________________.
d. To obtain the fourth term of the final answer you need to
_____________________________________________________________________.

Expected Answer:
1. Students’ answer may vary.
2. Can you describe each pattern on the final answer with respect to given
binomial.
a. To obtain the first term of the final answer you need to find the cube
of the first term of the gin binomial.
b. To obtain the second term of the final answer you need to
find the product of the square of the first term and second term and
multiply by 3.
c. To obtain the third term of the final answer you need to find the
product of the first term and square of the second term and multiply
by 3.
d. To obtain the fourth term of the final answer you need to find the
cube of the second term of the gin binomial.

NOTES TO THE TEACHER: Teacher will connect the idea on getting the volume of a cube and cube
of binomial. Then, the teacher will show how to solve manually that will let the students conclude the
pattern or techniques to solve cube of binomial.
This time we will solve the cube of binomial using the pattern/formula.

To Find the Cube of Binomial of the form → (x + y)3

Note that x is the first term and y is the second term.

Step 1. Find the cube of the first term. (x)3 = x3

Step 2. Find product of the square of the first term and the second
term then multiply by 3. (x)2(y)(3) = 3x2y = 3x2y
Developing
Understanding of the
Key Idea/Stem
Step 3. Find product of the first term and the square of the second
term then multiply by 3. (x)(y)2(3) = 3xy2 = 3xy2
10 minutes
Step 4. Find the cube of the second term. (y)3 = y3

Thus, (x + y)3 = x3 + 3x2y + 3xy2 + y3 is the final answer.

3
LESSON SCRIPT IN MATHEMATICS 8

To Find the Cube of Binomial of the form → (x - y)3

(Note that x is the first term and y is the second term.)

Step 1. Find the cube of the first term. (x)3 = x3

Step 2. Find product of the square of the first term and the second
term then multiply by 3. (x)2(-y) (3) = -3x2y = –3x2y

Step 3. Find product of the first term and the square of the second
term then multiply by 3. (x) (–y)2(3) = 3xy2 = 3xy2

Step 4. Find the cube of the second term. (–y)3 = –y3

Thus, (x – y)3 = x3 – 3x2y + 3xy2 – y3 is the final answer.

Reminder: If you find the product of Difference of Binomial Cube the final
answer has alternate signs of every term as positive, negative, positive and
negative.

Let us now go to an individual task for you to work on.

Now, let’s take a more challenging expression.

Example: 1. Expand the given expression algebraically

(3𝑥 + 8)3 = 1st Term + 2nd Term +3rd Term + 4th Term

Let’s take steps:

1st Term: Cube the first term : (3𝑥)3 = 33𝑥 3 = 27𝑥 3

2nd Term: Three times the product of the square of the first term and
second term: 3(3𝑥 )2(8) = 3(32 𝑥 2)(8) = 3(9𝑥2)(8) = 216𝑥 2

3rd Term: Three times the product of the first term and the square of the
second term: 3(3x)(8)2 =3(3𝑥 2)(8)2 =3(3𝑥 2)(64) = 576x

4th term: Cube the second term : (8)3 = 512

Final Answer: (3𝑥 + 8)3 = 27x3 + 216x2 + 576x + 512

Learners, do you have any questions regarding the solution presented. If

there is none then it is your turn now to try answering the product of cube
