Pre-Calculus Unit 3 Lab

Matrices and Cramer’s Rule

CALCULATOR IS ALLOWED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.

Show all of your work, even though the question may not explicitly remind you to
do so. Clearly label any functions, graphs, tables, or other objects that you use.
Justifications require that you give mathematical reasons, and that you verify the
needed conditions under which relevant theorems, properties, definitions, or tests
are applied. Your work will be scored on the correctness and completeness of
your methods as well as your answers. Answers without supporting work or
explanation will not receive credit. Work should be handwritten only.

In this assignment we will explore representing and solving systems of equations

using matrices.A matrix is an array of numbers, arranged in rows and columns that
can be used to represent equations. Matrices are named by their number of rows
and columns. For Example, matrices A and B below are both 2 x 3, since they
have 2 rows and 3 columns:

A= B=

Determinants

The determinant of a matrix is often used when solving systems, and in

other applications of matrices. It is found by finding the product of the
elements along the diagonal from left to right, then subtracting the product
of the elements along the diagonal from right to left.

For example, the determinant for a 2x2 matrix is 𝑎𝑑 − 𝑏𝑐.

1) Find the determinant for the matrix below. (10 points)

(2*4) - (7*-3) = 29

Represent Systems of Linear Equations with Matrices

You can represent a system of equations with a matrix, using the

coefficients as elements of a matrix, the variables as another matrix, and
the constants as a matrix on the other side of the equation.

To represent the system below in matrix form we would have:

Cramer’s Rule

You can solve the system using Cramer’s Rule, using determinants.

The solution to the system of equations

can be found in the following way, using Cramer’s Rule:

|𝑐 𝑏 𝑓 𝑒| |𝑎 𝑐 𝑑 𝑓|
𝑥= |𝑎 𝑏 𝑑 𝑒|
and 𝑦 = |𝑎 𝑏 𝑑 𝑒|

The solution is the quotient of the determinant of the system, replacing the
elements in the left column with those of the constants in the numerator for
x, and replacing the elements in the right column with those of the
constants in the numerator for y.

So, the solution to the system is:

|10 −1 −20 3 | (10)(3)−(−1)(−20) 30−20

𝑥= |2 −1 4 3 |
= (2)(3)−(−1)(4)
= 10
=1

|2 10 4 −20 | (2)(−20)−(10)(4) −40−40

𝑦 = |2 −1 4 3 |
= (2)(3)−(−1)(4)
= 10
=− 8

We can verify this solution algebraically, by substituting in the values for x

and y into the system:

→ 2(1) − (− 8) = 10 4(1) + 3(− 8) =− 20

We can also verify graphically, by graphing each equation

and finding the point of intersection:

Your Turn

Answer the following questions using the system:

2) Write matrices to represent the system: (10 points)

--- --- --- --- --- ---
| X | | 5 3 | | -7 |
| | | | = | |
| Y | | -6 7 | | -34 |
--- --- --- --- --- ---

3) Use Cramer’s Rule to solve the system: (10 points)

(7 * -7) - (-34 * 3) (5 * -34) - (-6 * -7)

----------------------- = 1 = x ----------------------- = -4 = y
(5 * 7) - (-6 * 3) (5 * 7) - (-6 * 3)

4) Verify your solution algebraically: (10 points)

5) Verify your solution graphically: (10 points)
