1. Make a shortlist of each of the organisations at
which you would consider volunteering. This list
will consist of a subset of the organisations in
your booklet – approximately three to ten
organisations. Put the organisation at which you
would most like to volunteer at the top of the
list. You are also welcome to add organisations
(perhaps organisations in a neighbouring
community) to your shortlist, in other words,
those that you did not include in the booklet. In
most cases, students find that they end up
volunteering at one of the organisations
mentioned in their booklet, but we do not want to
limit you – you can include any community
organisation (excluding commercial enterprises)
in your shortlist of organisations at which you
would like to volunteer.

The list below of the two organisations is according

to my most likely volunteering organisation (Please
take note it is based on participation I took).

Badisa

1. What the organisation does.

It is value is driven by Jesus Christ as role
model. In collaboration with congregations and
other role players. Badisa, as a non-profit
organisation provides excellent, professional,
expert and support services to people and
communities in need. It establishes development
programmes, striving to enable consumers/clients
the opportunity to function optimally.
2. My reason for approaching this organisation
I first approach this organisation due to my
first two motivation list that is Religion and
Values (present in assignment 1). I like the fact
that its operation was solely on religion and
helping people in need. I felt that it would be
an appropriate fit as it follows the same beliefs
and value that I had. Where I can grow and
experience new skills and what opportunities it
had to offer. It would give opportunity where I
can transfer and truly participate in helping
others in needs. To gain experience on how
professionals address community problems. In
doing so to establish what skills is needed and
what to see if my current motivations are enough
to accomplish my future goals or achievements.

3. What happened with my engagement with them

I felt scared and felt emotions that I should
quit. That the people would not understand my
viewpoint and what I was willing to offer. I was
afraid that they would misunderstand my
meaning when communicating what I was trying to
say and seek. However, being overwhelmed and
only selective listening occurred for me
personally. They understood and was willing to
assist. They spoke softly and ask a few questions
regarding what I like and how I feel about
helping the community. I did notice when
finishing my sentences that it was not my whole
message how I would like to portray but on the
other hand could not focus on it as they would
see that I was reforming my words and did not
spoke it with confidence. They understood and
tried. They did not have any volunteer positions
available but did understand my circumstances.
4. Refection on working relationship

Goals
Due to the fact I was limited to only
administration task, I was overwhelmed in doing
something more. They praised me for doing
excellent work, but I was not truly satisfied.
They did saw that I was slightly dissatisfied
with performance tasks, but I did also
acknowledge that they are a professional entity,
that certain requirement is need when rendering
their services. I wanted to give more but only
focused on my immediate tasks and what was
available in the current moment. That they would
see my potential that I was goal driven and can
complete set task in the required timeframe.
Temptation did arise when opportunity came my
way, example where the clients preferred in
asking them if they could address my problem with
me since we were the same ethnic group. I felt
that there was a change if persuading this course
of work, as there is a need for my assistance in
future or accomplishments. Thus, completing
administration task was satisfactory since it
would keep me at the organisation for observing
how they operate. While focussing on my current
work, they appreciate my new ideas for programmes
with the community. As acknowledge privately for
my efforts but publicly the organisation was
praised when doing my programme for the
community. Since I was somewhat part of the
organisation and they got satisfactory
participation from community in attending, it
felt less that I was ignored and the fact that I
cannot do what I truly want, to be physically
involve in interaction with people in need.
Tasks
My administration was broadened from just being
in the office. I later attend meeting with
stakeholders when organisation was needed to
represent themselves. They would ask for my input
in what I was thinking and what I think would
help assisting the community better. I later went
on behalf the organisation in taking minutes.
Even though I could not measure up with the
stakeholder, I was happy to gain experience who
was involved in the community, what they were
thinking and how their ideas assist in developing
the community. It gave me a sense of how they see
the world and how their minds work. What
obligation they have, what limits them and what
solutions there is to these problems.

Bonds
At the ending phase I felt the strongest
connection. I measure this because I could speak
more openly with ideas and see the
acknowledgement in everything I say and do. We
became like a family; I could broaden my wings to
speak off. I attended every organisation meeting
and was responsible for ensuring that the
programme was successful (example goals, budget,
and equipment, stationary). At this stage less
supervision was imposing when doing my tasks.
Through acknowledgement and feeling appreciated,
I was not truly satisfied, I was not physically
involved in helping others. It some way I felt
dissatisfied in wanting to do something that was
my solely my responsibility. I did get that from
the organisation in being responsible, but I
needed something more that the recognition was
only mine, not to be praised privately but also
in public. That I could say this happened because
of me and everyone knows it.
Department of Social Development (Substance Abuse
Project)

1. What the organisation does.

The awareness of negative effects of substance
abuse. Those who need treatment, aftercare, and
support to access it by early intervention,
treatment and reintegrate after-care support.
Facilitate diversion programmes with Social Crime
Prevention Unit as a means of intervention
with the youth at risk.

3. My reason for approaching this organisation

After being exposed to my first experience I felt
that this organisation would give me more and
not limit me to administration duties. That it
would give me more opportunity to explore and be
physically involved as I strive to be. I also
believed that this department would broaden
my horizon as it focuses more than what I was
aiming for. There are various components that
it concentrates on and with how to help assisting
the community. That being part of this
organisation would give me more opportunity to
explore and being expose, than Badisa could have.

4. What happened with my engagement with them.

I was not that much nervous as I could remember
how I felt and what I experience during my
first encounter. I was amazed that how they
perceived me. They also spoke with dignity and
soft with understanding. Thoughts in my mind
suggested they learned how to question people
and to respond to answers, as their tone in voice
was similar, and professional. They liked me
being enthusiastic and very talkative and
mentioned that I remind them of their colleague
that is currently with them, and need more people
like them. The stated that they would love if I
were part of their team, but their focus was on
Substance Abuse related matters. Even though I
was not familiar with the concept I was eager to
participate as I would gain more than my previous
volunteering experience. I would personally be
present when superior/supervisor/social worker
would interview substance abuse individuals. My
task would be observation and writing reports
regarding the client. Although it was still part
of administration but at least I was physically
involved in the effected individual, to speak
off. If the outcome would mean I need to be
physical involve, that was enough for me.

5. Refection on working relationship

Goals
I was required to write a certain amount of
reports per month on selected individuals. I had
good human relationship and management skills. I
could plan public relations activities, think
independently and work under pressure. Can work
integrated with people of different beliefs
and values. Excellent report writing, planning,
administrative skills (example I develop a data
base that is currently still used after I left,
by the organisation).

Tasks
My tasks expanded as they could see I was
reliable, trustworthy and Goal driven. I later
conducted home based supervision to discharge
clients of substance abuse alone. Connect
discharge clients with a support group in their
communities. I felt much appreciated and sense of
recognition when I had to compile/ writing
submission for workshops, training, and diversion
camp programmes without supervision. Later they
stated that they like my performance in
everything I do and ask me if I was willing to
assist in other sections besides only substance
abuse related matters. I gladly accept the offer.
I assist in Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Section (administrational task, going out and
evaluating requirements for centres). I also
assist in Children & Family section; Crime
Prevention; Older persons and Community
Development Practitioners section.

Bonds
Prior to departure the organisation and the
members, they felt like family. I was invited to
every social gathering and was acknowledge as if
I was part of the professional board of the
organisation. They valued my input in everything
I do. They gave recognition to me when it was
needed. What truly made me appreciated in my
workplace is that when recognition was given, no
one took credit, not my supervisor but only me.
This is where my passion was truly being inspired
to strive in helping others.
