UNIVERSITY OF ZIMABWE

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

ELECTROMAGNETICS

EE308

LECTURER: DR. P MANYERE

NOV-DEC 2020

Purpose of the Course:

1. To produce a graduate with a BSc (Hon) Degree in Electrical Engineering,

who is competent in applying specialized knowledge and research
methodology in the Electrical environment thus, contributing to the research
and development of the Engineering environment and the community. The
qualified student will be able to adapt to any changes or new developments in
the Electrical Engineering environment. This course is designed as a service
course for most of the electrical engineering options including Microwave
Engineering and Telecommunications. Students who study this course are
expected to have passed Advanced Electrical Principles and Engineering
Mathematics.

Aims

2. The aim of this course is:

a. To review vector algebra and the application to electromagnetic fields.

b. To introduce students to the principles of Static Magnetic Fields.

c. To introduce to students Time-Varying Fields and the Maxwell’s

equations.

d. To introduce the Plane Wave Propagation and Wave Polarization.

e. To introduce to students, different types of antennas and their

radiation patterns.

1
f. To introduce the transmission lines, their equations and
characteristics.

g. To enable students to carry out experiments and understand practical

applications of electromagnetic theory.

Objectives

3. On completion of this course:

a. Students will be equipped with the theory of electromagnetics.

b. Students will have knowledge of static magnetic fields, time-varying

fields and the Maxwell’s equations.

c. The students will understand Plane Waves, their Propagation and

Polarization.

d. Students will have thorough knowledge of Antennas and how they

radiate electromagnetic waves.

e. They will have thorough knowledge of the transmission line equations

and their characteristics.

e. Students will be able to carry out experiments in the laboratory to

measure electromagnetic wave parameters and observe behavior of
electromagnetic signals and systems.

Assumptions

4. It is assumed that students have good knowledge of Mathematics especially

Vector analysis, Differential equations, Integrals, and Matrices. It is also
assumed that students passed and have knowledge of Advanced Electrical
Principles.
