INTRODUCTION

Past-Present-Future layouts are popular across just about

every card method out there, from Tarot to Oracle cards, to
Lenormand.

The most popular PPF layout is a simple three-card spread

where the card on the left represents the past, the middle
card represents the present, and the right card the future.

PAST PRESENT FUTURE

You can use this simple three-card line to interpret a PPF in

Lenormand or in other ways.

But because Lenormand’s cards make most sense when

read in combinations, one card is not very helpful for each
time-period.

INTRODUCTION

That’s why PPF readings are a little different with

Lenormand.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to read the PPF in the Portrait,
the Grand Tableau, and using my own layout.

NINE-CARD
PORTRAIT
The nine-card Portrait is one of the most popular
Lenormand layouts. It has just 9 cards, but the fact that
they’re laid out in a 3x3 grid means that we can read 3
columns, 3 rows, and 2 diagonals.

Plus, there are many other ways we can combine

non-adjacent cards in the Portrait to dig out a whole lot of
details out of this amazing spread.

The techniques used in the Portrait can also be used in the

Grand Tableau and are key to reading cards in
Tableau-style. That’s why it is considered a master spread.

It’s very easy to read the PPF in a Portrait:

➤ The left column represents the past

➤ The middle column represents the present, and
➤ The right column represents the future

So there are three cards for each of the past, present, future.

PAST PRESENT FUTURE

What you might find a bit tricky, is how you read the rows
and diagonals given that some of their cards are part of the
past and present columns. But that’s up to you. Personally, I
prefer not to read the PPF out of a Portrait.

My preference is to read the Portrait - and indeed, any layout

- in the context of the timeline that I’ve set for it.

For example, if the issue I’m asking about is set entirely in
the future, then all the lines in the Portrait are about that
future timeline.

GRAND TABLEAU
The Grand Tableau is a large and complex spread that uses
all 36 Lenormand cards. It comes in two versions: The Piquet
Tableau and the Grand Tableau of Nines.

A key to reading the Grand Tableau is to locate the

significator. The significator is either the Man or Woman
card. We choose the one that represents the readee and
locate it in the Tableau.

The cards closest to the significator, and the rows, columns,

and diagonals where it appears, are the most important
lines to read.

To read the PPF in a Tableau, we locate the significator’s

column. It represents the present. All the columns to its left
are about the past, and all the columns to its right are about
the future.

GRAND TABLEAU
You might wonder what happens if the significator appears
in the last column to the right. Great question!

Typically, the reading is invalidated and the cards are

shuffled and drawn again.

And what if the significator appears in the column before

the last one on the right?

Well, we can’t be too quick to invalidate the reading in this

case. We should examine the cards and think about why
there is such a strong focus on the past. Perhaps the readee
is carrying a lot of baggage from the past, and it’s important
to release it before moving forward.

Do you want to read a Grand Tableau but feel intimidated by

it? Don’t be! Read more about it here.

LENORMAND
READER’S PPF
I’m not too fund of the Portrait method, where the PPF is
read in addition to the other lines. I’m more flexible about
this when it comes to the Grand Tableau. But that’s just me -
remember to do what feels right for you.

When I do a PPF reading, I prefer to focus on just that - the

past, present, and future of the situation at hand.

That’s why I like to layout the cards in a way that it is not

visually amenable to connecting them in rows and
diagonals.

PAST PRESENT FUTURE

LENORMAND
READER’S PPF
You’ll notice that the cards are not laid out in sequence. For
example, the past group is cards, 1, 4, and 7 - not cards 1, 2,
and 3.

That’s because most of the time, I like to deal out the cards
instead of fanning them out. And dealing them out out of
sequence is better for shuffling them in case there is some
bias from the previous reading.

But you might like to layout the cards differently and use a
different order to place them. It’s completely up to you.

The fun thing about this layout is that you can use these 3
groups of 3 cards to ask about anything, like:

➤ Body, mind, soul

➤ Choice 1, choice 2, choice 3
➤ Choice 1, best course of action, choice 2

...And many more.
