Calculation Sheet
1. INTRODUCTION
-The purpose of this calculation sheet is to show all the straining force acting on the Tank.
-The Tank exact dimensions are shown in details in the attached drawings.
-The Tank elements (slabs , beams , columns , walls & raft) are modeled using the (Sap 2000) program
software.

2. STRUCTURAL DESIGN CRITERIA

2.1. Codes and Standards
 Regulations to consider on this work is the following:
 ECP 201-2012 Calculation of loads and forces on structures and buildings.
 ECP 202 Soil mechanics and foundation design.
 ECP 203-2018 Design and construction of concrete structures.
 ECP 204 Design and construction of masonry works.
-The procedures of design of water structure are summarized as follow: -
Stage (i): Check of tensile stresses in concrete water cross section
Assume thickness of section (t) = ……… mm
I = (t )3 *1000/12 = ……… mm4
Y = t / 2 = ……… mm

Allowable tensile stress in reinforcement concrete (Fctr): -

Fctr = (0.60 √𝑓𝑐𝑢) N/mm2 (Eq. 4-64 in ECP 203-2018 Design Aids)

Allowable tensile stress in reinforcement concrete of water section: -

Fctr = (0.60 √𝑓𝑐𝑢) / 1 N/mm2

Where, fcu is the characteristic strength of reinforcement concrete,

 is a reduction factor to decrease the allowable tensile stress in water sections. This factor varies
with the thickness of the cross section (t), and can be taken as follow,
(Table 4-16 in ECP 203-2018 Design Aids): -

tv (mm) tv ≤ 100mm tv ≤ 200mm tv ≤ 400mm tv ≥ 600mm

1 1.0 1.2 1.3 1.4
For example, for fcu=30 N/mm2
t=20cm then, Fctr = (0.60 √30) / 1.2 = 2.738 N/mm2
t=40cm then, Fctr = (0.60 √30) / 1.3 = 2.528 N/mm2
t≥60cm then, Fctr = (0.60 √30) / 1.4 =2.347 N/mm2
Actual tensile stress in section (Fact)
For section subject to M, N

Fact = N/A ± M/Z (according to type of Normal) N/mm2 ≤ Fctr

Calculation Sheet
Stage (ii): choice of reinforcement:
Ultimate moment Mu = 1.5 * M kN.m/m’
Ultimate axial force Nu = 1.5 * N kN/ m

Thickness of the cross section (t) mm

Width of the cross section (b) mm

e = M u / Nu
es = e + t /2- cover

Mus =Nu * es

𝑓𝑦∗𝑗∗𝑑∗bcr 𝐹𝑦∗bcr
Where bcr is a reduction factor of steel yield stresses, which satisfy cracking limit conditions for
deformed high tensile steel and can be obtained from Table (4-15) in ECP 203-2018 Design Aids,
and attached with the report. Fy is the yield strength of the steel bars.

Calculation for minimum reinforcement:

* (As) min = ρmin b.d mm2

Where ρmin is obtained from the following graph:

2.2. Material Characteristics

 Materials characteristics shown below has to appear on every structural drawing.
2.2.1. Plain Concrete
- Characteristic strength fcu =18 N/mm2.
- Cement Content = 250 kg/m2.
- Cement used is Sulphate-Resistant Cement.

Calculation Sheet
2.2.2. Reinforced Concrete
- Grade of Concrete C30.
- Characteristic strength fcu = 30 N/mm2.
- Cement Content = 400 kg/m2.

2.2.3. Reinforcement Steel

- Cold twisted, high tensile deformed bars with min. f y = 360 N/mm2 according to Egyptian
Standard No. 262/1988.

2.3. Concrete Cover to Reinforcement

 According to the exposition type and depending on the existing environments, the concrete
cover is used according to the code used and specifications and general notes.

2.4. Soil Recommendations

 Allowable Net Bearing Capacity = 1.5 kg/cm2.
 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction = 1000 t/m3.

2.5. Acting Loads

 Acting Loads are shown in SAP2000 file inputs.
