4-2. Automatic exposure control inspection

Inspect the automatic exposure control by observing the images from the endoscope on the monitor
while the lamp is lit.

Caution
• If an object is left in close proximity to the distal end of the endoscope for a long time,
excessive absorption of the emitted light could cause heating of the object. To prevent
damage, do NOT leave any object near the distal end of the endoscope when it is turned on.
• Do NOT put your hand close to or hold the distal end of the endoscope while wearing dark-
colored gloves such as purple color or blue color, to avoid heating of the gloves, which could
cause a burn injury. Dark- colored (e.g. purple - or blue - colored) rubber gloves tend to absorb
heat easily.

4 Note
• If images are not being displayed on the monitor, refer to “7-1. Troubleshooting guide”
(p. 152).
Inspection

1. Tap an icon of the Exposure control on the touch panel to set to [Average] or [Peak] (Figure 4.4).

3. Place the distal end of the endoscope at a distance of approximately 1 cm from the palm of your hand
and then move it approximately 5 cm away from your palm. Watch the image displayed on the monitor
to ensure that the brightness at both distances is similar (Figure 4.6).

Figure 4.6

4. Adjust the Brightness to the desired level.

• Exposure is brighter at levels closer to “+5” and darker at levels closer to “− 5”.

Caution
In case of difficulty in examining close - up images (approximately 1 cm) of a subject because
of overly bright display of the center on the monitor despite the exposure control mode being
set to [Average] or [Peak], the automatic exposure control may NOT be working properly. Do
NOT use the endoscope when the exposure control function is NOT working correctly. In case
of exposure control NOT working optimally, move the distal end of the endoscope away from
the subject, check again that [Average] or [Peak] is selected for the Exposure control mode,
adjust the Brightness indicator to “− 5”, and bring the distal end of the endoscope at a distance
of approximately 1 cm from the palm of your hand. If the images are still too bright, replace
the endoscope with another one because the automatic exposure control may NOT be working
properly. If the images are too bright even with another endoscope, do NOT perform endoscopic
examination, and contact your local PENTAX Medical service facility.

4 4-3. Inspection of remote buttons of the endoscope and foot switch

i - scan Profile
PENTAX Medical’s three original image processing functions, surface enhancement (SE), contrast
enhancement (CE), and tone enhancement (TE), are collectively referred to as “i - scan”. The i - scan
Profile menu allows you to register SE, CE, and TE functions with the desired values as an i - scan profile
and load it to apply the image processing settings configured for the i - scan profile simultaneously.

█ Description of Each Image Processing Function

SE
This function is used for enhancing fine structures by enhancing the local light – dark contrast. It is
suitable for normal observation because the brightness and color are not changed significantly.

Setting Description
0 The SE function is turned off.
1
2
3 One of six levels is selectable.
The blue enhancement effect increases
4 in the order of [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], and [6].
5
6

CE

5
This function is used for enhancing irregularities by enhancing the blue component of areas that are
lower in luminance intensity. This function creates a contrast for the color of living mucous membranes
by adding a blue color to structures that are difficult to recognize visually with normal enhancement.
It is suitable for normal observation because the brightness and color are not changed significantly.

Setting Description

Directions for Use

0 The CE function is turned off.
1
2
3 One of six levels is selectable.
The blue enhancement effect increases
4 in the order of [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], and [6].
5
6

Note
• SE and CE are turned off after the power- on.
• If the level of CE is set high, overall images may appear to have a strong blue tinge. When
this is a problem, set a lower level.
• If the levels of SE and CE are set high, noise may become visible in the endoscopic
images. When this is a problem, set a lower level.

2023. 09    6217001    P221    R08 93

P221-R08_E_EPK-i5500c.indb 93 2023/09/14 13:30:19

TE
This function is used for improving the color contrast by significantly changing the color and brightness.
It improves the color contrast by reducing the redness of mucous membranes to enhance the
redness of blood vessels. This function is used for emphasizing the difference in the color of mucous
membranes and blood vessels to improve the visibility of blood vessels by changing the color tone of
mucous membranes to blue and green color tones through image processing. Mucous membranes
and blood vessels are represented with similar red color tones during normal observation; with similar
colors, slight differences in color are difficult to notice. Creating greater color differences makes the
colors easier to discern and thus improves visibility.
Select from among six modes: “r”, “d”, “v”, “e”, “g”, and “c”.

Note
• TE is turned off after the power- on.
• Enabling TE may result in the darkening of images. If images seem dark, adjust the
brightness, or set TE to [Off] and use the normal observation mode.
• The colors of endoscopic images captured using TE differ from those captured in the normal
observation mode. Fully understand the difference between each mode before use.
• The colors with TE may also vary depending on the observation conditions such as the
observation distance and whether or not there is staining.
