Intended use
In use of an electric scope, signals from the endoscope are converted to the image and displayed on an
inspection monitor. This processor has air/ water pump function.
Application
Observation of body cavities (Air/ Water supply through a connected endoscope and output of endoscopic

Important notice
The PENTAX Medical video processor EPK- i5500c offers endoPRO iQ function by purchasing optional key.
The endoPRO iQ communication function is used to communicate with a computer pre - installed with the
application of endoPRO iQ handled by PENTAX Medical via LAN cable.
The endoPRO iQ is not available depending on the sales region. For details, contact your local
PENTAX Medical service facility.

█ Installation
Warning
• This processor is intended for use in a medical facility. To avoid harm, do NOT use it in any
place other than a medical facility.
• This processor is a Class B medical device (standard: CISPR 11) intended for use in
hospitals or other medical facilities. It complies with the criteria of the aforementioned
Class B only when the cables and keyboard specified by PENTAX Medical are connected.
Using this processor near a radio or TV receiver in a medical facility or residential area may
cause electromagnetic interference. To reduce electromagnetic interference, keep this
processor turned off even after connecting the endoscope until you are ready to use it.
To reduce and resolve adverse electromagnetic effects, do NOT use this processor near
equipment that generates electromagnetic waves.
• Before turning on /standby switch of this processor, ensure that the air vents are NOT
blocked. Blocking ventilation may cause the equipment to heat up.
• Do NOT install this processor in a place where it could get wet. Failure to observe this
precaution may result in electric shock.
• Use a power supply compatible with the specifications of this processor. Failure to
observe this precaution may cause malfunction or unexpected accident.
• Ensure that the specifications of the power supply match the electrical ratings displayed
on the rear panel. In case of a mismatch, there is a risk of electrical failure of the unit
during a procedure. If an electrical failure of the unit occurs, endoscopic images will NOT
be displayed on the monitor, with a consequent inability to move the endoscope in the
desired direction. In addition, there is a risk of excessive bleeding due to device operation
becoming impossible during the procedure.
• Ensure that the power cord is NOT twisted, damaged, or disconnected. If the power cord
becomes disconnected during a procedure, there is a risk of excessive bleeding because
the endoscopic images can NOT be displayed on the monitor, with a consequent inability
to move the endoscope in the desired direction.
• Do NOT use this processor installed vertically. Failure to observe this precaution may
cause the processor to malfunction and eventually fail.
• Install, use, and store this processor where it will be protected from dust. If any dust
is confirmed, ensure to remove it. A certain amount of dust accumulating inside the
processor may cause it to malfunction, emit smoke, or catch fire or may cause other
problems.
Caution
• Install, configure, and start using this processor immediately after purchase. Do NOT
store the device for an extended period of time without using it.
• Do NOT use this processor where explosive or flammable gases are present or in an
oxygen - rich environment. Failure to observe this precaution may cause the processor to
catch fire.
Warning
• Check the patient’s condition before the procedure to ensure that it is appropriate to use
this processor.
• This processor employs a structure with insulated applied parts to prevent electric shock
(degree of protection against electric shock: Type BF classification for medical equipment).
Do NOT use other electrical devices being used for the patient to ground the endoscope.
Insulated gloves should be worn to prevent grounding through the user.
• In case abnormality such as an abnormal heat generation, vibration, and noise during
the use of this equipment, the volume of air may be excessively high or the endoscopic
images may NOT be displayed. Excessive air supply may cause the patient to suffer from
a sense of abdominal fullness or a stomachache. In such cases, stop equipment operation
immediately and contact your local PENTAX Medical service facility.
• Do NOT use this processor in a very hot and humid place. If the processor is used in an
environment with condensation, there is a risk of electric shock.
• Do NOT pull or disconnect the power cord during the use of this processor. If the power
cord is pulled or disconnected, the endoscopic images will NOT be displayed on the
monitor, with a consequent inability to move the endoscope in the desired direction.
In addition, there is a risk of excessive bleeding due to device operation becoming
impossible during the procedure.
• In case endoscopic live images become impossible to be displayed on the monitor during
a procedure, moving the endoscope in the desired direction will no longer be possible. In
addition, there is a risk of excessive bleeding due to device operation becoming impossible
during the procedure. In such cases, stop the procedure, release the angulation of the
endoscope, and then slowly and carefully withdraw the endoscope from the patient’s
lumen. After the main power switch has been turned off, wait for at least 1 minute before
turning it back on again and turn on the lamp. Ensure live images and still images are
switched normally.
• Do NOT drop this processor or apply a strong shock to it. Failure to observe this precaution
may cause loss of safety and effectiveness. If the processor is subjected to a strong
impact, stop use immediately and contact your local PENTAX Medical service facility.
• Do NOT use this processor if a system error occurs. The live image may stop and the operation
becomes impossible during the procedure, resulting in patient injuries, including bleeding.
• Do NOT remove the water proof cover of the key board. If it gets wet, failure to do so may
cause inoperable of the keyboard and may not be able to perform the procedure as intended.
• This processor is intended to be used in the electromagnetic environment specified by
the "Electromagnetic disturbances".
If the product is used in the unintended environment, the following abnormalities may occur.
– unintentionally excessively high or low amount of air is fed into the body lumen
– images displayed on the monitor rotate unintentionally
– live images from the endoscope are switched to saved still or video images unintentionally
• Do NOT use a sharp object, such as the tip of a pen, to press the touch panel or switches
of the processor or the keys on the keyboard. Failure to observe this precaution may
cause a failure, resulting in impaired operation of the unit.
• Always ensure that there is no problem with the patient and this processor during use.
• NEVER disassemble or modify the processor. Doing so may impair its original functionality
and possibly result in serious injury to the patient and /or user.

• With intense light emission for a long duration, the distal end of the endoscope may
become hot. To prevent burn injury, avoid continuous contact with the distal end of the
endoscope when it has become hot.
• To avoid electrical shock, make sure that user has no contact with patient and contact
points of connectors on rear panel simultaneously.
Warning
• Do NOT store this processor in a very hot and humid place or where it will be exposed
to direct sunlight or condensation. If the processor is used in a very hot environment,
there is a risk of burn injuries due to overheating of its exterior. If this product is used in
an environment with condensation, there is a risk of electric shock.
• When disposing the processor unit, dispose it in accordance with the laws and regulations
of the relevant country or region. Disposing it inappropriately may adversely affect the
environment. If you are unsure of the correct disposal method, contact your local PENTAX
Medical service facility.
• Clean this processor regularly. In addition to cleaning the surfaces of the equipment,
remove any foreign material that has adhered to the movable parts. Foreign material
adhering to parts such as the endoscope eject lever or electrical contacts may cause
device malfunction.
Caution
• If intense light is emitted for a long time, the distal end of the endoscope may become
hot. To prevent burn injuries, do NOT touch the distal end of the endoscope.
• Repairs should be undertaken only by a person or company authorized by PENTAX
Medical. Failure to observe this precaution may cause loss of safety and effectiveness.
Software version
The software version of the product corresponding to this IFU is described on its back cover.
Check that it matches the software version installed in the processor.
Check “System Information” (p. 126)for how to confirm the software version of the processor.

If it differs from the software version of the processor, contact your local PENTAX Medical service
facility.

Installation of equipments
Install the processor and peripheral devices in accordance with the installation examples in “3 -1. System
configuration” (p. 18). If this product and peripheral devices are to be installed in a cart, refer to the
manual of the cart for installation.
Warning
• When using a cart, place the cart on a stable and level surface. Failure to observe this
precaution may cause damage due to the processor falling out of the cart.
• When moving the cart in which the processor is installed, pass over the floor with level
difference carefully with keeping the gap between the casters of the cart and floor while paying
attention to a fall. Do NOT apply a strong impact or excessive vibrations to the processor, as

this could compromise the functionality and /or safety of the processor.
• Avoid placing the processor where it could be exposed to high temperature, humidity, direct

sunlight, wet, etc.
• The processor is an electromedical device incorporating delicate components and sophisticated
circuitry that should NOT be subjected to harsh conditions, including excessive vibrations and /
or severe impact. Do NOT drop the processor or apply a strong impact as this could compromise
the functionality and /or safety of the processor. Should the processor be mishandled or
dropped, stop using it and return it to PENTAX Medical for inspection and /or repair.
• Installing other devices near the processor or installing devices in a stack may cause abnormal
operation of the processor due to adverse effect mutually caused by each device. When
devices are required to be installed in close proximity due to inevitable reasons, ensure in
advance that there are no abnormalities to occur in each device.
• Avoid placing the processor where it may be exposed to liquids.
• Do NOT block the air vents of the processor. Blocking ventilation may cause the equipment to heat up.
– The distance from the air vents at the bottom is ensured by the rubber feet. Install this
processor in a location where the ventilation at the bottom will NOT be blocked.
Caution
• Install, operate, or store the processor and electromedical equipment used in combination
with the processor where it will be protected from dust. Excessive amounts of dust
accumulating inside the processor may cause it to malfunction, emit smoke, or catch fire or
may cause other problems.
• When connecting peripheral devices, ensure that each cable is firmly connected to the
specified connector. Incorrect connection may cause certain functions to be unavailable.
• Do NOT use the processor installed vertically. Failure to observe this precaution may cause
the processor to malfunction and eventually fail.

• When loading the processor on a shelf of the cart, provide sufficient space for attaching or
detaching the water bottle assembly easily.
• Use the OS - H5 for the water bottle assembly which is connected to the processor.

• Ensure that the total power consumption of the peripheral devices that are supplied with
3 power via the medical grade isolation transformer does NOT exceed the maximum rating
displayed on the medical grade isolation transformer.

• Connect the power cords from the processor or peripheral device of medical device grade
and the power cord from the medical grade isolation transformer to power outlets with a
protective earth conductor in a facility with a hospital grade earthing system installed.
Electromedical equipment can not be used with power outlets other than those having a
protective earth conductor that meet the safety requirements of electrical installations for
medically used rooms in hospitals and clinics.
• When using non - medical grade peripheral devices, ensure to supply power from a medical
grade isolation transformer to reduce the risk of electric shock. Do not connect any other
medical - grade devices which are not used to the isolation transformer.
• To avoid the risk of electric shock, this processor must be connected only to an appropriate
power outlet with a protective earth conductor.
• To prevent electric shock, do not use the processor in combination with devices for which
leakage current safety is not verified.

Warning
Ensure that the video cable is firmly connected to both the monitor and the processor. If the
video cable is NOT connected properly, it may get disconnected during a procedure, making
it impossible to display the endoscopic images.

Connecting a printer
• Use the Y/ C cable to connect the Y/ C connector to S input connector on the printer.
• Use the control cable to connect the REMOTE connector to a remote connector on the printer.
Note
• Video signals outputted from Y/ C connector of the processor are the NTSC or PAL type.
Use in accordance with the video signal format for the printer.
• When using a printer, be sure to adjust the settings of the printer such that the colors in
images appear the same on the monitor and in printouts.
• For compatible printers, refer to “Peripheral Devices” (p. 19).

Caution
Do NOT connect a USB flash memory via a USB hub as it may not be recognized by the processor.

• Perform USB Format before using SDCZ800 -128G (SanDisk). “USB Format” (p. 106)
• If the USB flash memory to be used has been infected by computer viruses, this product
3 may be damaged by the viruses. To protect the product from the damage by viruses, etc.
and to use it more securely, check the USB flash memory for viruses periodically.
• A USB flash memory other than that which PENTAX Medical has verified for operation
may not be recognized by the processor. For a list of verified USB flash memory, refer to
“Peripheral Devices” (p. 19).

Connecting a keyboard
Connect the keyboard to a USB port on the front or rear of the processor.
Note
When connecting the foot switch to the rear panel, use the USB port on the upper side of
the rear panel. Connecting the USB port on the lower side may cause interference with the
USB terminal of the foot switch in case of connecting a USB flash memory to the USB port
on the upper side.
Note
• When the processor is connected to an existing network environment through the RJ45
connector, it is necessary to use a router equipped with security functions between the
RJ45 connector of the processor and the network.
• The router should be connected only to the processor and the existing network, with no
other connections permitted.
• For details on the specifications of the router, contact your local PENTAX Medical service
facility.
• Connecting the processor to a network may result in the processor being exposed to
computer viruses and security vulnerabilities. For these reasons, you should consult the 3
network administrator or IT coordinators in your hospital or clinic before connecting the
processor to a network. It is the responsibility of the customer to establish a secure
network connection and to ensure that appropriate updated virus protection software is

with your PC environment.

Connecting an Endoscope
Connect an endoscope to the processor. Connect the water bottle assembly and suction source to the
endoscope before use. For details on the endoscope, water bottle assembly or suction source to be used,
refer to the corresponding manuals.
1. Hold the scope connector as shown in Figure 3.7 and turn the scope connector's Connector UP index
("▲") upward and push the scope connector into the video processor receptacle until it clicks.

Caution
• After connecting the endoscope to the processor, ensure that the endoscope is locked. If it
is not properly connected, communication with this product and endoscopic images will not
be displayed normally.
• When connecting the endoscope, take care NOT to trap a finger between the endoscope
eject lever and endoscope.
Warning
Before connecting the water bottle assembly to the processor, check for abnormalities such as
cracks on the exterior of the water bottle assembly and refrain from using it if abnormalities are
found.
1. Fill approximately two - thirds (to the “200” marking on the bottle scale) of the bottle with sterile water.
Then place the water bottle cap onto the bottle and tighten it securely.

• Ensure that the water bottle cap is tightened securely. If the cap is loose, the Air/ Water
supply may be inadequate.
• Do NOT use excessive force when tightening the water bottle cap.

The Air/ Water connector should be inserted into the holder on the water bottle cap when the
water bottle assembly is NOT connected to the processor (Figure 3.9). Water may leak out of the

• Remove the water bottle assembly before moving the processor. Failure to do so may result
in displacement and damage to the water bottle assembly.
• Remove the water bottle assembly before packing the processor for transportation. Failure to
do so may result in damage to the processor and the water bottle assembly.
3. Ensure that the O - ring is attached to the tip of the air pipe stem of the water bottle assembly and then
insert the air pipe stem into the water bottle socket of the processor until it clicks into position (Figure 3.10).

Caution
Do NOT use excessive force when pushing the water bottle assembly toward the processor.
Rough handling may cause water to leak from the water bottle assembly.

Before use, the video processor, endoscope, accessories, and other components must be prepared and
carefully inspected according to the IFU. Any equipment used in combination with the video processor must
also be prepared and inspected according to the respective instruction manuals.
Refer to “7-1. Troubleshooting guide” (p. 152) for assistance in diagnosing a video processor malfunction. If
the problem persists after troubleshooting or there is an apparent failure, do not use the video processor. Send
it for repair according to “7- 3. Repairs” (p. 162).
Warning
• Always perform pre - use inspection before each use. NEVER use a video processor with a
suspected abnormality. Doing so may result in malfunction, video processor damage, and /or

injury to the patient and /or user.
• Check the following before you begin inspection.

• Wear insulated gloves when performing inspection.
• Ensure that another video processor is also prepared to avoid interruption of the procedure due
to video processor failure or unforeseen events.

Inspection
5. Check that the distal end of the endoscope emits light.
6. After completing the check, tap the Lamp icon on the touch panel to turn off the lamp.
Caution
• Do NOT look directly at the light emitted from the distal end of the endoscope. Failure to
observe this precaution may cause eye injury.

Inspect the automatic exposure control by observing the images from the endoscope on the monitor
while the lamp is lit.
Caution
• If an object is left in close proximity to the distal end of the endoscope for a long time,
excessive absorption of the emitted light could cause heating of the object. To prevent
damage, do NOT leave any object near the distal end of the endoscope when it is turned on.
• Do NOT put your hand close to or hold the distal end of the endoscope while wearing dark-
colored gloves such as purple color or blue color, to avoid heating of the gloves, which could
cause a burn injury. Dark- colored (e.g. purple - or blue - colored) rubber gloves tend to absorb
heat easily.

4. Block the hole in the top of the air/ water feeding valve. Confirm that a steady stream of air bubbles is
being released from the distal end of the endoscope (Figure 4.10).

5. Pull the endoscope out of the container, and depress the air/ water feeding valve. Check that a certain
amount of water flows out from the distal end of the endoscope (Figure 4.11).

Warning
All inspected items should be functioning properly to perform endoscopic examination. If there is
a problem with any of the functions, do NOT perform endoscopic examination and contact your
local PENTAX Medical service facility.
Power State
The following three power modes are defined based on states of the main power switch on the rear panel
and on /standby switch on the touch panel.
Caution
After the main power switch has been turned off, wait for at least 1 minute before turning it back
on again. A fuse may be blown if you turn the main power switch on and off repeatedly within a

short period of time.

Directions for Use
Perform cleaning at the bed side (preliminary cleaning) immediately after use as described in the IFU of
the endoscope. Then, follow the care procedure described below.
Caution
Ensure that no chemical solution or water enters the processor during the care procedure. In
particular, make absolutely sure that no water enters through the connectors and air vents. Entry
of a chemical solution or water into the processor may cause it to malfunction.
1. Disconnect the Air/ Water connector, suction tube, and water jet feeding tube from the scope connector.
2. Turn off the Air/ Water pump.
3. Turn off the lamp.
4. Turn off the on /standby switch of the processor.
Caution
Do NOT turn off the connected peripheral devices before turning off the processor. Failure to
observe this precaution can cause failure of the processor.

Sprays may allow aerosolized liquids to enter the processor through small openings, for
example, the air vents, resulting in processor malfunction.
Caution
For disinfection when wiping the surfaces, use the chemicals described above. Failure to do so
may result in contamination of the user and equipment damage.
Warning
• The service life period of this processor is 6 years.
• Please read and fully understand the IFU of this product and ensure to use properly. If the product
is used improperly, the product may become unusable before the end of its estimated service
life.
• Get a periodical inspection done by PENTAX Medical - designated experts. Without the appropriate
inspections, the product may NOT last until the end of its estimated service life.

When turning off the peripheral devices of the processor, follow the instructions in the manual
for each peripheral device.
2. Turn off the main power switch on the rear panel (by pressing the left side of the switch) to turn off
the processor.
Warning
• Do NOT drop the processor or subject it to a strong impact. Failure to observe this precaution
may cause loss of safety and effectiveness. If the processor is subjected to a strong impact,
stop use immediately and contact your local PENTAX Medical service facility.
• Do NOT store this processor in a very hot and humid place or where it will be exposed to
direct sunlight or condensation. If the processor is used in a very hot environment, there is a
risk of burn injuries due to overheating of its exterior. If this product is used in an environment
with condensation, there is a risk of electric shock.
Caution
• Turn off the processor and disconnect the power cord before storage. When the device is
connected to the power strip in the cart, power down the cart as well and remove the power
code from the power strip.
• Store this processor where it will be protected from dust. If any dust is confirmed, ensure
to remove it. Furthermore, when storing the processor for a long period, take precautions to
reduce dust build - up within the processor. Excessive amounts of dust accumulating inside
the processor may cause it to malfunction, emit smoke, or catch fire or may cause other
problems.

6-3. Storage of the water bottle assembly
Storage and maintenance
Warning
• Ensure that the water bottle assembly is properly cleaned and high - level disinfected and /
or sterilized on each use depending upon the patient and /or type of endoscopic procedure.
• For storage of the PENTAX water bottle assembly OS - H5, follow the instructions given in the
IFU of OS - H5.
If the On / Standby switch does not illuminate when the main power switch is turned on, turn off the main
power switch and then check that the power cord is securely plugged in.
If the processor still On / Standby switch does not illuminate when the main power switch is turned on after
checking the power cord, a fuse may blow.
Follow the procedure given below to replace the fuses.
As for model name of the fuse, refer to “1 Package contents”.
Warning
• Always replace the fuses using the supplied spare fuses. If fuses other than the supplied
spare fuses are used, the power to the processor may be interrupted suddenly during use.
• When replacing the fuses, do NOT touch parts of the processor for persons other than the operator
in charge of the replacement. Failure to observe this precaution may result in electric shock.
• If the supplied spare fuses are NOT available, contact your local PENTAX Medical service
facility.
Caution
Do NOT attempt to use the processor when the fuses are NOT installed.

• A flat- blade screwdriver is required to replace the fuses. Take protective measures, such as

Troubleshooting
When returning the processor for repairs to PENTAX Medical, be aware of the following points. For further
details, contact your local PENTAX Medical service facility.
1. All equipment requiring repairs should be disinfected by wiping the surface with gauze dampened with
a disinfection solution, packed in a shipment box containing enclosed items, and shipped with details
of the damage or problem.
2. Write down the repair order number and your contact name, phone number, and shipping address on
a piece of paper and include it in the package.
3. Together with the processor, ship all accessories that you think may be, in any way, related to the
processor damage or problem.

• Ensure to return the processor to PENTAX Medical for repairs. Note that PENTAX Medical is
in no way liable for any injuries to patients or users, damage or malfunction of the processor,
as a result of repairs being undertaken by an unauthorized person or company.
