What do you think is our topic today?

It is about persuading someone to buy products.
Yes , very good!

2.Presentation
Alright class , our lesson for today is all about
propaganda techniques.
Propaganda techniques have 7 types:
-testimonial
-transfer
-bandwagon
-card-stacking
-glittering generalities
-name-calling/stereotyping
-repetition

I will be discussing the first four and the last

three will be discussed by Ma’am Sheen.
Before proceeding to the propaganda
techniques, we will discuss first what is
propaganda.

Propaganda
- is the spreading of information with the
purpose of influencing feelings or actions. It is not
so important whether the information is true or (The students listen.)
false , it is all propaganda.
-is always biased and can be negative or
positive. Any news that is used to persuade is all
about propaganda. More or less systematic effort
to manipulate other people’s belief , attitudes or
actions.

Do you have questions class?

Are you sure? None Ma’am.
Okay let’s proceed. Yes, Ma’am.

The first propaganda technique is testimonial.

“Testimonial”
-this popular advertising technique uses
renowned, or celebrity figures to endorse
product and services. When a famous person
vouches for something , the viewers are likely to
consider the person’s credibility and popularity.
Example:
“Things go better with Coke”.
-Sharon Cuneta
Do you know Sharon Cuneta?
Yes , Ma’am.
Very good! She really is. Sharon Cuneta is a famous celebrity.
This technique is used to convince us without
examining the facts more carefully.
Does drinking Coke make things go better?
Why? No, Ma’am.
It is because drinking soft drinks can cause
Exactly! That is correct. health issues.
Another example is the advertisement by
Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. They
advertise the San Marino corned tuna and they
said , “Here’s to Love that Last.”
Do you agree with them?
Why? No, Ma’am.
Yes, Rodel. (Rodel raises his hand.)
That’s funny to hear. Even them broke up Ma’am.
How about the product itself , is it nutritious?
(Princess raises her hand.)
No Ma’am. Eating canned goods is not
Very good! They just make the famous people good also for our health.
to be their endorsers so that the product will be
sold.
Any questions?
Let us proceed to the second one. None Ma’am.
The second propaganda technique is transfer.
“ Transfer”
-it is a technique to project certain qualities
(this can either be positive or negative) of a
person, ideology , or object to other things and
people.
Example:
“A major soft drink brand was accused of
having traces of pesticides , a couple of years ago.
While these allegations were on the rise , the
entire carbonated drink industry took a hit. Fruit
juices and other drinks were able to do great
business.”
What was accused of having traces of
pesticides?
Yes , Bea. (A student raises his hand.)
Correct let’s give two claps! A major soft drink brand.
Who took the hit while these allegations were
on the rise?
Yes, Steven. (Steven raises his hand.)
Very good! It is the carbonated drink Ma’am.
It is when an advertiser uses this technique
when he tries to transfer our good feelings about
one thing , to his/her product.
This technique happens when a prestige is used
along with an idea or argument to make it look
more acceptable.
Another example is when a famous product will
face issues , the other brand will took a hit.
Did you understand class?
Do you have questions?
The third one is the bandwagon. Yes , Ma’am.
“ Bandwagon” None , Ma’am.
-is all about persuading the target audience
to take action. It is about creating an urge
amongst people to become a part of the “in
crowd”. To enforce such a feeling
advertisers typically use phrases like “join
the crowd” or “trending now” for their
products and services.
Example:
“Millions are using it. Don’t be left behind.
Wear Nike now.”

From the given example , what did you

observe?
Yes , Kent.
Very good! (Kent raises his hand.)
This technique manipulate us not to be left It means we also need to wear Nike now.
behind. Is it good students?
Why?
No , Ma’am.
Exactly! Nowadays we need to be practical. We It is because we cannot have all what we
need to think many times before buying it, we want.
need to think first if it is not necessary or not .We
should not be ambitious because the reality is not
all of us can afford the things that we want.
Do you agree with me?
Do you help your parents with their works?
In what way? Yes, Ma’am.
Yes, Ma’am.
It is by being mindful in spending the
allowance they give me because I understand
That is awesome class! how tiring it is to earn money. I give value on
We need to help also our parents even in their hardwork for me.
simple ways.
Another example for bandwagon is you want to
buy an iPhone because it is part of the “in crowd
now.”
Is it really necessary class?
Of course it is not. Mobile phones like android
still works. We need to realize that it is not cool
specially you were forcing them to buy you one. Maybe , Ma’am.
Do not be manipulated. Do you have questions?
The fourth one is the card-stacking.
“Card-stacking”
-it is manipulating information so that one None , Ma’am.
product looks better than another. This often
happens by leaving out important information ,
they want to hear , even if the information is not
based on facts.
Example:
“Removes 99.9% of germs.
Do you agree with that statement?
Why?
Correct! Let us give two claps.
Card-stacking means stacking the cards in favor No Ma’am.
of the product. We need to rub it to remove 99.9% of germs.
Another example is someone is selling fries and
she said , it is less oil , less fat , less calories.
Do you agree with that?
Very good! Fries were cooked with too much
oil. Do not be easily manipulated. Be health
conscious. No , Ma’am.
Do you have questions?
Are you sure?

No, Ma’am.
Yes , Ma’am.

3. Application

propaganda techniques we had discussed earlier. I will give you 10 minutes.

Very good!

helping one another is a good value that
everyone must posses.

None of us is as smart as all of us because
together we can do so much.
