TASK TWO A

The last digit of my MEC ID is 8. Assuming the family A has 8 children constituting a

varying number of boys and girls. The sample space of a family children would be

X ={ 0 , 1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ,7 ,8 }

Where x is the number of girls that assume values; 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

TASK TWO B

applying combination, the family can have several combinations of boys and girls to sum up

to 8 children. Let n be the total number of children (8). When x=0 ; we have 0 girls and 8

boys in the family. This can be represented mathematically as n∁ x when x=0 ; 8 ∁0=1

8 ∁1=8 ; 8 ∁2=28 ; 8 ∁3=56 , 8 ∁4 =70; 8 ∁5=56 , 8 ∁6=28 , 8 ∁7=8, and 8 ∁8=1

TASK THREE A

14% of customers purchased product A and 20% of customers purchased product B.

Calculate the probability that exactly eight of the customers have purchased any one of the

two products

((A + 6) %) of customers purchased product A

A = 8, therefore, 14% of customers purchased product A

((A + 12) %) of customers purchased product B

Therefore, 20% of customers purchased product B.

Out of the 12 customers, the probability that exactly eight of the customers have purchased

any one of the two products would be calculated as follows.

Let the p be the probability of successful customers purchasing and q be unsuccessful

customers not purchasing. Using Binomial Distribution

For product A, we have p= 0.14 and for product B p = 0.2

Therefore, for product A, we have

8 4
12 ∁8 x 0.14 x 0.86 =0.000039959

8 4
12 ∁8 x 0.2 x 0.8 =0.000519

¿ 0.000039959+0.000519=0.000559

TASK THREE B

This would 1 subtract the probability that any of the product was not sold (Elart Von Collani

and Klaus Dräger, 2001).

BUSINESS MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS 10

The probability that any of the product was not sold is given by:

For product A we have

0 12
12 ∁0 x 0.14 x 0.86 =0.1637

For product B, we have

0 12
12 ∁0 x 0.2 x 0.8 =0.0687

Combining the two, we have

¿ 0.1637+ 0.0687=0.232

Therefore, at least one customer bought the product is given by:

1−0.232=0.7676

TASK THREE C

Given that 𝑃(𝑋 = 0) = 14/2 = 7

The value of p would 7 divided by the number of customers, 12

P = 7/12

Given that the variance of 𝑋 is 2.4

The variance of the distribution is given by pq, where p is the probability of success and q is

the probability of failure.

Therefore, npq=2.4

Combining the sales percentage for the two products, we have 14+ 20 = 34%

But pq = 2.4 and q = 1- 0.34 = 0.66

2.4 2.4
Therefore, P= = =0.303
nq 0.66 x 12
BUSINESS MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS 11

TASK FOUR A

Normal distribution is an important tool used in business. It aids to determine some properties

of the data and gives foundation using others statistical tools for decision making. Normal

Distribution is helpful in business for making timely and accurate timely decisions, manage

and measure risks, and checks the real application of decisions by analyzing and interpreting

collected information. Normal Distribution helps quality control, business operations, and

cost management through necessitating the determination of the most sensitive and complex

part of the variable. In business, variables which are not normally distributed can be

normalized by variable transformation. Therefore, it helps to study several discrete variables

with large sample size (Tong, 2012).

TASK FOUR B

P(μ− ( A+5 4 ) σ ≤ X ≤ μ +( A+5 4 ) σ )

But A= my MEC ID’s last digit

A=8

P(μ− ( 8+5 4 )σ ≤ X ≤ μ +( 8+5 4 ) σ)

P(μ− ( 125 ) σ ≤ X ≤ μ+( 125 ) σ )
P(μ−( 2.4 ) σ ≤ X ≤ μ+ ( 2.4 ) σ )

P(−( 2.4 ) σ ≤ X ≤+ ( 2.4 ) σ )

P(−( 2.4 ) ≤ X ≤+ ( 2.4 ) )

From the normal distribution table, the Z value for +2.4 is 0.4918 and the Z value for −2.4 is

0.4918.

Therefore, P(x)= 0.9838

BUSINESS MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS 12

TASK FOUR C

The last two digits of my MEC ID are 98 = B

Therefore,

Mean=120+ B=120+ 98=218

Standard Deviation=73+ B=73+ 98=172

The student length of the student x is between

( 87+ B ) ≤ x ≤ ( 100+ B )

Since B = 98;

( 87+ 98 ) ≤ x ≤ ( 100+ 98 )

( 185 ) ≤ x ≤ ( 198 )

μ−x x−μ
Therefore, For normal distribution, z= ≤ x≤
σ σ

218−185 198−218
z= =0.192∧z= =−0.116
172 172

z=−0.116 ≤ x ≤ 0.192

From the Z score table,

Z=0.192=0.8888 – 0.5=0.3888

And z = -0.116 = 0.4522

Hence, we have 0.3888 + 0.4522

¿ 0.841
