• Sustainable Tiny House Design

1) Objective:
Design a small house with sustainable materials and processes, emphasizing livability, energy
efficiency, and resource conservation.
.

2) Key Terminologies
• Sustainable materials are made from renewable resources or recycled content, resulting in
low environmental effects.
• Passive solar design uses natural sunshine for heating and cooling.
• Energy Star is a program for identifying energy-efficient appliances and devices.
• The greywater system reuses wastewater from showers and sinks for non-potable needs.
• Cob is a construction material derived from dirt, straw, and water.

3) List the materials and technologies that shall be used in your project.
Materials:
• Cement • Fine and coarse aggregates • Blocks • Electronics • Wood • Steel • Tiles •
Sanitary items. Technologies:
• Solar panels • Solar hot water system • LED lighting • Smart thermostat • Energy-efficient
appliances.

4) Estimate the performance and durability of your project.

It's important to clarify that a Sustainable Tiny House Design project itself isn't a physical structure,
but a blueprint or concept. However, the design choices within this project can significantly impact
the performance and durability of the tiny house built based on those plans. Here's a breakdown:
• Performance:
• Energy Efficiency: Sustainable tiny house designs typically prioritize features like:
• Solar panels for generating electricity, resulting in lower energy bills and reduced reliance on the
grid.
• Proper insulation to maintain comfortable temperatures year-round with minimal heating and cooling
needs.
• Energy-efficient appliances and lighting to further reduce energy consumption.
• Water Efficiency: Water-saving features can include:
• Low-flow faucets and showerheads to minimize water usage.
• Rainwater harvesting systems to collect rainwater for irrigation or non-potable uses.
• Composting toilets (depending on location and regulations) to reduce reliance on municipal water for
waste disposal.
• Durability:
• Material Selection: Sustainable designs often focus on using high-quality, durable materials like:
• Treated lumber or composite materials to resist rot and insect damage.
• Metal roofing with a long lifespan compared to traditional shingles.
• Proper flashing around windows and doors to prevent water infiltration.
• Construction Techniques: The design should consider proper building practices for:
• Waterproofing the foundation and exterior walls.
• Adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup and mold growth.
• Structural integrity to withstand wind, snow, and seismic activity (depending on location).
• Estimated Durability:
• With proper material selection, construction techniques, and maintenance, a well-designed
sustainable tiny house can last for several decades, similar to a traditional small home.
• It's important to note:
• Specific performance and durability will vary depending on the design choices, materials used,
construction quality, and local climate.
• Regular maintenance is crucial for any dwelling, including inspecting for leaks, checking roof
integrity, and maintaining appliances.
5) Propose an implementation budget for your design on MS Excel.

6) List down the potential outcomes of your project and how will it resolve the current
challenges of our society.

Outcomes :

• Sustainable tiny houses minimize environmental impact by using recycled or recyclable materials in
construction.
• Solar panels and rainwater harvesting are two examples of energy-saving technologies.
• Encouraging a minimalist lifestyle with fewer total resource requirements.
• Increased Housing Affordability: Tiny dwellings make homeownership more feasible, particularly
for young people and those suffering with standard housing expenses.
• More Efficient Land Use: Smaller living areas enable denser housing projects without compromising
green space in cities.
• Lower Utility Costs: Because tiny houses are built to be energy and water-efficient, they have lower
expenses.
• Greater Mobility: Tiny residences on wheels allow you to live a nomadic lifestyle or simply migrate
for job or personal reasons.
Addressing Social Challenges:
• Sustainability: Sustainable tiny dwellings immediately address climate change and resource
depletion.
• Housing Crisis: By making housing more affordable, small dwellings can assist in reducing the
burden of excessive housing expenses and homelessness.
• Urbanisation: Tiny dwellings provide a solution to support population expansion in cities without
causing sprawl.
