Chapter 1

1. How does the narrator describe Gatsby?


He talks about have Gatsby “ represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn” and
having a “ sensitivity to the promises of life.”

2. From where did the narrator come and why? He was from Minnesota and he came to New York to
learn the bond business.
3. Describe the narrator's house.
He lived in a house that he described as a “weather beaten cardboard bungalow.”
4. Describe the Buchanan's house. They had a red and white Georgian Colombian Marion that
overlooked the bay, huge lawn that stretched for a quarter mile right to the beach, had sundials,
brick sidewalks, gardens, had vines, French windows, and a porch.
5. How does Nick know Daisy and Tom? Daisy is nicks second cousin and nick knew Tom from
college.
6. Describe Tom. What is our impression of him in Chapter 1? A big bulky muscular man who
releases arrogance and dominance.
7. What kind of person is Daisy? Daisy is slightly odd but cheerful and possesses a way with people
that if she looks at you it’s like she only sees you.
8. What did Miss Baker tell Nick about Tom? That he is having an affair.
9. When asked about her daughter, what does Daisy say? That she was happy it was a girl when she
was born so she can grow up as a beautiful little fool.
10. How is Gatsby introduced into the novel? It states a figure was was standing with his hands in
his pockets across the bay.
Chapter 2
1. What is the "valley of ashes"? A area between west egg and New York City, where they is a lot of
poverty.
2. What are the"eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg"? Painted eyes that are fading.
3. Who did Tom take Nick to meet? Tom took nick to see his mistress.
4. Identify Myrtle and George Wilson. Myrtle is time mistress and George Wilson is her husband who
is also supposed to sell a car to Tom.
5. What did Mrs. Wilson buy while she was out with Tom and Nick? She bought a dog, the town
tattle, a moving picture magazine, cold cream, and a flask of perfume.
6. Where did they go? What was at 158th Street? They went to the apartment that’s on that street.
7. Identify:
Catherine- myrtles sister
Mr. and Mrs McKee- a pale slender photographer is who me McKee is and mrs McKee is his model
8. What does Catherine tell Nick about Gatsby? That’s he’s the nephew or the cousin of Kaiser
Wilhelm, which she says is where he gets all his money.
9. What reason did Myrtle give for marrying George Wilson? Because she thought he was a
gentlemen and that he might have known something about breeding.
10. What did Tom do to Myrtle when she mentioned Daisy's name? Broke her nose by smacking her
with an open palm.

Chapter 3
1. Describe Gatsby's wealth. List some of the things that represent wealth. Blue gardens, a raft, a
beach, two motorboats, a rolls Royce, a station wagon, servants, more then one gardener, having
five carts of lemons and oranges, a fresh juice maker, a cort of caters, a ton if decorations, a ton of
food on buffet tables, a bar with a real brass rail, gun and other liquor, and an orchestra.
2. What kind of people come to Gatsby's parties? Regular day people.
3. Why did Nick Carraway go to the party? Because he was invited by Gatsby himself.
4. How does Nick meet Gatsby? When Jordan baker and nick went to a table and all of a sudden
gatsby started talking to nick saying his face was familiar.
5. What are some of the stories about Gatsby? That he was an Oxford man, that he killed a man.
6. Is Gatsby a "phony"? Yes he is .
7. Describe Nick's relationship with Jordan. He sees her as beautiful but untruthful.
Chapter 4
1. Who is Kilpspringer? The man who stays is gadsys house for free.
2. What does Gatsby tell Nick about himself? He fought in the war and got a medal and he went to
Oxford.
3. What "matter" did Gatsby have Jordan Baker discuss with Nick? To set up a meeting with daisy.
4. Who is Mr. Wolfsheim? A sort of criminal with human teeth as cuffs and is a friend of gatsby.
5. What does Mr.Wolfsheim tell Nick about Gatsby? That he is very careful with women.
6. What does Jordan tell Nick about Daisy, Gatsby and Tom? That they used to date before he went
off to war.
Chapter 5
1. Describe the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. Why is he so nervous? It was awkward and
because they haven’t seen each other in a very long time.
2. How long did it take Gatsby to make the money to buy the mansion? It took him three years.
3. Why did Gatsby want Daisy to see the house and his clothes? So she would see the wealth he
has.

4. What had the green light on the dock meant to Gatsby? It symbolizes his live for daisy that one
day they will be together.
5. What had Gatsby turned Daisy into in his own mind? They’re past selves that’s he keeps fighting
to go back to.
Chapter 6
1. What is Gatsby's real history? Where is he from, and what is his name? His real name is James
gatz and he’s from North Dakota.
2. What did Don Cody do for Gatsby? He gave him a job.
3. What is Daisy's opinion of Gatsby's party? How does this affect him? She doesn’t like them and
that hurts him.
4. What does Gatsby want from Daisy? To tell Tom that she never loved him.
Chapter 7
1. What was Gatsby's reaction to Daisy's child? He was confused and hurt and it interrupted his
plans.
2. What did Wilson do to Myrtle? Why? Locked her in her room because he starts to think she’s
having and affair.
3. Why do the four drive into the city on such a hot afternoon? Because daisy said she wanted to go
into the city.
4. What does Gatsby think about Daisy's relationship with Tom? They it only happened because he
was yo poor tor her at the time and she was tired of waiting.
5. What is Daisy's reaction to both men? She gets flustered and indecisive and just asks them to
stop.
6. What happens on the way home from New York? Daisy runs myrtle over with the car.
7. How do these people react to Myrtle's death: a lot of people come to spectate and look at the
seen and Wilson. For example ether little boys searching in the dirt for dark spots.

Identify major things that happen to these characters in this chapter:


Wilson: he became slightly insane and murdered Gatsby due to gun believing that Gatsby was the
man who was having and affair with his wife and then came back to run her over with a car.
Tom: his mistress was murdered.
Nick: learned that many people aren’t with anything’s and supportive and handled everything that
Gatsby couldn’t
Gatsby: he was murdered by Wilson.

8. What is the true relationship between Daisy and Tom? They love each other but they don’t. With
all of this thought something keeps them together.

Chapter 8
1. What does Gatsby tell Nick about his past? Is it true? He talks about daisy and his relationship
and yes.
2. What does Michaelis believe caused Myrtle to run? He thought she was running away from her
husband.
3. Why did she really run? She was running towards the car because she thought it was tom.
4. Why does Wilson believe that Gatsby killed Myrtle? Because it was his car who was the murder
weapon.
5. What does Wilson do? He kills Gatsby and then kills himself.
Chapter 9
1. Why couldn't Nick get anyone to come to Gatsby's funeral? Because those people were never
real friends with Gatsby in the first place.
2. Who is Henry C. Gatz? Gatsby’s father.
3. What is the book Henry Gatz shows Nick? Why is it important to the novel? It’s Gatsby’s journal
from when he was younger and it’s important because it shows the plan that he had to get to where
he was.
4. What happens between Nick and Jordan Baker? They separated and she got engaged.
5. What does Nick say about people like Daisy and Tom? That their disciple people and their meant
for each other and they use others ti get what they want and they just fall back on their wealth
