The synchronized fully automated National and Local Elections (NLE) was conducted on Monday, 09 May
2022 as mandated in Section 2 of RA 7166. Likewise, the ARMM elections were also synchronized with the 2019
NLE per RA 10153.
It’s not just the presidential post that will be decided on 9 May. Thousands of positions are being contested
across the country – from the vice presidency and Senate seats, to 18,000 local positions, including city mayors and
provincial governors.
Findings: While the Philippines' national and local elections in May 2022 will be the first to be held in the aftermath
of a global pandemic, social media will undoubtedly influence the outcome. The 2016 presidential election was widely
regarded as the Philippines' first mainstream "social media election." Rodrigo Duterte swept into power with the help
of what appeared to be a "army" of devoted social media followers in that election. Scholars of Philippine politics
credited Duterte's victory to his campaign's savvy use of social media, which included spreading false information. To
