Lesson Connections:
1. Which characteristics of each plant were most helpful in possibly identifying it and why?
Plant 1: The vibrant purple blooms and unique cone shaped flower head were features as they are typical of the
Purple Coneflower often seen in gardens and natural settings.
Plant 2: The absence of needles and the presence of cones played a role, in recognizing the Douglas Fir tree as
these characteristics are common, among coniferous trees but the specific pattern of needles aided in
distinguishing it.
2. Do you think your plant has enough unique characteristics to be a good piece of evidence in a crime?
Why or why not? Yes. The Purple Coneflower could serve as evidence in a particular area where it is
grown as it is not naturally occurring everywhere. The Douglas Fir could be evidence because of its
habitat needs, which could indicate a specific geographic region where it is frequently seen.
3. What difficulties did you have when examining your plant evidence? It was quite tricky to pinpoint the
type of conifer because various fir species look alike. Moreover telling apart the Purple Coneflower,
from blooming plants needed a close inspection of the flowers shape and the structure of its leaves.
