HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

In the past few months, we have witnessed several incidents where employees faced
health emergencies while at work.A very good example was an employee who was
epileptic and he would get attacks during working hours, also staff members
collapsing. These occurrences have not only raised concerns about individual well-
being but also highlighted a significant gap in our ability to respond effectively to such
emergencies and we should be committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of
our employees, which remains a top priority for our organisation. To address this, I
propose that we initiate a basic first aid training program for key staff members
across all departments.

The objective of this training is twofold;


1. To empower our employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide
immediate assistance in emergency situations, and
2. To ensure a safer working environment for everyone.

The benefits of implementing such a program are;

Immediate Response to Emergencies


Trained staff can provide crucial first aid before medical professionals arrive,
potentially saving lives.

Enhanced Safety Culture


Demonstrating our commitment to employee safety can significantly boost morale
and contribute to a positive workplace culture.

Compliance and Duty of Care


This initiative also aligns with our legal responsibilities to provide a safe work
environment and to take reasonable care of our employees' health and safety.
Given the urgency and importance of this matter, I am seeking your approval to
proceed with organizing the necessary training sessions at the earliest possible
opportunity. I propose partnering with a certified first aid training provider to ensure
the program is comprehensive, effective, and delivered in a manner that minimizes
operational disruption and in this case, I requested procurement to assist and they
got a quotation from Red Cross Society.

Our aim will be to cover all key personnel to ensure that each team has trained first
aid responders.

Fire Safety Training and Drills


In addition to first aid, I recommend the incorporation of Fire Safety Training, which
will include practical fire drills. This will ensure that employees are not only familiar
with the theoretical aspects of fire safety but also have hands-on experience in
responding to fire alarms and using firefighting equipment. In the recent past, we
experienced two instances where fire occurred, the first was with ZESCO and the
second was within our building in the control room where the inverter cables had
sparks and there was a big smoke in the room.
Given the urgency of bolstering our emergency preparedness, I seek your approval
to initiate these training programs at the earliest convenience. Thank you for
considering this proposal.
I believe that with your support, we can enhance our preparedness for health
emergencies and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and supportive work
environment for all our employees.
