HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING MODULE

Welcome to the Module Preparing Computer-Aided Drawings

This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete.
The unit of competency Prepare Computer-Aided Drawings is
one of the Common Competencies which contains the knowledge, skills
and attitudes.
You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order
to complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning
outcome there are Information Sheets, Resource Sheets and Reference
Materials for further reading to help you better understand the required
activities. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check
at the end of each learning outcome. Get the answer key from your trainer
and check your work honestly. If you have questions, please don’t
hesitate to ask him/her for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills
covered in this module because you have:

· Been working in the same industry for some time.

· Already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a
particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally
recognized so you won’t have to do the same training again. If you have
qualifications or Certificates of Competency from previous trainings, show
them to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still relevant to this
module, they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL.

A Trainee Record Book (TRB) is given to you to record important

dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist you in
providing further details to your trainer/assessor. A Record of
Achievement/Progress Chart is also provided to your trainer to
complete/accomplish once you have completed the module. This will
show your own progress.

DIRECTION FOR USE OF THE CBLM

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required competency:
PREPARE COMPUTER-AIDED DRAWINGS. This will be the source of
information for you to acquire the knowledge and skills in this particular
module with minimum supervision or help from your trainer. With the aid
of this material, you will acquire the competency independently and at
your own pace.

Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the training
of this unit. Read through the module carefully. It is divided into sections
which covers all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully
complete in this module.

Work through all the information sheets and complete the activities in each
section. Do what is asked in the INSTRUCTIONAL SHEETS and
complete the SELF-CHECK. Suggested references are included to
supplement the materials provided in this module.
Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager.
He/she is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things.
Ask for help.

Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider
when you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and
take notes.

Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.

Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own
progress.
When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the activities
outlined in the module.

As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your
progress. Your trainer gives feedback/pre-assessment reports for this
reason. When you have successfully completed each element or learning
outcome, ask your trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready for
assessment.

Preparing and Selecting Computer Aided Drawing Tools,
Instruments, Supplies and Materials and Equipment

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Select and prepare computer aided drawing tools, materials and equipment for
working drawing following job requirements.
With this, the following considerations are strictly emphasized as Standard
Operating Procedure during and after the utilization of the Drafting Tools/Instruments,
Materials and Equipment:

Preparing and Selecting Computer-Aided Drawing Tools, Instruments,

Supplies, and Materials: A Step-by-Step Guide

The process of preparing and selecting tools, instruments, supplies, and

materials for Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) is essential for achieving high-quality
results in design and drafting. This guide outlines a systematic approach to ensure
that all necessary components are appropriately chosen and prepared for effective
use.

Step 1: Identify Project Requirements

Before selecting tools and materials, understand the specific requirements of the
project. This involves:
• Defining Objectives: Determine the goals of the CAD project, including the
type of drawings (2D or 3D) and the complexity of the designs.
• Assessing Scope: Evaluate the scale of the project, which will influence the
choice of software and hardware.

Step 2: Select CAD Software

Choosing the right CAD software is critical. Consider the following:
Functionality: Identify software that meets the project needs, such as AutoCAD for
2D drafting or SolidWorks for 3D modeling.
• User Experience: Evaluate the software's interface and usability. A user-
friendly interface can significantly reduce the learning curve for new users.
• Trial Versions: Test the software through trial versions to assess
performance and compatibility with existing systems.

Step 3: Determine Hardware Requirements

The hardware must support the selected CAD software effectively. Key
considerations include:
• Computer Specifications: Ensure the computer has sufficient processing
power (CPU), memory (RAM), and a capable graphics card to handle
complex drawings and rendering tasks.

• Peripherals: Select input devices such as graphic tablets or high-precision
mice, which can enhance accuracy in drawing.

Step 4: Gather Tools and Instruments

Identify and gather the necessary tools and instruments for CAD operations:
• Input Devices: Choose devices that enhance user interaction with the
software, such as stylus pens for tablets or ergonomic mice.
• Output Devices: Select printers and plotters that can produce high-quality
prints of the designs. Consider the size and type of media they can handle.

Step 5: Acquire Supplies and Materials

The physical supplies and materials required for CAD projects include:
• Printing Supplies: High-quality paper and ink for producing clear and durable
prints of designs.
• Storage Solutions: Invest in external hard drives or cloud storage for backing
up design files and ensuring data security.

Step 6: Organize the Workstation

Setting up an efficient workstation is crucial for productivity:
• Ergonomics: Arrange the workstation to promote comfort and reduce strain.
This includes adjustable chairs and desks, and positioning monitors at eye
level.
• Tool Organization: Keep tools and materials organized and easily accessible
to minimize disruptions during the drafting process.

Step 7: Implement Safety and Maintenance Practices

Ensure that safety and maintenance practices are in place to protect both the user
and equipment:
• Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular checks and maintenance for
hardware and software to ensure optimal performance.
• Safety Precautions: Follow safety guidelines, such as keeping the
workspace tidy and ensuring that all equipment is turned off when not in use.

Step 8: Review and Adjust

After the initial setup, continuously review the effectiveness of the selected tools and
materials:
• Feedback Loop: Gather feedback from users regarding the tools and
software. This can help identify areas for improvement or adjustment.
• Adaptation: Be prepared to adapt and upgrade tools or software as project
requirements evolve or as new technologies become available.

The preparation and selection of computer-aided drawing tools, instruments,

supplies, and materials are foundational to the success of any CAD project. By
following a structured, step-by-step approach, designers and engineers can ensure
that they have the right resources to produce high-quality designs efficiently. This
