MAT3512 Precalculus Assignment 1 .

Instructions: Answer all the questions. Try to understand each question before you
answer it and show all your working.

Question 1.

1.1 Determine whether the equation below defines y as a function of x.

(a) x = y 3 + 1 [3]

(b) 3|x + 1| + y 2 = 0 [3]

1.2 Sketch the Cartesian product R × {−1, 1} and highlight a subset which is a graph of a
function. [6]

1.3 Determine the largest possible domains of the following functions.

r
x
(a) f (x) = [8]
x2 − 8x + 15

1.4 Determine the range of f (x) = . [6]
1 + x2

1.5 Let f : X → Y and g : Y → Z be functions. Prove that if f and g are both one-to-one
functions, then g ◦ f is one-to-one. [6].

1.6 Determine algebraically whether the following functions are injective (one-to-one).

(a) f (x) = x2 + 3 [4]

2x
(b) g(x) = [4]
x+1

1.7 Given that f (x) = x + 2 and g(x) = |x| + 5. Evaluate

(i) f (−1) [2]

(ii) (f ◦ g)(a + h). [4]

1.8 Sketch the graph of [5]

 −9 if x ≤ 0,

h(x) = x2 − 9 if 0 < x ≤ 2,

−x if x > 2

Question 2.

2.1 State whether H(x) = 4x2 + 3x + x is a polynomial or not; if not, give reasons why. [3]

2.2 Consider h(x) = −3x2 − 8x + 3. Find (i) intercepts (ii) end behaviors, and (iii) sketch the
graph of h. [3,2,3]

x2 − 4
2.3 Consider a rational function r(x) = . Find
x3 − 2x2 − 3x

(i) Asymptotes , (ii) Intercepts, (iii) Sign changes and hence (iv) sketch the
graph of r(x). [4,2,4,5]

2.4 (a) Evaluate 16log4 8 [4]

(b) Write 3 log3 (x − 1) + log3 (2x) − 6 log3 (x + 8) as a single logarithm. [3]

4
(c) Solve (i) 2 · 5x−1 = 125 2x+1 . [6]

(ii) 32x+1 = 2x−2 . [4]
