questions based on it.

The Tragedy of Arrogance

It was 82 years ago and she was just seven years old, but Eva Hart remembers
the sinking of the Titanic as if it were yesterday. She is the only survivor, who clearly
remembers the tragedy that claimed more than 1,500 lives when the liner struck an
iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York in April, 1912.

Sitting comfortably in her London home, the old lady slowly recounted the
tragedy. “I saw the ship going down …. I shall never forget the screams of people
jumping into the water,” she said, “then the dead silence afterwards.” She and her
mother, safe in a lifeboat, watched in horror as the supposedly unsinkable ship, with
her father still on board, slipped beneath the water.

The last memory she has of her father is when he lifted her into the lifeboat. “He
made no attempt to get into it with us. He just helped the women and children and
then he stood back and that was the last I ever saw of him.”

Miss Hart is not the only living survivor, but the others are extremely old or
were under the age of three at the time and do not remember it. Hart remembers her
mother’s deep feeling before they sailed. When her father said they would be going on
the Titanic instead of the Philadelphia, cancelled because of a coal strike, she asked if
it was the ship that was said to be unsinkable.

“My father put his arms around my mother’s shoulders and said, “They say it
because the ship IS unsinkable.” She looked at him and said, “You mustn’t say that. It
is so arrogant.”

“The fact that we were allowed to go to sea with 2,200 people on board and with
lifeboats for only 800 was a great mistake which made the terrible loss of life
inevitable,” Hart said.
