Assignment
Write on the working principle of the Lathe, Drilling and Milling Machines.
These days lathe machine is the most popular and essential machinery in metalworking. LATHE is an
abbreviation of “Longitudinal Access Turning Horizontal Equipment”. Lathe are intended to spin a
workpiece against a tool bit, unlike milling machines. It is known as the “mother of machine tools”.
Working principle
It works on the principle of the rotating workpiece and fixed cutting tool. The workpiece is held between
two strong supports known as centers.
Usually, lathes have two types of centers, A live center and another one is dead center. The Center, at
the headstock, is called a live center. That rotates the workpiece. And dead center at the tailstock holds
the workpiece aligned with the live center.
Lathe removes the undesired material from a rotating workpiece in the form of chips with the help of a
tool that is transverse across the work and can be fed deep in the work.
The cutting tool is moved towards the rotating workpiece, to cut it into the desired shape. For normal
operations, the cutting tool is fed either parallel or perpendicular to the working axis.
The main function of the lathe is to remove the metal from a job to give it the required shape and size.
A drilling machine is a type of machine in which the holes are being made on the workpiece by making
use of a rotating tool called drill bit or the twist drill.
Drilling is basically a technology of creating holes. Drilling operations can also be performed on Lathe
machines. In the lathe machine, the workpiece rotates and the drilling tool is held stationary in the
tailstock.
Boring: When we talk about drilling, boring is mostly discussed. Basically, Boring is a process in which
the holes are enlarged that are already being drilled or cored. To perform boring action by a machine a
special holder for the boring tool is required.
Working principle
When the power is given to the motor, the spindle rotates, and thereby the stepped pulley attached to it
also rotates. On the other end, one more stepped pulley is attached and that is inverted to increase or
decrease the speed of the rotational motion.
Now, a V-belt is placed in between the stepped pulleys so as to drive the power transmission. Here a V-
belt is used instead of a flat belt, in order to increase the power efficiency.
Now the drill bit also rotates which was placed in the chuck and which was in connection with the
spindle. As the Pulleys rotates, the spindle also rotates which can rotate the drill bit.
Now, by the rotation of hand-wheel, the spindle moves up and down in the vertical direction in order to
give the necessary amount of feed to the work and this drill bit is used to make the holes on the
component placed in the machine vice.
Drilling Machine has based upon the principle that the rotating edge of the tool exerts a large force on
the workpiece and holes are being created in the workpiece. The material is removed from the
workpiece by the shearing and extrusion process.
Milling is a machining process of metal removal due to cutting action of a revolving cutter, when the
work is fed past it.
Working principle
Milling machine employed in the metal removing operation in which the work is rigidly clamped on the
table of the machine and the revolving cutter which has multiple teeth is mounted on the arbor.
The cutter revolves at high speed and the work is fed slowly past the cutter.
The work can be fed in a vertical, longitudinal, or cross direction depending upon the type of milling
machine being used.
As the work proceeds, the cutter-teeth removes the metal from the surface of the job(workpiece) to
produce the desired shape.
In a nutshell, the revolving cutter is held on a spindle or arbor and the work clamped on the machine
table, fed past the revolving cutter. In doing so, the teeth of the cutter remove the metal, in the form of
chips, from the surface of the work to produce the desired shape
