Spirit The Wolf
Spirit The Wolf
com /spirit-the-wolf/
The newest amigurumi pattern from Hooked by Kati is Spirit the Wolf. Howling with his head
held high, this softie is full of attitude and ready to snuggle. He would make a great addition
to a forest themed nursery or would be a lovely item for a wolf sanctuary fundraiser.
I’ve been asked on several occasions to design a wolf, and I was very happy to finally find a
gap in the design schedule to fit it in. I remembered a T-shirt a friend of mine had back when
we were kids. It depicted a howling wolf on a cliffside with a big moon behind him. With that
image in my mind, I started on Spirit.
Construction
Spirit is constructed from the nose down. The chin is worked in without sewing and his legs
and body are formed by branching into a tripod, similar to Babineaux and Anduin.
1/19
This wolf has some of my FAVORITE feet I’ve done, and the testing group agrees! They are
clunky, with big toes and they are worked directly onto the front feet. The back feet has
separate, equally clunk-tastic toes that are sewn on to the end of the hind legs.
This pattern doesn’t use any safety eyes — since Spirit is howling at the moon, his eyes are
shut. However, if you wanted to add them, you could do so before the branching section. But
he’ll need eyebrows…like, he’ll really need eyebrows.

Pattern Notes
Work in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch unless otherwise specified by the pattern.
For best results, assemble parts in order as directed.
Weave in attachment ends at very end of project in case pieces require repositioning.
Rounds labeled “Short round” are worked back and forth and will end before the round
is complete, leaving stitches deliberately unworked to be worked in later rounds as
3/19
instructed.
When instructed, an additional sc(s) will be added at the end of a round to move the
starting stitch of the next round to the left (clockwise). This does not change the stitch
count of the round. It only moves the starting point. At branching point of torso,
instructions are written assuming the artist left the carried working MED yarn attached.
Artist has the option to cut MED yarn before working legs and using sc join to begin
torso if they did not carry the yarn through the neck.
When curving torso, 15 unworked sts from Rnd 64 should be centered behind legs. If
necessary, move starting st of Rnd 64 to make sure unworked sts are even behind the
legs.
Special Stitches
Sc3tog – Single crochet 3 together – [Insert hook through next st, yo, pull up a loop]
3 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

Sc join – Single crochet join: With long starting tail, make slip knot in yarn, loop slip
knot over hook, insert hook through stitch, yo, pull through, yarn over, pull through both
loops on hook. Leave starting tail on outside of work.
Dc5tog – Double crochet 5 together – [Yo, insert hook through next st, yo, pull up a
loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 5 times, yo, pull through all 6 loops on the hook.

Rnd 70: (RS) Work around including unworked sts from previous rnds, 48 sc. (48)
Stuff torso.
Finish stuffing.
Cut yarn. Thread needle through front loops of remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight to close.
Using starting tail from sc join attachment on body or Right Leg, close gap between legs.
Weave in ends.
Hind Legs
(Make 2)
With MED, ch 2.
11/19
Rnd 3: [Sc, inc] 6 times. (18)
Stuff very lightly. Add only enough stuffing to smooth wrinkles and press flat to 1” thick.
Lower Leg
(Make 2)
With SOFT, ch 2.
12/19
Rnds 7-14: Sc evenly around.
Press thigh flat parallel to lower leg and add or remove stuffing so the thigh can be easily
pressed to 1” thick.
Finish stuffing.
Use SOFT tail to close gap between Thigh and Lower Leg.
Sit body on a flat surface like a tripod. Hold hind legs to body so that the starting rnd of the
Thigh touches the last st of Rnd 65 (the longest short round). The point of the back leg
should stick out behind the body and the Lower Leg should be flat along the ground. Using
pins, mark where the Thigh touches the body around the Thigh, making sure to pin around
the very edge of the Thigh when flattened against the body. This will help stretch the leg so
the attachment is more smooth.
Mark both leg attachments with pins before sewing to ensure the legs are symmetrical on
either side of the body.
Using the pins as a guide, sew the Thighs to the body, leaving the Lower Leg loose.
13/19
Hind Toes
(Make 2)
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, [5 dc in next st, sl st] 3 times, 5 dc in next st, sc, turn.
(25)
Row 2: Ch 1, 6 sc, [sl st, 5 sc] twice, sl st, 6 sc, turn. (25)
Wrap toes around the end of Hind Foot, being careful not to stretch out the toes too much.
They should match the front toes as much as possible. Using the finishing tail, sew the Hind
Toes to the Hind Feet. Optional: Stuff toes very lightly before finishing attachment.
Ears
(Make 2)
With MED, ch 2.
14/19
Rnd 12: Sc evenly around.
Press flat.
Row 14: Ch 1, working through both layers of last round, 9 sc, turn.
Where ear folds, fold left ear toward you (to the left). Fold right ear away from you (to the
right).
With pins, mark two sets of 6 sts at Rnd 24 (the first Short Rnd in MED on head), 6 sts apart,
centered on either side of the nose.
Using pins as a guide, sew through last rnd of ears, with folded side up. Sew along bottom
edge of ear, 5 sts straight down neck to attach ear in place.
Face Blaze
With MED, ch 8.
15/19
Row 18: Ch 1, inc, 7 sc, inc, turn. (11)
Pin Blaze to top of wolf face. Pin with RS of 1st row facing up, 7 sts across the top of the
nose at the color change, centered on the nose. Pin the Blaze in place where it touches the
face. Pin last rnd of Blaze to the color change of MED, centered evenly in front of the ears.
Using sewing tail from Blaze, sew Blaze to face, making sure to pull tight so the Blaze
doesn’t bulge.
Eyes
With pins, mark on left side of face at Rnd 16 of body (even with Chin attachment), 2 sts
away from edge of blaze. Count down 1 st, right 1 st and place pin 2. Count down 2 sts, right
2 sts and place pin 3. This pin should be 2 sts from blaze as well. Count down 1 st, left 1 st
and place pin 4. This curve should follow the curve of the blaze.
Mark the opposite side of the face with pins that mirror the first, also curving 2 sts away from
the blaze, in an arch.
With strand of NAVY, sew line 1 strand thick from pin 1 to 2, sew a line 3 strands thick from
pins 2 to 3, and sew a line 3 strands thick from pins 3 to 4.
Tail
With NAVY, ch 2.
16/19
Rnd 9: Change to MED, [sc, spike-st (see Special Stitches)] 12 times. (24)
Stuff.
Finish stuffing.
With pins, mark the center st on the back, at Rnd 91 (last rnd before decreases) of Torso,
between the hind legs.
Count up 4 rnds and mark 2 sts, one st apart. Count up 4 rnds and mark 2 sts, three sts
apart.
On the tail, mark the closing st. Count up 4 rnds and mark 2 sts, one st apart. Count up 4
rnds and mark 2 sts, three sts apart.
17/19
Weave in all attachment ends when parts are positioned as desired.
