This the frst of atwo part article Objective The defending numbered team has to defend, regan possession then break quickly onthe counterattack to score in one of their opponents goals They must shoot within six second of winning the ball In this exercise we are focusing on counter attacking quichly through free ‘wide spaces. You can introduce and practice the other methods. Which ‘one is most successful may depend on the makeup of your teams players. Try them all and see, AFunctional Exercise Thisisa5 v6 game in favor ofthe attacking team. We are working witha back three and one defending midfielder to gain possession and counter attack quickly to score into the small goals. The neutral players (A) and () play for both teams and so when the defending team gains possession they become wingers who break wide into the fee zones forthe counter attacking team. Now the game has a 7 v4 overload in favor of the countering team, The defending tam cannot enter the wide free zones andthe atacking team now tas seconds to score a goal Alternatively, when the defending team wins the bal, they have to run it to the end line instead of coring in the goal. Use the penalty boxas the ofside line In this example, a bad pass by (0) has been intercepted by a defender (4). This could be a a result of winning tackle by a defending player to start the attack; ora shot saved by the keeper to start the counter play Player 4can play it rectly toa wide player (11) or ashe does here through another teammate (3) We must break through the wide areas though as that is where the most space fs quaranteed because the wide zones are free, Initially we want success with the counterattack so we make it easy toachieve. Then increase the difficulty and insist that the wide player Cannot score directly but the goal must be scored by an inside player (or the wide player cn bring the ball inside to score but then the defender can confront and tackle him). gL, WORLD CLASS COACHING - Thousands of Training Sessions available at www.worldclasscoaching.com SORES Phase of Play Thisisa7 v8 in the attacking teams favor to challenge te defending ‘team. He immediately begins the counter attack. The initial atackis through the lank positions. Thered players (once (6) and(H) and now (7) and (11) attacking the other way), must get touch ine wide and into the outside free zones where they cannot be tacked (thisis to aid the speed ofthe counterattack). The keeper throws ‘the ball wide to (7) here andthe counterattack begins. An altemate counter attack can be through the middle straight into the striker (9). buildup is through te back four then it wl ikely take longer, and the essence of tis beaks speed, so look to attack from fee lank postion or directly tothe strike. The stritr must beable tobe stongand hold the ball up well and support players have to get there as quicly as possible. More and more profesional tams are paying this way; defending patently then attacking with pace on gaining possession. Thisis also ageat mental psychological workout forthe players because their thinking hast IMMEDIATELY switch fom a defending mentality toan attacking mentality and their bodies have to react accordingly to this with quick actions. Ifthe mave breaks down, again; sucessful MIND AND BODY TRANSITION fas to occur but this time going from an attacking mentality toa defensive ‘ne; and thsis an area coaches need to constantly work on wit their players. Ifthe keeper comes out to win the ball thee isthe risk of geting beat to the ball by the opponent. Or, theres the possibilty ofa collision and the ball going fee. The thing that makes this uch a dfficult situation fora keeper to deal with sits so easy to not practice this situation because many coaches, find it dificult to recreate the situation. This artide discusses a progression of warm-ups that will iacreae the players abit tobe fast in ever changing game situations. Session Topi Over the last 10 years we have developed many different styes of agility programming, We have standard quick feet or cone agility programs, we have reactive agility programs, dribbling and moves based aility programs and we have passing and receiving agility programs. But many ofthese {ills are player focused and not team focused. They were great at developing an individual but lacked team oriented approach ince we are allabout bridging the gap between training andon-feld application we thought twas time to try something new. What we wanted todo this falls take the next step n our FLT. (Functionally Integrated Training) Program and begin to combine as many aspect of game speed as we could into two ar three Key warm-up drilsthat players could do before a session orbeforea game. Here is what we came up with. First, we needed to deter what physical, mental and technical factors make up “GAME SPEED.” We came up with the following 10: 1. Anticipation 6.Deceleraton 2, Recognition/Preparation 7.Change ofPace 3. Reaction 8. Speed withthe Bal 4, Separation 9. Speed Against Another Player 5. Acceleration 10. Communication/Decsion Making Speed ‘We were abe to get nine of the 10 factors ito one drill which turned out to be an incredible warm-up fr us. We then came up with 10 different speed dri off ofthis warm-up that ceated a great speed/agiity, possession based fitness session, We started with Diamond Movement Patterns where four players on four corners of a ciamond pattem had to coordinate simple movement of shufing, jockeying, sprinting, backpedaling and transitioning (or changing directions) at diferent angles. The key was to get them aut ofthe mindset of unig to cone and begin to focus on the ‘movement of those playes around them, reacting accordingly tothe runs made by the leader in the group. Next we integrated the ballin quick dribbling or moves of ofthese pattems. Tis progressed to quick movements off the ball to ceate space and receive a pass Now that we had them moringin set coordinated pattems, we integrated some decision making skill where the runs were not scripted cut, but instead became more instinctive. This led us up to this week, where we putin our Diamond Passing Player Choice Warm-Up. We put together some highlights ofhisin the video below. You cn view ths video by viewing this magazine in the Member Drils Database on our web site. Sem Arcane) Game Speed S00 . oc In this dil (last half of the video) we have one player running (run to the middle, shufle or run tothe right o left) and receiving a pass ftom the player opposite them. The runner wll pass back tothe passing player with one touch, and then perform the shuffle or run tothe right or left. The ‘receiving player will pass away fom the direction the runner decdes to go, andthe player thatthe runner shufles towards will have to fill the empty spot so we always have the four corner af the diamond covered. All passes are performed with one touch to emphasize quick passing and decision making (communication with thei teammates). ‘When we put ths in last week, many ofthe coaches were concerned that their players would have trouble picking up the pattem, but within a few minutes the drill was moving with some aspect of uidity and players were making quicker decisions. The last drilln the video youssee above ‘is what we now are using as a warm-up to get the players focused and warm-up their passing, movement and communication. The key isin the progression... Start off with one set patter, then get players tostart to focus on moving asa unit. Next, incorporate one new reaction item per ‘week unt you have progressed to something that almost looks ike controlled chaos! in this dill, an observer might be wondering what the heck {s going on, but the players seem to know where to go and how to keep the ball moving quickly. Thsisthe ist time that we have run this progression and we arestilin the process of building into our system, but week by week the players ate beginning to add more speed tothe cil and we are stating to see more confident decsion making ability, even asthe complexity increases. {Risone ting to get your players tobe able torun a fast ladder dil or a5-10-5 shuttle (where the pattems set, ts completely diferent tohave the players run fast ina pattern that sever changing, with pasing and receiving, while communicating with their teammates This is how we begin to train soccer speciicspeed. Session Topics - Systems of Play Thisartide discusses the possible formations that you can use with ateam playing 8 v8. The formations are dscused in trms of trengths, weaknesses and ‘how they improveor inhibit development. The article has been written and submitted by Steve Crane of Striker Soccer Acadeny. Crane holds a USSF National ‘and WSCAA Premier Diploma, Youcan click hero see a mumber of 0s or DVDs tha sass various systems of play. There are various systems of play that are generally associated with youth soccer at the 8 v8 level. Ths is upto and including Under 128 so the players shouldbe familiar with the game of soccer and understand their roles on their team. We should be encouraging our players at this ‘age to be experimental, to play positively and without fear of making mistakes, Payers willbe naturally competitive and will want to win at all cots butts important to focus them on the importance of thelr own progression within the game. As coaches we to have an overwhelming desire to havea winning team but ther sa bigger picture that should be taken into consideration, For example, onan under 12 gits team I coached there was one player ‘who was excellent going forvard as an attacking midfielder. She could score goals, worked very hard on offense and was to put it bluntly, greedy, a ball hog. Now, she loved to play this way, she was effective for the team and was constantly agame wine However, defensively she gave us nothing, zero. As far as team morale ‘was concerned she was a hindrance. The other players complained that ‘she would not or did not pass the ball, and this in turn led to resentment among the gil, So,asa coach, what could | do? If want to keep winning games and win ‘trophies | should donothing, but was that benefiting A) My tam, B) My players and C) The individual concerned. The answer is categoricaly no. | tried speaking with the player in private but this had little to no effect. ‘So what did I do. | chose to play her asa defensive screen, playing 10 yar infront of the defensive line, Her responsibilities were to intercept balls played towards the opposition forwards and pas it quickly to her teammate. Also to receive te ball fom the defense and pass the ball quickly to out wide players if posible, to progress our attack. Did she enjay my decision, ‘the answer wasno, not at first. But, sl explained to her and her parents, this was a way where she could develop herself into a better player. By forcing her to do things she did not want to da, but was more than Capable of we drastically improved her sls and al round ably within the space of hala season, I believe as coaches we are stl very rigid with the system | wil outine below, the sooner we get overit and let our players practice moving into cifferent areas, communicating to others that they need to be covered, ‘ater players recognizing when caver needs tobe applied, then will our players be free. At the upper echelons ofthe game there isa fuiity that is beautiful to watch, almost telepathic synchronization between the players that allows fantastic socer to be created, | use Chelsea and Ashley Cole as an example. As a left back his main responsiblity is defending but he spends 80% of his time attacking. What happens ifthe move breaks down and the opposition counter attack? Someone fom the Chelsea midfield has alteady recognized the danger and sloted in to cover the dangerous space where Cole has lft That i id and we should be encouraging this at an ealy age As coaches with teams of this age, playing 8 v 8 soccer, we must «concentrate on systems of play that will improve players as individual, not teams. We have a responsibilty to the players and to parents to improve them to their maximum potential. Encouraging things that ate a little outside ofthe box’ and innovative are things that players, get excited by. iFit makes sense and explained property the players and parents will support you. It matters what system of play you choose, You can be limited by the players that you have at your disposal but if you asa coach play safe nothing is going to improve. As the saying goes, Things don't change, they stay as they are’ Unless you make the change. 8 Bis achallenging game to coach, Ifind 1111 easier, however we can doo much positive development with players with this system . More than we can inthe full sided game. Thee is just so much more we can coach. Choose your system, adapt your system, stick with your system, just remember that developing and empowering your players i ultimately more important than a winning team. Seeing the rewards of a player fulfiling thelr potentials far greater than wining any trophy.
