INTRODUCTION:

Site investigation is conducted by geotechnical engineers to obtain information on the

physical properties of soil and rock around a site to design earthworks and foundations for
proposed structures and for repair of distress to earthworks and structures caused by
subsurface conditions. It is used to obtain information on the physical properties of soil and
rock around a site to design earthworks and foundations for proposed structures and for repair
of distress to earthworks and structures caused by subsurface conditions. Soil samples are
often categorised as being either "disturbed" or "undisturbed." However, "undisturbed"
samples are not truly undisturbed. A disturbed sample is one in which the structure of the soil
has been changed sufficiently that tests of structural properties of the soil will not be
representative of in-situ conditions and only properties of the soil grains (e.g., grain size
distribution, Atterberg limits, and possibly the water content) can be accurately determined.
An undisturbed sample is one where the condition of the soil in the sample is close enough to
the conditions of the soil in-situ to allow tests of structural properties of the soil to be used to
approximate the properties of the soil in-situ.

Soil investigation may be thought of as consisting of three steps it is boring, sampling and
testing. Boring refers to drilling a hole in the ground, sampling refers to removing soil from
hole and testing refers to determining characteristics of the soil. Some of the more common
types of borings are auger boring, test pits and core boring. An auger is a screw like tool used
to bore a hole. Some augers are operated by hand and others are power operated. As the hole
is bored a short distance, the auger may be lifted to remove soil. This remove soil, as known
as disturb sample can be used for field classification and laboratory testing. It is difficult to
use augers in either very soft clay or coarse sand because the hole tends to refill when the
auger is removed. Hand auger may be used for boring to a depth of about 6 m.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To introduce a technique to take soil samples disturbed and undisturbed.

2. Determine the physical characteristics of soil using the phase relation.
3. Interpret visually the type of soil obtained.

PROCEDURE:

POLITEKNIK KOTA BHARU

1. Before starting the experiment, gather all the necessary equipment and materials and
listen to the instructions from the laboratory lecturer.
2. The test location was selected in the field near the wood workshop building where an
auger could be used to expose a soil profile.
3. Remove the surface vegetation using the hoe.
4. Use an auger to dig the soil to a depth of 1 m.
5. Next, connect the sampling tube to the equipment manufacturer's
6. Place the auger at the top of the soil and turn the auger one complete revolution
(360°) to dig into the ground. Do not turn the auger more than one complete circle
(360°) to prevent the soil from being compacted.
7. Dig a 1 metre hole in the ground with an auger.
8. Come down into the hole sample tube tool until you reach the bottom and then press
into the soil to get two undisturbed soil samples.
9. Next, keep the sample in the bag or tray, then bring it back to the lab.
10. Also, get well over 10 kg of disturbed samples from the dig hole.
11. Next, in the laboratory:
a. Greased the split mould and placed the mould in conceivable.
b. Remove the soil sample undisturbed from the sampling tube and both ends of the
soil with the wire saws.
c. Measure the diameter and the length of the soil sample to be equal to 0.5mm weight
the soil sample to find the bulk density (Mb).
12. work procedure to find the moisture content:
a. Put the disturbed soil into three moisture content cans.
b. Next, put the undisturbed soil into two moisture content cans.
c. To obtain accurate readings, weigh an empty moisture content can (clean and dry).
d. Take some of the soil samples, 30 grams, and put them in the can. Weigh the can
with wet soil.
e. Put them into the oven within 24 hours. After 24 hours, weigh the can once more.
f. Please take three samples for this moisture content test.
13. Record all data has been taken.
14. The equipment is disassembled and cleaned before being stored.
