“BRIGADA PAGBASA” (as a form of Brigada Eskwela

Initiative ) a mass movement for reading that envisions to bring
together experts, change makers, policymakers, and other stakeholders
across all sectors from international and local agencies and organizations
in the public and private sectors to form collaborations among agencies
to synergize efforts and resources towards addressing education
challenges and opportunities to contribute in addressing current
challenges and gaps in the education in the country by equipping our
learners with 21st century skill.

With the theme “Bayanihan sa Paaralan”, the Brigada Eskwela

emphasizes the country’s collective efforts in promoting collaboration for
safe living and addressing social issues and concerns in schools, at
homes, and in the community. Brigada Pagbasa, as a form of Brigada
Eskwela (through its volunteerism spirit), is an after-school reading
program that aims to cultivate a culture of reading among learners and
help those who need further assistance in developing their literacy skills.

Brigada Pagbasa as part of the Brigada Eskwela is intended to

improve the learners’ literacy skills or help learners enjoy the beauty of
reading. Tambo Elementary School Unit 1’ Brigada Pagbasa will utilize
teaching individually or in groups and targets academic difficulties that
potentially hinder learning. It will also help create opportunities to invite
stakeholders to take part of this year’s Brigada Eskwela by being part of
the school level reading program.

IMPACT OF BRIGADA PAGBASA IN DEVELOPING LEARNERS

READING ABILITIES

In the year 2019 is the year in which COVID-19 attacked our country
and many have been affected and the education system is one of them.
Many changes have been made, but we continued the fight. This was not
the obstacle to stop providing services to the children so that we could
provide them the best education they deserve and for them to have a
good future, and to continue their dreams in life with full of determination
and hope. Continuing education in the midst of a pandemic is a difficult
task. Many have sacrificed to deliver good quality education. As the years
passed by and we are gradually returning to face to face, many children
are struggling in reading. They observed the massive impact of COVID-19
on the children’s education that is why DepEd came up with a program
that became an innovation of each school the Brigada Pagbasa.

This Brigada Pagbasa was implemented by STA.CRUZ

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL that aims to help learners develop their reading
abilities and at the same time gained general knowledge to apply in all
subject areas. Having this activity, we hope to help our learners reduce
the feeling of hopelessness that can lead to behaviour motivation issues.
This Brigada Pagbasa will seek to strengthen the reading ability of every
pupil-recipient and to help in fostering the culture of reading.

Sangguniang Kabataan and knowledgeable others showed

willingness to take part in teaching struggling readers and be assigned in
their respective purok as reading teacher without expecting
compensation. The nursery of the purok serves as the learning shed or
learning centre where these learners and reading teachers meet each
other following the IATF health protocols. The project of ma’am Jovelyn C.
Sajor the “PROJECT YOUTH LEADERS IN ACTION FOR READING
ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITIES.” to be included in the School Improvement
Plan. This project was also conceptualized as an alternate solution to
continue reading program of the school to address the alarming result of
diagnostic test conducted during the 3 rd week of first quarter S.Y 2022-
2023 wherein 62.96% or 17 out of 27 grade3 pupils were identified under
frustration level. Reading resources/materials will be provided by the
school and the implementation will be face-to-face engagement. Reading
materials to be used are packed and to be given to assigned Sangguniang
Kabataan to be under her/his care for safety purposes. Reading Tracker
are attached to every reading material to immediately monitor the
progress of the learners every session. Reading sessions will be done
every Saturday at 2:00- 4:00 in the afternoon within ten weeks or one
quarter. Monitoring and evaluation of the reading progress of pupils will
be done onsite by the proponent with strict compliance to the safety and
health protocols.

As an initiative of SCES teachers, all grade levels launched their own

reading intervention strategies. The school-based one-on-one reading
remediation run. This important piece of learning for the schools that took
part has been the need to remediate learners with difficulty in reading and
poor comprehension. A pre and post-test were conducted to measure the
improvement of learners’ reading levels after the intervention program.

SCES also received donations cash and in materials coming from

different organizations to be used in Brigada Eskwela.

The initiative promoted “Bayanihan Spirit” among teachers, parents,

and stakeholders to address the reading problems of the learners. Truly,
learning must continue despite the pandemic. The resiliency among
Filipinos was prevalent even in the most trying times at present. So let us
dedicate and actively involve ourselves in all projects of the school. Let us
join our hands as Henry Ford stated “Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is a progress. Working together is a success”
