Past Participle

What is a Past Participle?

The past participle is a form of a verb that is typically used

in perfect tenses, passive voice, and as adjectives. For
regular verbs, it is usually formed by adding "-ed" to the
base form (e.g., "walk" becomes "walked"). For irregular
verbs, the past participle can take various forms (e.g., "go"
becomes "gone", "see" becomes "seen").

Uses of Past Participle

1. Perfect Tenses:
Present Perfect: "I have eaten."
Past Perfect: "I had eaten."
Future Perfect: "I will have eaten."
2. Passive Voice:
Present Passive: "The book is written by him."
Past Passive: "The book was written by him."
Future Passive: "The book will be written by him."
3. As Adjectives:
"The broken window needs to be fixed."
"We enjoyed the baked cookies."
Active Voice vs
Passive Voice

Active Voice
In active voice, the subject does the action.
It's like saying who does what.

Example:
"John (subject) bought (action) a car (object)."
"Mary (subject) is painting (action) a picture
(object)."

Passive Voice
In passive voice, the action happens to the
subject.
It's like saying what happens to something or
someone.
Structure:
Formed with "to be" + past participle of the
main verb.

Example:
"The car (object) was bought (action) by John
(who did it)."
"The picture (object) is being painted (action)
by Mary (who is doing it)."
